Historic game

Back in the 1950s/60s as many men read books as women, and different genres attracted different genders; women read romance and literature, men read 'manly' books like sci fi, western, mystery.

The characters and books them were written for their target audience, and it showed. Plot was king, action ruled, and stories were straight and direct with little emphasis on character development or social situations.

Think Foundation, Conan, Flash Gordon..

Now, however, most readers are women- the best selling genres by far are 'chick lit' and 'teen'.. with that flooding over to all forms of other genres.

The 'sad puppy/ gamer gate/ red pill' types complain about this like it's some sort of conspiracy, but it's very simple; there are 'young adult'/ vampire romance books, written for teen girls, that sell more copies in a day than Marvel comics sells in a year. No evil plot, publishers just want that juicy money.

So you will see more female main characters in science fiction, more character development, more diverse casts, more romantic subplots, and so forth, because these are the things publishers, film makers, and game developers think appeal to women.

Not saying there still is not room for Flash Gordon, but expect Anita Blake as well.
