Chapter 11: My real purpose was to see you: Part 1

“So, let me get this straight: you tried to remove the fish hook – with another fish hook?”

Edmund sterilises his gloves, silently begging the army to pull up outside the surgery door right now. He’s genuinely convinced that being around so much stupid is costing him his own intelligence.

“Okay, but it wouldn’t budge, you see,” Mr Bingley elaborates, voice trembling. “So, Allen tried with his gutting knife. Just forgot he’d sharpened it the previous day. Easy mistake. You can fix it, though, right, Doctor?”

Honestly, Edmund is more inclined to tell the fisherman to get used to having only one and a half thumbs, as reattachments rarely actually work, but there really isn’t any reason for him not to try.

“I’ll give it my all,” Edmund answers, picking the tip of the thumb up out of the ice and grabbing his suturing kit.
