With the abrupt appearance of the phenomenon called Gates, the world has forever changed. Dungeons, Monsters, Hunter Associations, and different ranks? Just how had Hachiman's life changed so fast? And how is he the only one capable of leveling up? Oregairu x Solo Leveling • On Indefinite Hiatus | Rewrite now available •
"How many are inside?" Izumi Shiori said while inspecting the giant spinning red Gate. It swirled ominously while lighting shit out from within. Strong gusts of wind were constantly being produced from its epicenter. This caused Izumi's hair to dance in the air behind her.
"Ten of our own and three trail hunters, ma'am. One A, six B, and three C. The trail Hunters a two E's and one D." Yogi Mariko said as she bowed her head towards her Guild leader.
The area around them had been corded off, and a small team of Izumi's most powerful A-Ranks stood ready. There were also seven Surveillance Team members off to the side; each of them was either on a phone call or standing at attention while watching the Gate.
"Damn, Just our luck." Izumi growled and turned to Yogi and Anno. "So much for an easy raid. Now, instead of a C-Rank Gate, we have an A. A normal A-Rank gate requires at least one S-Rank and ten A-Rank Hunters."
"In other words, everyone's fucked." A young woman with long black hair pulled into twin tails and red eyes said calmly. She wore a purple hoodie, a black sports bra, and loose black sweats. Two katanas sat on her left hip. This woman was Kanae Tawata, an S-Rank Hunter and member of the Draw Sword Guild.
Walking beside Kanae was a tall man with bulging muscles and various scars. He had spiky brown hair and brown eyes. A large crisscross scar sat on the right side of his face. He was dressed in a purple tank top and black jeans. The man's name was Kenzo Tanaka, another S-Rank Hunter and member of the Draw Sword Guild.
"Tawata, Tanaka." Izumi said slowly and turned to them. "What are you two doing here?"
"Goto sent us here. It's not every day you get a red Gate after all." Kenzo said and crossed his powerful arms. He looked up at the Gate with slight interest. "I suppose we just wait for the Gate to break to be able to go in. Too bad about your people."
"Weren't you in charge of three new trail hunters, too? Talk about a PR nightmare." Kanae said as she, too, looked at the spinning red portal. "Maybe if that A-Rank is lucky, he'll survive long enough for us to go in and grab him. What was his name? Oza-Ozasomething."
"Ozaki Hideaki." Izumi growled. "I'm sure he and more of my guild members will make it out alive."
"I suppose we'll see." Kenzo said with a yawn.

"Anything can happen in a Dungeon." Shinji said as he leaned closer to the roaring fire before him. The delicious, smoky aroma of the roasting meat filled the air around him. "That's the first thing you're taught when you sign up to be a Hunter."
"Yeah, but who'd imagine something like this would have happened." Marin said as she took a bite of a thick piece of meat.
It was nighttime; everyone had set up a small shelter using knocked-over trees and branches. They were well out of the snow and were enjoying roasted Ice Bear meat near a warm fire. Hirano, Okino, and Yamamoto were also sitting by the fire and were happily eating away.
"Yeah, who would have thought someone like Hikigaya was around? He must have had one of those double awakenings I've heard about! That's how he's so strong!" Okino chirped as he chewed. Hirano nodded and swallowed the food in his mouth.
"If that's true, that would make him Japan's first re-awakened human." Yamamoto said as she held her piece of bear meat over the fire. "He has to be an A-Rank. The way he took down all those Ice Bears was amazing. He did it with such ease."
"I think he's an S-Rank!" Marin said excitedly, pointing at the four shadow knights standing outside their shelter. "Just look at what he can do! He has more than two summons! Isn't that, like, amazing!"
"Yes. Hikigaya is especially powerful. He'll make quite the powerful Hunter when the time comes." Hirano said as he patted his full stomach. "Still, It's no surprise he's as strong as he is. Even now, he's still out there fighting."
"Yeah." Marin said slowly and stared at her half-eaten slab of meat. "But… doesn't he seem kind of lonely?"

