A Grave Battle

I stabbed my spear inside the chest of the risen but just as the spear's head touched its body, the spear shattered into pieces. 'Shit' I thought as I curled myself up into a ball when the risen smacked me backhanded.

Spear A shattered

Smashing into a wall, I coughed up some blood. The toll it took on my body to survive that impact was too much. "Condition of Scalpel" I muttered.

Scalpel condition: 20% (Verge on breaking)

I staggered to my feet. Rolling away just in time as the Risen smashed the spot I was at a second ago.

"That's…. that's the one that ate most of the others…. Jay and the others were all eaten by him!" Demetria said, her voice shaky. I was bleeding, and my back hurt from the spot I smashed into the wall. "Inventory," I ordered as I stumbled to evade the Risen's next attack. I tried grabbing the salve I purchased before but I could only defend myself as the risen turned in for the next attack.

"Tang! Heal yourself!" Ken yelled as he threw his spear at the risen just after it smashed me into another wall.

The spear flew straight and landed in the Risen's eye. Roaring, it started to strike blindly at its surroundings. If it wasn't because I rolled away just in time, I would've been dead meat by this moment.

I gritted my teeth and started applying the salve onto my wounds. A tingling sensation passed through my body every time I applied the salve.

Medical Salve (3/10)

My eyes laid upon my abilities menu. Cursing myself silently for not trying this skill before, I closed my eyes and raised my hand.

"Death's Grasp!"

The ground trembled and amongst the bodies of the dead Risen, two skeletons rose awake with bone swords in their hands. "Kill him!" I wheezed.

Upon hearing my commands, the skeletons surged forward and started slashing at the Risen's legs. Roaring in pain, the risen backhanded and sent the head of a skeleton flying away.

Taking advantage of its backlash, I rushed forward and stabbed Scalpel into its stomach.

Scalpel condition: 15.3%

Blood gushed out of the hole in its stomach. Which left me wondering how can the risen actually bleed that much. Roaring again, the risen used its last good eye to find my position and started lumbering towards me at top speed.

"Tang! Duck!" Demetria yelled from behind and hurled her spear into the Risen's other eye.

It seems that Demetria wasn't as useless as I thought she was. On one knee, I stabbed Scalpel into the heart of the risen. "Farewell, old friend," I muttered as Scalpel shattered into dust.

Scalpel condition: 0% (Broken)

Rolling away from the collapsing corpse, I heaved a great sigh and tried to stand up on both legs. "Tang!" Ken came running towards me. "You OK?"

I smiled and gave him a thumbs-up. But in a sudden, darkness covered my eyes, and the next moment, I fell backward and collapsed.

I groaned as I tried to open my eyes. "Ken?" I muttered.

"Good, you're awake," Ken said as he heard my voice. "Where are we?" I asked as I struggled to get up. Last I remembered, I managed to slay the 'Evolved Risen' then I passed out from exhaustion. "Relax, you're safe. We're safe. Demetria has been taking care of you ever since you passed out." Ken walked over and checked my temperature. "We're in the hall. This is the only place that's free of walkers. Probably because you killed them all."

"Demetria? Taking care of me?" I asked, puzzled. Drinking water and feeling cold, I looked down and realized that I was naked.

"Demetria took off your clothes for you." Ken snickered. "I figured that you would love it to have a beautiful woman taking your clothes off."

I nearly spewed water.

"Impossible. Demetria wouldn't take care of me. Much less help me change my clothes." I sighed. Ken raised an eyebrow and looked at me like I was an idiot. "What?" I demanded.

"Nothing." Ken looked away. "She's probably gonna be back any time now."

"How long was I out?" I sneezed as I asked.

"About 3 hours. You needed it."

"What about Devora? Did you guys fetch her after I passed out?"

Ken pointed behind me. "There she is."

I turned and found myself face to face with a Devora. She was holding a piece of wet cloth and had her head faced downwards burning red. Trying hard not to laugh at my awkward face, Ken explained. "She's been taking care of you ever since we rescued her. Probably because she saw you save her."

"Thank… thank you for saving me…. I owe you my life…" Devora said softly.

Feeling a little flustered, I answered her.

"If you really want to thank me, you would do great by bringing me fresh clothes."

Handling a pair of fresh clothes that were a little oversized, I slipped into the clothes, feeling much safer than before. "Where're the others?" I asked. "I believe that we're not the only survivors here am I right?" I asked Ken without even looking at him.

Gulping, Ken explained cautiously.

"Tang, you see…. When you managed to slay the mutant risen, we were not the only ones present. Those who saw you in action started to come close to us for protection. BUT I knew that you hated this and in this situation blah blah blah, I herded them downstairs."

Glaring at Ken, I closed my eyes and heaved a deep breath. "You did what you can. I never expected you to slay one guy to warn them not to get close to us. But the sooner we get rid of them, the better."
