I couldn't sleep that night. The next morning, I had to be extra careful when driving Fern to school.
“What is it, baby? You look like you want to ask something,” I hummed the question to my daughter. “Go on and shoot your questions.”
“Mommy, when will daddy be back from the business trip? I miss him.”
The smile on my lips froze, and I nearly cursed at her question.
“Soon. Daddy will be back in a few weeks. You miss him, huh?”
“I do. He is not even calling us. Is he that busy? You must miss daddy too. You don't even design or bring me to the store lately.” She pouted, her voice laced with genuine concern.
“I know. Sorry about that, my princess. I promise we'll visit Aunt Maisy in Seattle soon.”
“I just think it's so cool that you're a designer, mommy. I've always been proud of you, and I want to be a remarkable designer just like you when I grow up.” Fern looked at me.
My emotions welled up as I listened to my daughter's words.
