Chapter 29: Grief

Coming back to herself slowly, Serine kept her eyes closed and tried to remember what had happened. Her memory was fuzzy and the smell of smoke was in her nostrils, but she could feel a lap beneath her head so that had to mean Rem was okay. Rem was there with her.

Her senses cleared a little more and she smelled lavender over the smoke. She realized the lap felt entirely wrong as well. It was too large, too cold. She squeezed her eyes shut, not wanting to remember, but it didn't stop the previous night's events from rushing back. Serine's eyes filled with tears as she remembered Rem's touch, the sound of their voice, the fear they'd tried to hide when telling her to run.

The bloody hair on her lap.

Serine shot upright, instinctively wiping her pants as tears rushed down her face. Looking around, Serine realized she was back in her suite in the mansion. Still rubbing at her lap, she tried to get a hold of her breathing before she tried to turned to face who she'd been laying on.