Igris dropped a large decapitated head of the Ice Bears pack leader before my feet. My loyal knight then kneeled before me and bowed his head. I smiled and nodded at him. I then looked at the rest of my shadow knights and magicians as they finished their respective Ice Bears. To the right was Iris, blade in hand.
With incredible speed, Iris dashed in and out of three Ice Bears and tore them to shreds. Their lifeless bodies fell forward, releasing blood into the white snow. She then walked around them and removed their heads. Iris dropped them off next to the pack leader's head with a huff and kneeled next to Igris, A satisfied smile on her face. She turned to him and huffed, causing Igris to look annoyed.
"Alright, no need to fight. You all did an excellent job." I said and held my hand out to the field of dead bears. "Now then, arise."

Twelve shadow Ice Bears rose from their corpses and roared into the night sky. Their glowing blue eyes pierced through the darkness as they bowed their heads to me. Slowly, the large lumbering form of the Ice Bear pact leader rose. His height was easily twice that of an average Ice Bear with a flowing mane of blue fire over his head and down his neck.

"You'll be Kuma from now on." I said, causing Kuma to kneel its head to me. Several shadow knights brought me the scavenged Ice Bear essence stones. I nodded at them and placed them into my inventory.
I grinned at the newest additions to my shadow army and dismissed them all. I stood alone in the snow field covered in blood and corpses and drank a mana recovery potion. While my shadow soldiers were very powerful and gave me greater strength by their sheer numbers, summoning them also ate a lot of mana points. To circumvent that, I had thoughtfully stocked up on mana potions.
"Better head back. I'm getting peckish."

"Three hours have passed." Anno said as he looked down at his silver watch. He turned to look at Izumi's with a defeated expression. "Which means three days have passed inside. How many… do you think are still alive?"
Izumi remained silent as she continued to stare at the red Gate. "Past this Gate, there could be a plethora of environments everyone must be enduring. Blistering deserts with temperatures reaching over sixty degrees Celsius. A dangerous jungle full of poisoned vipers or insects. Or even frostbite-inducing snow storms. Everyone inside has a higher chance of dying than coming back alive."
"So what you're saying is that you don't expect anyone to make it out." Kenzo said from where he was leaning against a wall. A look of steady focus on his face.
"…yes." Izumi said with resignation.

"How did it come to this?"
A loud crunch echoed from within the small open clearing Ozaki kneeled on. He looked up tiredly at the giant red-skinned Yeti as it ate another of his fellow Guild mates. Its white fur danced as the cold wind swept across the clearing. Warm blood flowed down from where the Yeti's large, sharp teeth ripped off his fellow Hunter's arm.
"Ca-captain… help me."
Ozaki looked to his left as another set of Yetis ripped apart three of his fellow Hunters in a brutal show of violence. One of the Yetis threw something over its shoulder and landed in front of Ozaki. Slowly, Ozaki looked down and saw the mangled head of Eguchi Anii. A B-Ranked Healer. Her lifeless grey eyes looked up at him dully. The skin and muscles on her lower mouth were torn off, leaving behind exposed nerves and bone.
"We were never meant to escape this Gate." Ozaki whispered and began to cry. A part of his mind yelled at him to run and live. However, an ice arrow was stabbed deeply into his right knee. Ozaki looked at the small group of Ice Elves, laughing at him as one of their forces sunk an arrow into the last remaining member of his strike group.
Pinned to a tree was the now-dead body of Azuma Kinji. His grey hair was drenched in blood as an arrow was stabbed deeply into each of his eye sockets. His armored limbs were strewn out as his body was used as target practice.
"Is this my punishment for abandoning the others?" Ozaki whispered and looked up to see another Ice Elf. This one, however, was riding a white horse and radiated power on another level from the rest. He had long, spiked white hair and glowing white eyes. Over his shoulders was a white, thick fur parka and a blue winter outfit. On his forehead were three glowing purple gems.
Ozaki heard the slow crunching of snow behind him. He already knew that another Ice Elf now stood behind him. A long silver blade slid in front of his throat and was held there. The A-Rank Hunter wanted to fight back. But his spirit was crushed. His body was weak from sleep deprivation and hunger. There was nothing he could do. The Elf on the horse nodded, and the blade sliced across his neck quickly.
As Ozaki felt his world blur away into darkness, he saw the world spin around him, and the surreal sight of his armored body filled his failing vision. Ozaki couldn't help but make a wish as his consciousness left him.
I hope those six survive.

