For the first time since being here, Sawyer weakly and slowly walked up the stairs, paying no attention to Travis behind him, he went to Peggy’s room door. Travis stopped in shock at the sight of Sawyer looking like he was in a trance as he walked into the room and shut the door behind him. His car key clanked as he stuffed it into his pocket and gripped it tightly while the other hand covered his face and he let out a shaky breath that did nothing to help him.
Sawyer looked at the bare mattress, drew close to it and let his fingers trace over the bed frame. He lifted his head to look around the dark room. He’d been in so many times that he did not need much light to know what drawings hung on the wall and where things were. But besides the drawings, the room was empty. If there was anything in it, it was in the closed closet never to be opened by her or anyone again.
