First Battle

I looked outside the window, the students that tried to escape before were trapped inside the school compound by an invisible barrier. They were panicking, banging on the barrier desperately finding a way to escape. Suddenly, the sky appeared a row of red timer with a countdown of 10 seconds. I jumped down the stage to get Ken, but he disappeared and appeared on the compound in front of the school.

A pixie identical to No.11 appeared as soon as the timer ended. I couldn't hear what it was saying from that far away. I fixed my eyes on Ken, who just awakened. He seemed to be in a daze. Looking at his surroundings, he stood up and started to listen to the pixie too.

I had no time to lose. I ran down the stairs and headed straight towards the canteen. Sure enough, the canteen's kitchen was filled with the bodies of the workers there. The blood tricking let off a pungent smell so strong I almost puked. The food they were preparing were already stained by the blood trickling down their bodies. I rummaged through the racks inside the kitchen. Sure enough, I found a well-honed knife about 30CM.

"Screen. Inventory." I said as I continued to rummage through the racks.

Name: Tang Jun Wen

Well, it was expected. Opening the inventory, I started stuffing all the dry foods that were still edible into the bag. Boxes of canned food appeared inside the inventory bag as I stuffed them inside. Looking around, I found a sturdy pole that was previously used to pull things that were out of reach. I grabbed a knife that was used to cut vegetables and stuck it onto the pole with duct tape which I found inside the drawer. Tapping it together, I finally made a makeshift spear for ranged attacks. Heaving a deep breath, I placed the spear into the inventory too.

I raised my head and stared at the notification. Then I lowered my head and started smiling. So, this is what No.11 said about the ways of earning points were unlimited.

How long has it been since I was rummaging inside the kitchen? 5 minutes or maybe more? I lost track of time. I started sneaking out of the canteen and made my way back towards the hall. According to what No.11 told me, we can earn points by doing anything. So, I had a wicked idea: to hunt walkers. I've watched anime with Ken before. There were a lot of anime showing the plot of a zombie apocalypse where the main character starts getting overpowered by hunting zombies. And now I was crossing my fingers and hoped that it would be the same in this situation.

Another notification popped up as I raised my head.

The Risen's Resurrection in 0:20

I gritted my teeth as I returned to the hall. Looking outside of the window, the other people were starting to panic. I was guessing that they had a briefing of what was happening like I did from No.11, but did not know what to do.

"Inventory." I whispered, then grabbed my knife tightly in hand.

Name Your Weapon: ______

I nearly smacked my head. "Seriously? You're asking me to name my weapon? NOW?" I gritted my teeth and snarled. But I got no response. "Name my knife Scalpel." I sighed and started counting the number of walkers inside the hall.

30CM weapon small knife named: Scalpel

The Risen's Resurrection in 0:03

I gritted my teeth and stood in a ready pose. Taking a deep breath, I grabbed Scalpel tighter. The ground rumbled slightly and the bodies of the teachers started to move. Gulping, I tried moving my legs but they just wouldn't budge. The risen, as No.11 called them, started turning towards me. In a roar, they started to walk towards me. Some stumbled as they tried getting off the stage.

I gripped Scalpel and slashed at a Risen. But much to my surprise, my knife stuck inside its neck. I was surprised, according to the movies we've seen, the most fragile part of the body is its neck. But it was different in this case. It roared and started to struggle. Panicking, I kicked the Risen in the stomach to get Scalpel free from its neck.

Stumbling backward, blood was gushing out of the neck of the Risen. 'Won't the blood of the dead dry out?' I started wondering. More and more of the risen started to rush forward. In a rush, I thrusted Scalpel inside the heart of a risen. Much to my surprise, the risen started to stop its movements and fell to its knees.

That was when I learned that their hearts were their weakness, just like a normal human. "Inventory!" I yelled and pulled out my makeshift spear as soon as the risen fell dead.

I grimaced and hefted the spear.

Name Your Weapon: ______

"I don't care about the name god damn it. Just name it Spear A!"

180CM weapon makeshift spear named: Spear A

I nearly stumbled on myself. I never thought that I could name a weapon just like that. Aiming for the heart, I started stabbing at the risen as hard as I could.

Spear A condition: 50%

I grimaced. Could've said that it was within my expectations that the spear could break at any moment. Stepping back, I wanted to run away. To get myself safe from this mess. But my legs just wouldn't respond. My body wanted to move, to fight. I... wanted blood.

"Inventory." Pulling Scalpel out in another hand, I started to kick the Risen in the stomach, forcing them to stumble onto the ground. I gripped Scalpel and stabbed it into the body of a Risen.

I looked at the stage, only four more were left. I heaved a sigh and started to relax. That was my worst mistake.

The Risen in front of me suddenly rushed forward in a huge burst of speed. I could not get out of the way in time and trip over a body of the Risen. It dropped on top of me and started trying to bite me. I mustered all my strength, only to be able to stop the Risen from killing me.

The other Risen started coming towards us. I started to panic, I'll admit it. I thought that I was going to die at that point of time. Headbutting the Risen, I rolled over, scrambled to my feet, and stabbed it in the heart with my makeshift spear.

Luckily, I wasn't hurt by the Risen. Panting, I rushed forward desperately and stabbed the Risen left in the heart.

Dropping onto the floor, I started breathing heavily. My hands started to shake and my breathing became unbalanced, but for some strange reason, I started to feel good. Hearing footsteps, I quickly stuffed my weapons into the inventory and laid down playing possum.