Being left for dead was an odd feeling. Considering the circumstances, Ozaki had probably made the right call. As someone who's fought incredibly formidable enemies alone, I never had to carry anyone's weight. Would I have done the same thing if I were in his position? Would I have also dropped the dead weight from my team?
"Kazuo, Kitagawa! Switch in!"
"You got it!"
I already knew the answer. It was no. I couldn't stand by and do nothing if there was something I could do to help anyone who needed help. The incident with Yuigahama's dog, Sable, came to mind. Maybe it was how I was wired. I couldn't sit back and watch those around me suffer if I could help it. Even despite all the bullying I went through, I still couldn't help but empathize with my classmates from junior high when they were going through tough situations.
"Sasaki! Support Hana!"
"Uh, r-right!"
But despite that, I knew that there were those who wouldn't hesitate to drop the dead weight if it meant it would benefit them. To make such a heartless and cruel decision was something intrinsically human and not. So, some part of me couldn't blame Ozaki and the others for looking out for themselves. But the other part, the part that's growing increasingly every time I get stronger, burns in rage at the thought of being abandoned. To be thrown off to the side because I was an inconvenience. Just like my childhood and junior high days.
"Akio, Kitagawa! Dodge!"
But I was strong now. I was growing stronger every day. With this strength, no one would throw me aside and look at me like I was nothing. Because I was strong. I would become the strongest, and everyone would acknowledge me. Not as that creepy, fish-eyed loser but as Hachiman Hikigaya. Japan's strongest Hunter.
I slid my katana back into its sheath and turned back to the now-dead Yeti. Marin looked at me with a broad smile and gave me a thumbs up from her spot on the snow. Shinji sighed with relief and fell back on the snow while Hirano, Okino, and Yamamoto sighed in relief. They had talked me into letting them try and take on one of the Yeti on their own. Despite my reservations, I agreed and watched their fight.
To my surprise, Marin Kitagawa was a decent Hunter with an impressive reaction time. She was swift with her rapier and dealt fast blows to the Yeti's strong legs. Shinji Sasaki was the slowest of the group and had pretty abysmal skills, but his battle tactics and timing belonged to another class. This allowed him to land deep slashes into the Yetis Achilles tendons, slowing down the monster considerably.
With its movement speed slowed, Yamamoto Hana could land several magical blows onto its body; however, this was due to her weaker level of magic. Yamamoto's blows barely managed to bruise the Yeti's body. Hirano Kazuo and Okino Akio used the opening from Yamamoto attacks to land a joined flurry strike on the Yeti. Their attacks barely hurt the Yeti and only managed to enrage it. Using its boosted agro effect, the Yeti bomb rushed Marin and Okino. But before it could splatter their bodies across the snow with its massive spiked club, I stepped in and cut it in half vertically.
"Wow! Impressive as always, Mr. Hikigaya!" Shinji said, walking over to me with all the energy of an excited fanboy. "We've been trying to take down that yeti for the past half hour, and you just stepped in and took it out like nothing!"
"Thanks for the save, Hikigaya." Okino said with a relieved sigh. "I owe you one."
"Don't mention it." I said and helped Marin stand from her spot in the snow. She thanked me cheerfully as she brushed off the snow from her coat. "Let's head back to camp."
Everyone agreed with me, and we started our march back to base camp. As we walked, I couldn't help but reflect on our five days together. Marin and Shinji had grown very close to me, at least from their side. To me, it resembled a way a younger sibling would look up to their amazing older brother. It must be because it's thanks to me that they were able to survive so long with food in their stomachs and a warm shelter to stay in. They asked me several questions about my life and interests during our time together.
I learned that Marin was a massive otaku with a deep love for anime and cosplay. She was sad she didn't bring her phone to show Shinji and me her pictures, but she promised to show us once we left the Gate.
Shinji was a massive Hunter and Gate nerd and went on long tangents about everything one could know about the subjects. He even memorized everything about our neighbors in Korea. Especially their S-Ranks, so I had learned quite a bit about them.
Hirano, Okino, and Yamamoto now treated me with the respect one would usually show toward a superior. Which was odd, considering they were adults. Talk about breaking Japan's deep-rooted beliefs in respecting your seniors. I learned a good bit about them and their personal lives. Yamamoto was a maths teacher who taught junior high, while Okino was a part-time construction worker. Hirano had told everyone he was a single father with two kids, which was why he risked his life as a Hunter to provide for them.
We had all grown comfortable around each other and had worked well with one another to survive thus far. They did begin to lose hope that we would ever hear back from Ozaki and the rest after so long without contact. It was hard to believe they were still alive. I told them that if we didn't hear back from them by the end of the day, we'd go and look for them tomorrow.
"Everyone, stop." I said abruptly and stopped. Everyone grew tense and entered a defensive circle with their weapons drawn. "We got company."
I stepped in front of everyone and looked off deep into the snow-covered woods. "With all that energy, hiding your presence is useless. Show yourselves."
It was as if a blanket of magical energy was slowly being pulled away. A large army of Ice Elves became visible; they stood side by side and smiled viciously at us. I ignored them all in favor of glaring at the one on the white horse. This guy is on another level from the rest. He's gotta be the Boss.
"I-Ice Elves!" Shinji said as his hands began to shake. "So many…"
"Hikigaya. What do we do?" Yamamoto whispered as she opened her spell book. I ignored her and looked at the Boss. What it did next surprised me.
"Interesting. There's a fascinating fellow among this group of insects." The Boss Elf said with a sharp-toothed grin. My eyes grew wide at the fact I could understand what it was saying. "Hopefully, they'll prove more of a challenge than that other bunch."
"I take it Ozaki and the others are dead then." I said to the boss elf, causing his eyes to widen. Shinji and the others looked at me in surprise at the apparent fact that I could speak with the Ice Elves.
"You speak our language? To be able to converse is splendid." The Elf boss smiled. "Yes, those humans have been slaughtered by us. They were of no challenge. You, on the other hand, radiate strength comparable to my own. Tell me, why are you with these humans despite not being one yourself?"
This must be thanks to the linguistic skill I acquired. What does he mean by me not being a human? Could it be due to my status as a Player? "What are you talking about?" I asked and slipped off my winter coat, leaving me in my black hoodie and grey shirt.
"Hah... you must not be aware. You see, we hear voices in our heads all the time. These voices tell us to kill all the humans that come in our path. But in your presence, they remain silent." The Ice Elf slid off his horse and walked in front of it. "So you see, we have no reason to fight each other. I can tell if we fought, many of my companions will fall to your hand. So I offer you a deal."
He raised his hand and motioned to Marin, Shinji, Hirano, Okino, and Yamamoto behind me. They all flinched when the Boss looked them over with his sharp, glowing eyes. "Hand over those humans behind you, and we will leave you alone. Not a bad deal, is it not?"
Marin walked up to me and grabbed my hand. I turned to her and saw her scared eyes look at me in confusion. "H-Hikigaya. We have to try and escape... there's no way we can win against them all."
"She's right, Hikigaya. I'll throw a fire spell between us to give us an opening to run." Yamamoto said, flipping through her book once she reached a specific page. She raised her hand and aimed it between the Ice Elves and us. Everyone nodded at her plan with grim expressions.
"No. That plan won't work. These Elves would shoot us down before we could make it far." I said and pulled my hand away from Marin's hold. She looked at me with shock and fear. I summoned my twin daggers in their harness on my back while the Lion Great Bow and quiver attached themselves to my back. "Don't worry. I'll handle this; stay out of my way."
I began walking towards the Ice Elf boss, missing the look of disbelief on my party's faces. The Elf boss frowned at me but then smiled.
"I take it that you have declined. Very well, but do you think you can take me and my men down on your own?" The Elf boss said as a glowing silver ice dagger manifested in his right grasp. I smirked at him, and his eyes twitched for a split second.
"It's you who's outnumbered." I said and summoned my army of shadows. My knights, magicians, ice bears, yetis, and beastmen rose from the ground. From behind them rose Kuma, Sasori, and Radahn. Five feet behind me rose Igris and Iris, blades in hand.
My party looked at my shadow army in shock and awe. Their sheer numbers filled our side of the forest as they leveled their weapons and fangs at the now-intimidated Ice Elves. The Boss looked at my soldiers with wide eyes and took an unconscious step back. He shook his head and then began to laugh.
"HAHAHA! What a petty trick! Very well! Before we begin our battle, I shall tell you my name! I am Barca! Leader of the fearsome Ice Elves! Now fall!" Barca yelled and pointed his blade at me. His legion of Ice Elves began to advance towards me with a battle cry.
"The Boss is mine. Handle the rest and protect my party." I said calmly and grabbed my bow. I pulled back an arrow, and a swirl of purple magic spun around it. I released the bowstring and watched as the single arrow I launched transformed into dozens of large arrows, and they began to fall toward the army.
The arrows descended with great speed and skewered four Elves, killing them. This prompted my shadow soldiers to rush and engage the elves in combat. Igris and Iris ran past me as I calmly walked toward Barca with my katana in hand. Barca now had two daggers instead of one. His sharp eyes stared into my own.
"I can't remember the last time I felt excited about a fight!" Barca yelled as he dashed towards me. I leaned forward and rushed him, an amused grin on my face.
"A fight? No, this is going to be a slaughter." I said, blocking a horizontal strike from Barca's daggers with my katana. He grimaced as his blades bounced off my ebony katana and coughed when I launched a front kick into his stomach. As he was pushed back, I chased after him and slashed him across the chest with my sword.
Barca leaned back and narrowly avoided the attack. He spun in place and flipped his right dagger into a reverse grip. Barca lunged at me with his dagger, and I weaved to the left; I slashed his left thigh, and a splash of his blood splattered on the snow. From there, we slashed and parried each other strikes and stabs.

