chapter 67 Chameleon

After his scheme had failed previously, where he had sent the demons under the command of World-serpent to attack the hut on Mount Dabie, Ge Kai had decided to change his approach for getting things done.

Ge Kai had decided upon a more cunning scheme which was the very reason that Ge Kai had chosen the most cunning and pretentious of his subordinates to do the job, Chameleon.

Chameleon had been tasked with impersonating an Immortal Messenger to approach Long Yi. It had to be said that the Immortal Messengers were emissaries from the Immortal World who were responsible for delivering the commands of the Immortal World for the cultivators living on Earth.

Nobody had the guts to disobey orders from the higher ups of the Immortal World, therefore these messengers enjoyed unrestricted access to whatever they wanted and were always given the highest treatment by everyone. Long Yi would never have tried to avoid a messenger even in the worst of circumstances because of the upheaval it might have caused. Therefore, Ge Kai was sure that his scheme was bound to succeed.

Chameleon was not only a good fraud and a good actor; it was also a natural master of disguise. Even nature helped it maintain its guise, that's how profound its skills were.

Chameleon had been planning on luring Long Yi away from the busy places in the hopes of killing him in order to take the Dragon Sword away from him.

Yet, it knew that the job couldn't have been that easy otherwise Ge Kai would never have sent for it personally.

It took on the disguise of an Immortal Messenger that it had seen before and approached Long Yi who had been training in his yard, sword in hand working on his footwork.

"Young one, I am a messenger sent by the Immortal World to convey their commands to you. Kneel and listen to the Immortal decree."

Long Yi who had been working on his cultivation had recently made a major breakthrough. He had rushed past several stages with the help of a timely qi infusion from his master, Xiao Luo. This had not only helped him cross some minor stages but had also pushed him past the major blockade that had been keeping him from the Immortalization stage.

The increase in the cultivation stages had come with a lot of strength that he had not been used to; which eventually forced him to train harder in order to use all his potential.

Long Yi was about to kneel in order to receive the orders conveyed by the higher ups but stopped when he felt the situation to be very odd.

The messengers were supposed to be very powerful and yet the messenger in front of him neither had an unstoppable aura nor the convincing air of the powerful masters.

Long Yi immediately raised his guard to the extreme and followed the Chameleon to the place where it was luring him to. Long Yi wanted to figure out the true intentions behind the person he had been following.

They soon turned a corner towards the most secluded part of the area after which the Chameleon finally showed its true nature and turned on him.

"You really are a fool. It hasn't been that long that you were almost assassinated and yet here you are, completely putting your trust in a total stranger and even following him towards your death. Could you make it any easier for me?"

Chameleon mocked him openly. It could not believe how easy it had been for it to lure Long Yi away.

If they had done the same previously, they could have avoided wasting their time with the Eastern Clan and could have instead focused on the goal and that was the Dragon Sword.

"Who is to say that the only fool over here is you? If I wouldn't have followed you, you would never have shown your true colors. I want you to stay behind and tell me stories about your master since you clearly don't have what it takes to be at the top of the food chain."

Long Yi retorted in an attempt to both relieve his anger and to buy some time before the reinforcements arrived. After the last attack on his life, his bodyguards had always followed in the shadows and at this moment they had been ordered to reveal themselves only if Long Yi were to fall in mortal danger.

Chameleon was also one of the most cunning individuals in the world and could clearly feel what the naive Long Yi was trying to pull off.

It was in no mood to play games; therefore it didn't wait at all before making its move. If it had been any other person but Long Yi, the Chameleon would have liked nothing more than to torture that individual who had yet to come to terms with his predicament. There was nothing more satisfying to it than the despair and hopelessness on the faces of its victims.

But right now, it had decided to prioritize survival over the fun of the hunt. Long Yi was the sect leader of the Purple sect and was bound to be accompanied especially after the previous fiasco where the World-serpent had failed in killing Long Yi. Therefore it had to complete its job as soon as possible.

Its tongue shot out of its mouth at a speed that was impossible to determine with the naked eye. At such a high velocity, the tongue had become more like a sword and a very sharp one at that.

The tongue had shot towards his neck horizontally. Long Yi felt an immense sense of danger that was followed by a hint of pain along his neck.

Long Yi didn't bother paying attention to the pain or the wound. Fortunately he had been able to move his body slightly towards the end following the warning that his perception had given him beforehand. This instinct had saved his life otherwise the tongue would have definitely pierced his head or neck which would have resulted in a bloody death if not a painful one.

Although he had survived, he still suffered an injury while the enemy had been completely unharmed.

Even though he had been on guard he couldn't avoid the attack of Chameleon that came too fast for him to react.

"Well, who's the fool now…huh? Idiotic human, you should have known your place earlier before you opened your mouth."

Long Yi groaned in pain but got himself up and drew out his sword, the Dragon Sword.

Chameleon tried to stop it by lashing out its tongue with an agility that was similar to that of a swashbuckler but someone else leapt from the shadows and stood in front of Long Yi and shielded him from the attack.

Chameleon was shocked to see the person in front of it. There was visible shock in its eyes which caused it to retreat slightly. Someone observant would have noticed recognition in its eyes other than shock. It meant that the Chameleon knew who the newcomer had been but didn't open his mouth and chose to portray otherwise.

Long Yi saw that someone had come to save him and was about to help him defeat the Chameleon when the savior raised his hand to tell him to leave it be.

Long Yi was a little unwilling to let it go after all it had injured him but he knew he had to rely on the newcomer; hence he had to listen to him and gave in reluctantly.

Chameleon saw that it was a fight against two and retreated swiftly. At least that was how it looked to Long Yi. He was grateful for the timely help given to him by the Immortal Cultivator in front of him.

This newcomer cultivator not only had a cultivation level that was higher than himself but he also had the holy aura associated with the Immortal cultivation techniques. That was the reason Long Yi knew that it was an ally who had come to save him and not another enemy.

He slightly bent his injured upper body and showed his gratefulness.

"Hahaha… don't worry about it little brother. My name is Gu Yue and if you really want to thank me, hear out a request of mine. It won't be very difficult for you to fulfill at all."
