With a neutral expression, Freed glanced silently at the girl. In his opinion, his use of this girl has multiplied many times over.
He wouldn't be lying if he said he was going to use her as bait to catch the stray devil, but now that she has sacred gear, especially a light-based one that is very useful against devils, he can't discard her because it would put him at a huge disadvantage.
Though he had a light-based weapon, it wasn't as efficient as Sacred Gear, which was created by God himself.
After all, a mortal's creation cannot simply compete with that of God.
He even considered stealing the sacred gear for himself, but he would need someone who knew the process of sacred gear extraction, and it would be a huge hassle, so he decided against it.
Staring Blue is a rare kind of sacred gear; it is not as rare as twilight healing or sword birth, but it is still something that might be deemed rare and dangerous, especially against creatures like devils. However, the particular variant that this girl carried seemed to be a subspecies of the Starling Blue, as it even had a trace of holy energy, which may injure even fallen angels due to their origins.
"What you hold is not magic, but a miracle bestowed upon humans called sacred gear."
Camilla looked at Freed with bewilderment, despite the fact that she was aware that she was no longer an average person and had come to the conclusion by herself that she was a mutated human being who possessed the ability to wield some unknown powers that a regular human being was unable to comprehend.
She had evoked this power in her desperate attempt to stay alive. At that moment, the only thing she wanted was to continue living, and as a result, she was able to unlock this power.
However, after using this power for a week and experimenting with it without anyone to guide or answer her question, she came to the conclusion that she definitely transformed exactly like those monsters, albeit in a different way, and unlocked some skills that were beyond logic.
At the very least, she was under the impression that this was the case based on an analytical approach. Even though she was a modern-day high school student who strongly believed in science, she still referred to what she could do as magic because of the enigmatic qualities it possessed.
As humans believe, magic is some kind of all-powerful miracle that is incapable of comprehending the natural rules of the world and scientific principles.
"What exactly do you mean by that?" One could answer the question with a smile, but it was rife with what seemed like an endless number of uncertainties.
Freed stared at the girl intently and rubbed his chin.
He wasn't very good at explaining things because he was always the kind of person who worked more than he talked. His simple philosophy was, Talk less, work more.
He thought about it for a moment and then nodded to himself.
Without uttering a word, Freed raised his hand, and instantaneously, an intricate magical circle, inscribed in an unidentified language, materialized between his palms.
"Ignis"
Freed muttered this word, and immediately after, a reddish-orange fire illuminated the magical circle. This caused the room's temperature to increase by a few degrees almost immediately.
The flame was raging out of control, and the temperature was significantly higher than that of an ordinary fire. Camilla, who was standing a few feet away, was able to feel the searing heat instantly despite the heavy clothes that she was wearing, and she moved away from the heat immediately in order to avoid it.
As soon as Freed noticed the flames, he immediately extinguished them.
We derive this spell from a modified version of the human magic system, which is more compatible with holy energy. The church teaches this version of the human magic system to its exorcists worldwide.
This is a very basic spell that may be used to cast fire; however, the fire it creates is not like regular fire because it is composed of mana instead of some conventional energy. Freed used more mana than was necessary because he wasn't well versed in magic.
Magic was never his specialty, so he only learned the fundamentals.
"That's real magic!" The girl uttered awe.
"It's not truly magic, because magic is something beyond human comprehension; this is just a spell, or, to put it another way, spellcraft or magecraft."
As it was still dusk and he had plenty of time, Freed motioned for the girl to sit down and explain in detail, as he needed her to trust him, as that was his only method to use her.
"First and foremost, the supernatural exists. From demons to dragons, elves to gods, the majority of the mythology is true, including the pantheons of several religions." Freed said a few simple words that caused the girl's face to change in shock.
"Does that mean 'the heavenly father' really exists?"
"Yes, he does; in fact, he is the one who bestowed upon you the sacred gear, a weapon to fight against supernatural beings in times of need," Freed added.
The girl nodded to show that she understood. Even though it almost sounded too crazy to be true, she knew that this man was telling the truth because nothing that had happened to her in the past few days made sense.
Seeing this strange man perform magic or magecraft, whatever he called it, made her even more sure that he was telling the truth.
"Okay, I believe you, but what is sacred gear, and what do you mean by fighting supernatural beings?" she questioned to further clear her doubts.
Freed patiently tried to think of the best way to explain, which could easily be understood by her: The God described in the Bible created the sacred gears as a component of the system that he used to perform miracles on Earth. It is commonly believed that certain people who possess Sacred Gears have amassed a great deal of power and influence over the course of their lives, and it is also believed that a significant number of the individuals whose names have been written into history were almost certainly owners of Sacred Gears.