"N-no way." Shinji said as he and everyone else watched the intense small-scale war. "Mr. Hikigaya could summon all these monsters from the start?"
"This isn't a fight we can help in." Hirano said from their location outside the main battlefield. Three large knights and two yetis stood in front of them defensively. "We'd just get in his way."
"S-Rank." Yamamoto whispered, gaining everyone's attention. "Hikigaya has to be a S-Rank. He's too powerful."
Marin frowned and watched as Hachiman and the Elf boss continued fighting one another. Each time their blades clashed, loud clangs echoed through the forest, and bright sparks flew in the air. Hachiman had a large, excited smile as he fought—a smile Marin had yet seen on his face from all their time together.
"He loves it." Marin said, gaining the attention of the other four. "Hikigaya thrives in these life or death battles."
Everyone remained silent as they watched the ongoing battle. The shadow knights struck and dodged the attacks from the Ice Elves; on occasion, they would suffer a lethal attack and disperse but would quickly retake their physical form. The shadow bears and yetis roared as they fought several elves and tore them to pieces whenever they were caught.
The much larger shadows easily took down their opponents left and right. Radahn and Kuma decimated all those before them, causing the nearby elves to hesitate to engage them in battle. Before they could harden their resolve, Igirs and Iris zoomed by them and bisected them in a flash.
Overall, this war was one-sided in Hachiman's favor. It was only a matter of time before the snowfield was covered in a blanket of red and entrails.

