Detective Cal Hollis sat in his civilian vehicle, a Ford Taurus, wondering just how the hell he had gotten to this point in life.
The job meant everything to him. It had been second only to his family for as long as he could remember. And earlier this afternoon, after his talk with Kacey… he had gone in and answered questions to the investigators… the ones investigating him after the incident on the ferry.
He had stayed as close to the truth as possible, but he had also lied. Perjured himself. Because what was the alternative? Try to convince them of things he only believed himself because of what he had seen with his own eyes? It was madness. All of this nonsense. Madness.
Now here he was sitting outside the boatyard where the late Nicole Richards' father, Jack, owned a small repair shop. And being here was Kacey's idea. Just a kid, for Christ's sake…
