"My name's Carol, what's yours?" Carol asked the quiet kid following her. The kid looked up at her, touched her throat then shook her head. "I know you can't talk, it just seemed like common courtesy to ask of your name." Carol stopped her as a pizza delivery bike stopped not far from them. The delivery boy got off his bike, opened the preservation ion box, took out a cardboard box with h a pizza, locked the box and walked into a corporate building.
"Seems like this is our lucky day, kid, we get free pizza, still steaming hot. Stay here." Carol dropped her hood onto her head and stalked to the bike. Her invisibility power came in at this moment, making her adopted little introvert gasp in shock as her figure disappeared like she was wearing a predator suit.
'This should make sure I'm not discovered,' Carol thought to herself, gripping the padlock. With a tank, it as ripped apart and the tasty goodness inside was all at her mercy.
'Let's not get the poor man into too much trouble, two pizzas will be fine,' she thought as she took out two boxes, closed the box and was about to leave when a siren wailed. She realized the boxes were floating midair and the police had already associated that with a metahuman commiting a crime.
"Gotta dip," she said as she saw two police officers getting out of their squad car and run towards her. Clutching the pizza under her armpit, she ran back towards her partner who was looking at the he floating pizza with awe.
"As adorable as that is, we have to go kid," Carol told her, getting hold of her hand and swing her to her back as gently as sh could. "Hold on tight, kid."
When she felt her passenger had held on tight enough, she leaped onto the wall of a building, her invisibility getting undone and started running to the top.
"Stop or we'll shoot!" an officer threatened, making Carol hesitate for any wrong movement would kill the kid.
'All I gotta do is get out of their line of fire,' she thought.
"Hold on to these," Carol told the kid as she put the pizza boxes in between them then focused to the task at hand. She fired a string of webs from both her second fingers to the top of the he building and pulled herself forward with all her strength. Immediately, their figures whizzed to the top, almost going even past if she had not used her webs to yank them to the roof.
"Hard part's over kid. Now, all we have to do is bury our tracks," Carol said as she ran to the west side of the building and leaped to the other building, ignoring a squel of joy from the kid on her back. Even with the extra load on her back, she found it easy to land on her feet with h the grace of a cat and continue full speed forward.
Roof after roof, they kept on jumping till they reached a four storey building with an old water tank at the roof. Carol decided it would be their temporary residence so she crawled in through the hatch on top of it.
"Alright, end of the road, kid," Carol said as she helped her get down. She could see just how excited the girl was, it was a shame she was mute.
"C'mon, let's eat," Carol told her, opening one pizza box and giving her a slice.
She watched as the kid's eyes opened wide showing just how much she was enjoying ing the Italy based delicacy in front of her. She wolfed it down in seconds before looking regretful and staring pleadingly at Carol.
"Eat your guts out, kid, this is our meal to enjoy," Carol encouraged her and the kid's face practically glowed before the pizza slices were fell upon by a gluttonous little thing.
"Burp!" she patted her full tummy, barely able to sit upright.
"Remind me to never become a pizza in front of you," Carol cheesily said as she patted her head. The girl gave her a small smile before taking a small, rusted sheet of metal from the wall of the water tank and write on the wall.
'Cassandra Cain'
"That's your name?" Carol asked her and the girl nodded. "Nice to o meet you, Cassandra Cain." She offered the girl a handshake, which she eagerly took.
"So, Cassandra, where were you going, perhaps I could take you there," Carol offered. Cassandra had that was housand yard look for half a minute before shaking her head so vigorously Carol thought it would fly right out.
"Well then, welcome to the streets, Cass. Even if I barely know how to survive them, I am sure we will overcome everything together," Carol said before shuddering at the cringe. Cassandra, however, clapped like an excited child making Carol blush with embarrassment.
"Unfortunately, kid, is his will be our roof for the day. Tomorrow we can brainstorm on how to get money we can use to maybe buy sleeping bags and more food," Carol told her. 'And I can get some much deserved shut eye. This might be the most mind taxing day of my life.'