"Gravity bolt."
A loud thunderclap resounded in the forest as a bright purple lightning bolt struck Barca, causing the Ice Elf to scream in pain. He fell to a knee and glared at me as he breathed deeply. Suddenly, he began to cough blood. The katana's bleed effect is strong. It shouldn't be long before Barca bleeds out. How disappointing, I was hoping for a more challenging fight. I guess I'm too over-leveled for him.
"You're strong. Too strong! Tell me, how long do you think your petty little trick is going to keep my men occupied?" Barca said and stood. I sighed and looked around.
"You still think it's a trick? Look around, fool." I said and dismissed all my weapons but left my katana. I don't need them anymore. This guy is on his last legs. Barca looked around, and his eyes grew wide as he saw all his men dead and unmoving. My shadow soldiers stood in a large circle, watching us from the outside. Igris and Iris stood in front of Radahn with their blades in front of them, stabbed into the ground. Kuma growled as he glared at Barca with a squished elf under his flaming paw.
"Y-YOU! You little! I'll just kill you, and all your minions will vanish!" Barca roared and dashed towards me. The snow beneath him exploded from under him as his foot cracked the ground beneath him. Barca's body exploded with frigid, blue power as his eyes glowed brightly. "I'M GOING TO KILL YOU ALL!"
Eight Banners Attack: Kamakura Attack. I dashed forward in a blur of speed and slashed diagonally towards Barca. The Elf boss swung his daggers to intercept my attack but was shocked when his blades shattered from my katana. "It's over."

