"Do you want to show him around outside?" Penelope asked.
Roman looked up and smiled at her. "Sure."
They opened the sliding glass door to the backyard and Arlo cautiously headed out in front of them. He showed more excitement than he had up to this point by running around and rolling in the grass. It had probably been a while since he had seen any.
Penelope ended up tossing him one of the tennis balls they bought and his ears visibly perked up. He dashed toward it and picked it up in his mouth, bringing it back. The now slimy ball fell out of his mouth and Arlo looked up at her expectantly.
She rubbed the top of his head before throwing it again but this time he didn't go after it. He whined sadly and flopped onto the ground in defeat.
"…did I do something wrong?"
Roman frowned. "You might have reminded him of his old owner. Maybe he used to get head scratches in between rounds of fetch in his first home too."