Freed went on, "Consider the following example: Albert Einstein was a Sacred Gear user who owned the Sacred gear 'Sage: The Supremacy of Wise Men', which sped his thought process by a factor of a hundred. Though a simple sacred gear that lacks flashy skills and is regarded as a very common sacred gear by the supernatural, something as simple as that made him one of the world's greatest geniuses." [1]
"That makes sense, it's no wonder Einstein's work was deemed to be decades ahead of the technology and thinking skills of the time," Camilla shrugged this time in mild surprise.
"That's correct. The Sacred Gear you have is known as 'Staring Blue,' and it is an uncommon sacred gear that is close to being a rare-tier sacred gear. Staring Blue develops a light energy bow that can shoot light arrows, which are lethal to Devils in the same way as Angels' Light Weapons are lethal to Devils. The arrows that are launched can be remotely manipulated to chase a target. Like a homing missile,"
Freed did his best to explain her Sacred Gear's abilities, but he subsequently discovered his explanation had flaws, such as not explaining what angels are and their abilities. Camilla, on the other hand, was an intelligent girl who comprehended Freed's explanation rather well, despite being full of loopholes and nodded.
"What about that magecraft, though? You didn't say anything about it." Camilla inquired, her eyes gleaming with want for more information about this fascinating hidden world.
Freed didn't know what to say about it, so he called the human magic system "magecraft" on his own. This is because the human magic system is similar to type-moon world's magecraft, and magic is something different because it is one of the highest levels of 'Mystery', unlike magecraft. If anything, Freed thinks that the Devil's magic system is very close to the first true magic. Devils use magic in their imagination, which is already beyond the limits of magecraft. So after giving it a thought Freed decided to give the explanation of type-moon Magecraft. [2]
"Magecraft is the artificial recreation of Mystery, which is normally only possible by inhuman beings. It is the ability to achieve what is impossible through science using supernatural means; while the technique is deemed a miracle, the outcome is not. The boundaries of magecraft have shifted throughout time as science has advanced and Magic from the past has become possible through science. That is the theory developed by Father of Magecraft Merlin Ambrosius."
But, as Freed pointed out, he was taken aback by his own explanation, not by the content but by his delivery; it nearly appears as if he has become a professional lecturer, and the adaptation of [Artificial Human (Perfect)] is absolutely terrifying, thinking of this Freed continued.
"Within the constraints of the world and the boundaries of human cognition, there are no impossibilities for modern magecraft; nonetheless, there are restrictions where something looks to be conceivable. Because Magecraft is a reenactment of past phenomena of performing miracles, it is impossible to utilize it to create new Mysteries; even with infinite research, there is a "wall" that prevents human wisdom from doing so in the current era or even in any future era. The region beyond this 'wall' is known as Magic."
"Woah! I didn't quite understand, but it sounded awesome," the girl said in awe, causing Freed's eyes to twitch.
"To put it in even simpler terms, magecraft is the manifestation of things that happen or already exist in reality with minimal consideration for the resources and time needed. Replacing phenomena that do not exist in our universe is impossible. To create anything, another object must be traded for it, or an existing object must be modified. The core of all magecraft is the application of magical energy to create something that already exists or can exist. For example, I created fire because it exists naturally in accordance with natural principles."
"Oh, so it's like trade, we use our magical energy to create phenomena!"
'The girl finally understood, it seems.' Freed thought with a relieved sigh, "Now, no more questions for the time being,"
The girl gave a small nod. She still had more questions to ask, but after seeing the expression on Freed's face, she repressed the desire to inquire further and instead sat down in silence just across from Freed, a few feet away.
And her gaze never left Freed, who sat there with his eyes closed and his lips pursed in concentration. Her eyes were drawn to the face of Freed for the very first time. He had hair like snow, skin like jade, eyes like rubies, and an angular face that was handsome without being over the top.
And from his priestly garments, she was able to see the form of his physique, which was incredibly fit and athletic.
He was undeniably a very handsome man; in fact, there were very few who could compare to him in terms of looks, even though Freed himself was unaware that his appearance had significantly altered as a result of his evolution.
"Is there something on my face?" The sound of Freed's voice in the room led the girl to startle awake from her daze. A hint of redness could be seen appearing on her face as she shook her head in denial of what she had just heard.
Freed gave a brief half-smile before returning to his neutral expression. He wasn't stupid; he was aware that the girl was checking him out, but he didn't care; he had given up on the idea of romance a long time ago.
The world is a cruel place where you have to do everything to survive, even if that means killing or destroying someone you love, so to him, romance is nothing more than a hindrance.