I dismissed my katana and summoned the Atlantean and Ice Dragon daggers into my hands. My body blurred as I cut and slashed at Barca's body. When I was done, I slid to a stop behind him, and his body exploded into pieces and sprayed blood. I turned back and saw his remains fall into a crimson pile. Barca's split head fell on top of the pile, his horrified, wide eyes looking up at the grey sky. Slowly, the light in his pupils vanished.

I looked at Barca's corpse dully. During our fight, the Boss hadn't landed a single attack on me. While he was a strong opponent, he didn't come near Radahn's difficulty level. Still, Barca said that he and the rest of the monsters hear voices telling them to attack and kill humans. Does that mean all monsters have this voice? I looked around at all the dead ice elves and Barca and held a hand out. "Arise."
Dozens of ice elves rose from their bodies. Their bodies are dark and grey. Their hair had become manes of glowing, blue fire, and their once-white eyes turned blue. Shadow Barca rose from his body; his form had become slightly bigger, and two glowing daggers rested on his back. They all turned to me and kneeled, as did the rest of my shadows.

"Kori." I named Barca's shadow, causing him to bow his head in thanks. I looked off to the side and saw a blue spinning portal come to life. We can leave now. I dismissed all my shadow soldiers but left Kori alone. My small party ran towards me with relieved smiles.
"Mr. Hikigaya! You did it!" Shinji said in excitement and turned to the Gate. "The Gate's back! We can head home!"
"It's unbelievable, Hikigaya. You simultaneously took down an entire army of Ice Elves and its Boss." Yamamoto said, impressed, but then looked at me with a severe expression. "You had a double awakening. Didn't you, Hikigaya?"
This gained everyone's curiosity, and they looked at him for an answer. I sighed and looked over at the Gate. "...yes."
"I see." Hirano said with a small smile. "That explains your great strength. But that begs the question... why haven't you told the association? Those who've had a double awakening have become famous and highly sought after by any Guild. Is there a reason you've kept quiet?"
"You don't have to answer that if you don't want to, Hikigaya." Marin said as she turned to everyone. "After everything Hikigaya has done for us, I don't think he owes us any answers. I'm sure he has his reasons, right?"
I looked at Marin and saw her smile softly at me. I turned to Shinji and saw him nod in agreement. I rubbed the back of my head and sighed. "I guess I was waiting for the right time to do so. It's not like I was going out of my way to hide it. I just... didn't want to deal with the headache from all that attention."
"So that's why." Okino said with a smile. "Well, until you're ready, we'll keep what happened here to ourselves."
I looked at him in surprise. Hirano and Yamamoto agreed and promised not to tell anyone what happened here. Marin nodded and grinned. Shinji told me he would respect my wishes.
"I appreciate it, but it'll be hard to explain how we managed to survive while the higher-ranked hunters had died. The only way to explain our survival is by telling them some of the truth. So leave the explaining to me." I said, causing everyone to nod and agree. "Before we leave, I have to go check on something. Wait here."
"Ah! Hikigaya!" Marin said as I walked away.
"Kori. Take me to where the others are." I said lowly and watched him nod.
We stopped in a bloody clearing after traveling through the woods at fast speeds. Several bodies had begun to be buried in the snow, but I could still see limbs and pieces of armor sticking out. I looked off to the side and saw one of the hunters skewered to a tree; Kori bowed his head and offered a small apology. It was a massacre.
Before I could utter my command, I paused. Is this the right thing to do? To bring these hunters, these humans, into my shadow army? If it is, why don't I feel there's anything wrong with doing so? I could hear their pained moans as they cried for help. No, this wasn't wrong. This was my right as the Shadow Monarch. This way, they'll continue to live on in my shadow army. They'll continue to fight to clear the dungeons and stop any dungeon breaks from hurting the innocent. Yes, I'm doing the right thing.
"Arise."
