Chapter 5 live without him

Holding my breath, I stayed as quiet as I could to hear what Mr. CEO had to say.

Calmly and in a solemn tone, he said, "We sent you an email on behalf of our company to join us starting from tomorrow. But we didn’t get a confirmation reply from you. So, I wanted to make sure if you got the email or not and whether you are ready to join or not. But it seems like you are busy handling your own thing. Should I call you after some time?”

Without letting his words calm down, nimbly I said, "I am heartily sorry about that, sir. In excitement, I completely misremembered to reply. I am absolutely ready to join your company. Even if you tell me to work from now on, I will not hesitate to join. I am super ready.”

“Fine, then see you in ten minutes," he commanded shortly.

There was a clear hint of seriousness which made me feel like he was not bluffing.

"I beg your pardon?" I gulped hard and clenched my fist. ‘Great, go on being overconfident,’ a voice inside me scolded.

"You said you can join now, right? So I am telling you to meet me in ten minutes at my company. Is there a problem?" he replied.

"No, no, absolutely not. I will be there in a while,” I said, marching to the wardrobe.

Digging into my pile of unmanaged clothes, I tried to search for suitable clothes to wear, with my phone gripped between my shoulder and ear. Even though I wanted to hang up, I found it to be rude as he was the one to call.

So, I kept on clinging to the call preparing to leave. By any means, I was not in the situation to lose that incredible opportunity. Whatever it takes I had to risk it to grasp it within my palm.

"Hahaha!”

I had just gripped a black dress when suddenly I heard a loud laugh coming from the other side of the phone. Hands coming to halt, my eyes narrowed in astonishment. It made it difficult for me to comprehend whether he was serious or bluffing.

“I am just kidding, Miss Hemsworth. I hadn’t thought you would take it this seriously. I like your spirit. Welcome to my company.”

Sighing heavily, I stood planting my one hand on my hips and the other hand holding the phone. Even though I knew I had to express my gratitude for providing me with the job, still nothing escaped my lips which was embarrassing.

"Anyway, see you tomorrow at nine in the morning," he spoke further.

"Got that, and by the way, I am sorry about yelling..." Before I could complete my words, he hung up the call.

Staring at the blank screen, I was in a dilemma whether to call back and ask for an apology or just let it go. Heart running wild, desperation filled my veins. Due to my naive behavior of not checking on the person who was calling, I was not able to celebrate my happiness in getting the job.

‘Dear CEO!’ I typed a message and thought for a while. Then changed ‘Dear’ into ‘Respected’

‘Respected CEO, I am heartily sorry for mistaking you as someone else and scolding you. I didn’t want to be rude to you. Trust me I really didn’t know it was you. I hope you will forgive me for doing that and we could work peacefully in upcoming days.’

Finally, after typing and editing the words more than five times, the text was ready and it was also sent and delivered in no second. But the desperation inside increased when I didn’t get any reply from him.

After a sleepless night, thinking about what he might be thinking about me and how my future life would turn, it was finally the next day or we may say a new day. Eventually, the new day which I was waiting for was finally there.

Getting myself dressed in a black skirt and white shirt, I rolled my hair and made a bun. Sitting by the mirror, I drew thin eyeliner above my eyelashes, applied red lipstick, and rubbed the lips against each other. Then grabbing my bag, I walked out of my apartment.

Taking the cab, I head towards my new workplace. But instead of excitement, my heart was filled with nervousness thinking about the embarrassing phone call. Not getting any reply from him had added another pile of embarrassment.

“Miss!” When the driver called, I came out of my deep thoughts and replied, “yes!”

“You said ABC corporation, right?” he questioned, glancing at me through the rear-view mirror.

I nodded.

“We are already here,” he announced.

Soon after hearing him, I glanced outside and the first thing that caught my sight was a big nameplate on the grey brick wall, which said, ‘ABC Corporation’. My heart skipped the second my mind read the name.

Trying not to mess up, I stepped out of the cab after making the payment and glanced at my wristwatch, but all I could see was my empty wrist. And it reminded me of Joe, my betrayal lover for whom I was ready to do anything.

The days when I came to know about his betrayal and compared myself with Emma, the days when I looked into the mirror and tried to walk, talk and laugh like her, all of it refreshed in my mind trying to make me sad. It was kind of funny when I recalled those moments when I tried to emit her so that Joe wouldn’t leave me for her.

But as my eyes caught the sight of ABC Corporation building beyond the gaps of a tall iron gate, slowly those painful memories began to fade away.

The mighty building which was enormous from both height and breadth was all constructed with glass. As it sparkled like a diamond when exposed to the bright sunlight, my heartbeat skipped and joy ran down my spine thinking I was going to work on the place which I had always dreamt of.

Even though it was my dream to work for a renowned company for a very long time, I had never tried my luck as the thought of working in a place where I wouldn’t be able to see Joe, would drive me insane. Things changed in no time and there I was, ready to take over my new job with full enthusiasm and prove to Joe that I could live without him.
