Genus Ad Divinitatem

So painful were those moments When the earth shook and the seas rose How cheerful life could stand still As though everything was killed All the happiness gone once for all That seemed to me a painful fall Everything I knew wiped away All I could hear was the deafening silence All I could feel was emptiness As if everything was shrouded in darkness All I could hear was my sister crying in madness Adapted from Farah Sherazi's Destruction, Death and Decay.

Chapter 33: Partner

What the fuck!

The Jamil Zahir had scared him. The COP was definitely somehow related to Maca Zahir. If he wasn't careful and the COP catches wind that he was investigating someone related to him, he would be in trouble.

He got in the elevator and clicked the button to floor three. Central Tenebren police department was only four floor high. The elevator made a ding sound announcing to him he had reached his destination.

He walked out of the elevator to see a busy floor. Everyone on the floor was not wearing uniforms. He was stuck. He didn't know who Maya was.

He walked to the closest person to him and showed the person his ID, "I'm looking for Detective Maya."

The person pointed at the far end of the floor at a lady wearing a glasses behind a computer.

Raziel said his thanks and started to walk towards Maya. He reached her table and knocked it, "Hello, I'm Raziel. Your new partner."

Maya looked up from her desk with a frown. She used her hand nudge her glasses, "You were supposed to resume yesterday."

Raziel apologised with a smile, "The rain was quite heavy yesterday and I'm new to town."

It was best not to get on the bad side of his partner. He had enough enemies already.

Maya pointed at the chair opposite her, "You can sit. We will be sharing the same table. Use your ID to log in to your computer."

Raziel sat down and logged on to the computer. He looked up to see Maya staring at him, "What's wrong?"

Now that he could see her properly, he could see how cute she looked with her glasses.

"Nothing much. I'm just curious as to why you have a durag tied around your head." Maya responded with a light shrug.

Raziel was confused. He thought everyone knew who he was, "Don't you know who I am?"

Maya looked surprised, "Am I supposed to? All I know is that I am getting a level 1 partner.

"I guess you must be someone important since you managed to snag this job despite being a level 1."

Raziel was both annoyed and relieved she didn't know who he was. He was annoyed because he might have to explain who he was at some point. He was relieved to meet someone who will treat like any other normal person.

He smiled, "Trust me, I'm not someone important.

"Now, I'm a little confused. What's our job?"

Maya didn't hide the surprise etched on her face. She said with a little anger, "You got a job and you don't know what the job is about? I think it's better you quit."

Raziel was a little angry too but he didn't show it. Vice-Admiral Rowland got him the job and didn't tell him what the job was about. The COP too didn't say a damn thing.

His so-called ally seemed to have deemed it unnecessary to give him any information about his job.

He chuckled, "If it was up to me, I won't be in a hundred miles radius of here."

Maya gave him an uncomfortable stare, "Our job is to solve superhuman crimes and hunt down rogue superhumans."

Raziel appeared to be confused, "Hold on a minute, you're saying not all superhumans are law-abiding citizens?"

Maya replied as a matter of fact, "Of course. After people gain superpowers, they tend to prefer to commit crimes.

"Besides, it's not only the government in Nicaorh that makes superhumans.

Raziel was surprised, "What do you mean?"

Maya looked at him like he was an idiot, "Which hole did you crawl out from? It's common knowledge. There are certain groups that have figured out how to create their own set of superhumans.

"Our job is to hunt down those unlicensed superhumans. The proper channel to becoming a superhuman is by signing a contract with the government.

"Those that become superhumans through other channels are unlicensed superhumans."

Raziel had his mouth wide open. It was becoming a little too much for him. Everyday he was hit with new information.

Maya noticed him shocked and chuckled, "This job is very dangerous for you as a level 1. I'm a level 2 and I can lose my life while hunting these superhumans if I am not careful."

Raziel absorbed the new information, "So do we have any case on hand?"

Maya opened her drawers and pulled out a file. She passed it to him, "Yes. It's about a kidnapping case. They just assigned the case to us yesterday. No suspect yet. The only lead is that the culprit is male because someone had witnessed him committing the crime.

"For the past two months, he has been kidnapping old women of about sixty to eighty years of age.

"I have no idea what he has done to them because no body has been found yet."

Raziel picked up the file and went through it. The only information in the file were about the victims. Nothing about the culprit.
