Chapter 34: Nothing Sweet

Serine hadn't slept since returning to the mansion. She shivered, walking through the halls at a slow, measured pace. Every time she closed her eyes she saw the burning building, imagining Rem trapped inside. She shook her head, trying to get rid of the thoughts. She wasn't allowed to mourn. She couldn't cry. She had to pretend she was happy to be back, keep the sorrow hidden to survive.

Movement helped. If she concentrated on each step, keeping a perfect pace, she could keep the darker thoughts at bay a little longer. She heard footsteps and plastered a smile on her face.

"Hey," Rowan's voice came from behind her.

Serine paused and turned to face the vampire. "Good afternoon, Rowan," she said. "You're up early."

Rowan frowned at Serine's expression but didn't comment on it. "We need to talk," she whispered. "Do you have a minute?"

Serine started to answer but stopped and simply watched as Isaiah appeared behind Rowan. Rowan paused, seeing the look, and briefly closed her eyes.
