Chapter Ten

By the time the family elders followed up the issue and discovered Preye already had three wives, they resolved to keep the baby—a carbon copy of his father, and they named him Kalio after his maternal ancestral home. He was handed over to his grandmother for proper attention as Boma was clearly inexperienced. Kalio started school but did not complete the primary stage. He was incessantly being sent home for fees and when his grandmother could no longer cope, she decided to leave him at home. Boma simply dumped him in her care and moved over to Port-Harcourt, discontinuing school totally. She started by continuing to live with her elder sister who sold roasted yam, fish and plantain popularly called 'boli' and helping her occasionally but most of the money for her upkeep came from Preye with little or no mention made of Kalio. The moment Preye became tired of her, she moved to some other men.
