Chapter 6 feel helpless

Pushing the glass door, I entered the lobby. My heels click-clack as they hit the stainless white marble which gave a clear reflection of myself. The wall coated in grey color gave me positive energy as I marched towards the receptionist's desk.

“Excuse me!” I called out the beautiful young lady, who was busy taking the phone call behind the desk.

“Can you please hold on a second? Thank you,” she said on the phone and pressed the holder on her shoulder, before speaking to me, “yes, ma’am, how can I help you?"

“I am Quynh Hemsworth,” starting with my introduction, I added, “Actually, I got the email for being hired..."

"Oh! Miss Hemsworth,” she interrupted, nodding and passing a sweet smile as if she knew who I was. "Welcome to ABC Cooperation, ma’am. I request you to go to the fifteenth floor.”

Literally, I was so touched when she spoke in such a soft and polite tone. No one in Emma’s company ever did that to me, not even those clients for whom I had worked day night, just to make their occasion go smoothly.

Passing back her smile with my warm heart, I replied, “thank you.”

“Have a good day.”

“Same to you,” I replied, before turning around and walking towards the elevator.

Abruptly. thinking about what I was supposed to do after reaching the fifteenth floor, I came to a halt and turned to her again. But seeing her already busy with the phone call, I thought of not bothering her and made my way towards the elevator.

As I stepped on the fifteenth floor, I stood still seeing a wide hall with numerous cubicles and workers. Even though it was early, yet the hall was bustling. At the end of the hall, there were two rooms that seemed like offices. One room was fully made of transparent glass, while the other room was hidden behind the blinds.

"You must be Miss Hemsworth."

A voice came from behind which startled me and made me jump. I turned around before seeing a man in his late twenties.

“Sorry, I didn't mean to startle you,” he said, passing a gentle smile.

“It’s… It’s alright,” I stammered.

"I am Nicky Romero," he gave his short introduction and without any other formalities extended his hand showing the direction, “This way, please.”

Feeling like I had landed on an unknown planet, I took his lead without any question. Besides, his presence had made me recall the call and it had led me to zip my lips.

Passing the office, hidden in blinds, I so badly wanted to push the door and see inside. But my ethics didn’t allow me to do that. As I entered the office made of glass, he instructed me to take a seat.

He then marched to his seat, saying, “You are exactly on time. I am impressed with your punctuality but..." he paused and plunged on his chair.

“But?” I mumbled in confusion.

Gradually, his smile faded away and seriousness coated his face. Witnessing his sudden change I gulped hard.

‘Is he going to say something about yesterday's call?’ I mused. ‘If yes, I better get my answer prepared. Quynh, be ready for it. You cannot let this job slip away from your hand.’

"We are very sorry to inform you that your post has been taken away by someone else."

His words killed the suspension but panic rose inside me.

Thinking that I might have heard it wrong, I blurted, “I beg your pardon? Did I hear it wrong?”

"Apologies, the post for which we appointed you has been already provided to someone else."

No matter what this time as well what I got from him was I had been kicked away even before starting my job and I was feeling helpless.

“I… I don’t understand.” I gripped my bag tight in nervousness. “Just yesterday the company sent me the email and now..." I was losing my mind.

Just for the sake of making a fresh start, I left Emma’s company. I was super excited about it but my excitement turned down no second hearing Nicky. Placing the resignation letter on Emma’s desk and arguing with Joe all came to my mind one after another making me regret it.

"Yeah, we did but everything happened all of a sudden and we didn't even get time to inform you. I am really sorry about that," he replied, apologizing again.

Holding back my tears, I lowered my head. "Is it because of yesterday's phone call?”

“Phone call!” His tone was hard to distinguish whether he was asking or stating.

Raising my gaze I glanced at him trying to persuade, “Look, I am really very sorry. I was totally not meant to say..."

"What phone call are you talking about?" His knitted brows gave me the hint that he was totally not comprehending what I was talking about.

"You... you called me last evening, right?" I asked.

"No, I didn't," he replied.

“I…” I opened my mouth to speak but getting speechless, my lips got sealed. Not being able to anticipate anything, I thought it was better for me to leave.

So, getting on my feet, I threw my bag on my shoulder. “Thank you for your time. I will take my leave.”

Heart beating out loud, feet feeling numb, I stagger towards the door. The dream that I had knitted in one night had now broken and scattered on the ground, making me feel helpless.

‘What am I supposed to do now?’ The same question repeated in my mind with every step I took.
