Gifts and Curses

The world's messed up. Monsters started falling from the sky. Flesh-eating creatures that almost wiped out Humanity. But then, people began to awaken strange abilities—Gifts, they called them. Supernatural powers that gave us a fighting chance. With these new abilities, we fought back, and for a while, it seemed like we were winning. Life slowly started to return to something that resembled normal. That is, until the Curses began. No one knows where they came from or why they started, but one thing was clear: they weren’t Gifts. They were something darker, twisted, as if reflecting the worst parts of humanity. People whispered that the Cursed were dangerous, unstable. Some even believed they were monsters in human skin. I used to think having a Gift would be the best thing that could ever happen to me. I dreamed of it, even. Too bad I didn’t get mine until the darkest moment of my life. And it wasn’t a Gift at all. But hey, like I said before, the world’s messed up.

Chapter 6: The good guys

Kai, with his blood-red eyes on full display, asked Mr. Diaz, "What will you do now?". He had just revealed his cursed nature to members of one of the most powerful organizations in the world, an organization whose sole purpose is to hunt people like him. But he didn't care.

The faces of the agents did little to hide their shock. Soon, every piece of gentleness and care had long disappeared. To them, he was no longer a young boy; he was now a potential enemy.

" I'm afraid you will have to come with us, boy," Agent Diaz stated, his voice holding a hint of authority as his powerful aura emanated from him. His eyes began to glow a bright, otherworldly blue.

Agent Rose, though visibly shocked by the revelation and hesitant to engage with the child, knew they needed answers, and they needed them now. The gravity of the situation was beginning to sink in for both of them.

Kai began to laugh like a person gone mad. Yesterday he had fought a serial killer, and today he was about to face the Order. The situations he found himself in recently were indeed hilarious

"Or else what?" he asked, tilting his head

He barely knew what abilities he had or whether the shadow would come to his aid. He was completely oblivious to his own powers and had no idea what his life would be like now that he was cursed. But none of that mattered at the moment. He was angry and wanted to vent that anger on someone, anyone.

Just then a child's voice rang through the area

"Kai, is that you?"

Kai's tense and incensed state dissipated as he heard the familiar voice. It was a voice he hadn't expected to hear, yet it brought an overwhelming wave of relief. He instantly recognized the voice, and it pierced through the chaos of his thoughts.

Turning swiftly toward the direction of the voice, he saw a little child. She had tousled black hair, sparkling green eyes, and puffy cheeks. Her clothes were drenched from the previous rain, and her appearance was a stark contrast to the turmoil he had just witnessed.

"Minny," Kai exclaimed, a mix of emotions welling up inside him. Without hesitation, the young girl dashed toward him, her tiny arms wrapping tightly around him in a heartwarming embrace. For a brief moment, everything else faded into the background, and they held onto each other, finding solace in their unexpected reunion

"I was so scared, Kai. I was so scared for everyone," Minny sobbed, her tiny voice trembling with the fear and trauma she had endured. "They told me to run away and hide, I am so glad to see you."

Kai held her even closer, his heart aching for the little girl who had faced such terror. "It's okay, Minny.

" Everything is fine now," he reassured her, his voice gentle and soothing. "You're safe now. I'm here, and I won't let anything happen to you." He continued to embrace her, providing the comfort and protection she needed in this moment of uncertainty

Agents Diaz and Rose watched the scene unfolding before them with solemn faces, filled with remorse. The sight of these kids, traumatized and helpless, made them completely regret their previous actions. These weren't potential threats; they were just children, scared and with nowhere to go. The weight of their responsibility as members of The Order sank in, and they were determined to make amends and provide the help these kids desperately needed.

"We got off on the wrong foot, and we apologize for our actions. We take full responsibility for everything that transpired here," Agent Rose spoke in a calm and sincere tone, her eyes filled with regret.

Agent Diaz nodded in agreement

" Please, let us make it right. How about we get you all out of here? How does that sound?" He asked, hoping to convey their genuine desire to help and make amends for the chaos that had unfolded.

"Who are they, Kai?" Minny asked, her voice filled with a mixture of curiosity and interest.

Kai took a moment, looking at the agents, and the presence of Minny by his side made his thoughts clearer. He knew what he had to do.

"They are the good guys, Minny," Kai replied, a glimmer of hope returning to his eyes. "They're here to help"

*********

Hours later, a middle-aged man, distinguished by Grey hair and a meticulously trimmed beard, stood by a panoramic window in the towering skyscraper. His gaze was fixed upon the sprawling cityscape below, a metropolis bustling with life and secrets.

"So, let me get this straight," he said, turning to face the agents. "You're telling me that when you arrived at the scene, Richard was already dead."

"Affirmative, sir," responded both Agent Diaz and Agent Rose in unison.

The middle-aged man raised an eyebrow. "How did he die?"

This time, Agent Rose replied alone, "He suffered from multiple injuries, including deep cuts and broken bones, but we suspect the main cause of death was a deep slash across his chest. However, we can't make any conclusions until the autopsy is completed, sir."

The man's stern expression remained. "And who was responsible for his death?"

"We have reason to believe it was one of the two survivors of Richard's onslaught on the orphanage," Agent Diaz explained. "We have already confirmed that the boy is indeed cursed."

"I see," the middle-aged man responded, a spark of curiosity dancing in his eyes as he absentmindedly stroked his chin.

"Have the boy undergo testing immediately," he continued, his tone decisive. "Let's uncover the nature of this curse and understand what we're really dealing with here."

"Yes, sir," both agents responded before leaving the man alone in his office.

As they exited, the man moved to his desk and activated a holographic screen. It displayed images of a young boy and an even younger girl. He zoomed in on the boy, who appeared lost in deep thought while the girl was peacefully asleep.

The boy's gaze seemed to meet the camera's lens as if he could sense being watched, though there was no way he could see the observer.

The old man's smile widened, and he manipulated the hologram to display a split-screen. On one side was the still the previous recording but the other side displayed a picture of another young boy with white hair and dark blue eyes

While staring at these two images, He muttered to himself, "Looks like things are about to get interesting around here."