Even though he had given up on romantic relationships, the concept of "pleasure" continued to be important to him in his world. For him, engaging in sexual activity is a form of recreation that helps him relieve stress; after all, it gave him a sense of mental relief and a soothing night's sleep whenever he was stressed about something.
He viewed pleasure as nothing more than a means to an end—namely, his own happiness—and although he was aware that this conception of happiness was heavily biased, he didn't give a damn about it.
The night passed in silence between the two, neither of them spoke anything but were enveloped in a comfortable silence, as Camilla wasn't as terrified as before and sat silently in her corner, lost in her own thoughts.
Sometimes she curiously experiments with her sacred gear, which Freed observes with great interest.
It was almost at the time of early morning that Freed suddenly received a call from his magical earpiece; a small magical circle ignited over the piece, and then he earned the smooth voice of a woman.
"Oii Shitty Priest, I think I found the hideout of the stray, It's in the old factory situated at the west of the town, it looks like some log cutting factory, I am currently situated in the building a little way from the factory, I am sending you my coordinates; come here as fast as possible, let's finish this assignment." The voice message was from none other than Raynare.
'It seems she did her work rather well,' Freed thought and checked the location on his phone, It was magical equipment created especially for Grigori members; it has the same functions as a standard smartphone but it can do much more, so he immediately checked the marked coordinates that Raynare sent and memorized it.
Freed stood up and stretched his muscles a bit, looked at Camilla, and asked bluntly.
"I am going, are you coming with me?"
Camilla, who saw his sudden movement, was a little perplexed by his question but nodded nonetheless, as her best course of action would be to follow Freed for now. Freed motioned for her to follow him and like this, both started moving towards the coordinates given by Raynare.

[1] In the canon of the original DxD, a Sacred Gear with the name 'Sage: The Supremacy of Wisemen' does not exist; I invented it myself. In addition, I invented a Sacred Gear for the Longinus class, as well as three High-Tier Sacred gears and a few regular Sacred Gears, all of which will be introduced as the story develops.
The (Sage: The Supremacy of Wise Men) Sacred Gear was modeled after the (Extra Skill: Sage) that can be found in the Tensura universe. However, this Sacred Gear only improves mind acceleration by a factor of ten, but the (Extra Skill: Sage) raises it by 1000 times. Because a thinking acceleration of a thousand times is, in my opinion, overly broken, because people underestimate the thought acceleration a little too much.
These are the specific advantages of Thought acceleration:
1. Accelerated Synaptic Activity
2. Enhanced Mental Agility
3. Enhanced Processing
4. Enhanced Thought Process
5. increased Neurological Processing
6. Supercharged Brain Activity
Combine all these with the Imagination-based magical power that the Devils have. Then it's just Boom... Boom... Baam... Baam...
[2] I'm actually quite new to DxD. I completed watching anime last month and lately read numerous popular fanfics from ff.net as well as a large number of web novel fanfics. I started reading IN a week ago and got all the way through volume 18, so I know quite a lot about DxD. I am a Nasuverse enthusiast and a huge Artoria Pendragon fan (Lancer). Despite my limited knowledge of Nasuverse, I am familiar with all of their main concepts, as it is easily the most puzzling anime I have ever seen.
So, in DxD, humans who practice their magical energy are called 'DxD: Magicians', and in Nasuverse, those who do the exact same thing as 'DxD: Magicians,' if not better, call themselves 'Magus,' and 'Magician' is a prestigious title given to those who have reached the ultimate "Truth," boasting infinite power, even surpassing the Gods themselves in Nasuverse. I hope you can see the distinction here. I realize comparing multiple anime series is incorrect, but let's just pretend that my MC's future may take him to other worlds, therefore, these diverse opinions may clash, so I'll use the Nausverse hypothesis as an absolute here because it makes more sense to me.
And as for my claim that Devil Magic is similar to 'First True Magic,' I stand by it. It isn't much known about the first true magic, but based on what we know from the wiki, it can be summarized as a materialization of 'Ether clumps.' First, true magic has two basic functions: it can summon nothingness and it can also summon 'Ether clusters' (A quick definition of Ether would, the building blocks of reality and Ether clumps are nothing but Ether but they are moldable). So, if a First Magic user wants to make Excalibur, the first thing he does is summon nothingness, and then the erased space is replaced by Ether clumps that are further molded into Excalibur, and the final product is Excalibur. The made Excalibur will not be not rejected by Gaia because the magician altered reality to make something for himself rather than creating something out of thin air, which is against the laws. So Imagination comes into play while modeling the Ether clumps. Despite the fact that Devil magic is infinitely inferior to true magic. However, one must accept that it is extremely similar to the first true magic.
