The Unknown Number

Let's not go to the trip !

Hazel was shocked to hear this words from Mabel. She don't understand why Mabel is saying no for the trip. She knows Mabel very well. A level headed girl who is always ready to help the patients. Her determination to treat indigent peoples has no level of match to anyone not even her as well.

Hazel is a free spirited girl. She loves nature and see this trip as an opportunity to connect with the mother earth and help those poor peoples to get treatment. On the other hand , Mabel is practical and see this trip as an unnecessary risk for their lives. Her intuition was telling her that something bad would happen if they go to the trip.

Mabel - Yes ! That's what I'm saying Hazz we are not going for this trip.

Hazel - But why Mabel ? Why suddenly? Aren't we planning to go somewhere? But now look at this opportunity we can also treat those peoples and at the same time we will enjoy our quality time.

Hazel was confused and didn't understand why Mabel was suddenly hesitant.

Mabel wanted to tell Hazel about her dream. She know that Hazel will not believe her and consider her fear absurd.

But still she try her luck out.

Mabel - You know what Hazz , I'm not getting a good feeling about this trip. Today I have seen something terrible in my dream, which I can feel will really come true.

Hazel - Mabb you're again at this things ! You know I don't believe in such things. I think its entirely depends on a person that what they wants in their life. These dreams , luck everything in this world is a lie. Its us who will decide our own destiny. And I think that we should go for this trip.

Mabel - No Hazz ! I am really serious. You know what I saw in my dreams, that you and me are at the edge of a mountain and suddenly your foot slipped and you fall off the cliff and then suddenly...

Before Mabel could finish her lines, the teacher called them out

Teacher- you both follow me to the practical room right now !

Hazel and Mabel both nodded their head. Before getting up, Hazel look at her worried friend

Hazel - You take unnecessary tension just believe in yourself Mabb everything will be ok.

Mabel look at Hazel and nods her head. Both got up from their seats and follow the teacher.

While going to the anatomy hall, they saw their senior Adrian checking upon a patient.

Adrian saw Hazel following the teacher. He wanted to ask something but know that the teacher is ahead of them. When his eyes met Hazel he made a call sign through his hand and signaled her to call him after the class. Hazel look at him and understand it . She blink her eyes and give a smile to him and crossed her senior. Now both Mabel and Hazel reached to their hell ! "The anatomy hall ".The hall is filled with wax models, anatomical diagrams plastered on the walls and a large skeleton that hangs from the ceiling. The room air is thick with a mix of antiseptic products and the smell of formaldehyde lingers from every corner of the room. There are lifelike model of human bodies laying on different beds. Large Jars filled with different organs of human bodies kept in different counters of the room.

While Mabel and Hazel are admiring the view of the hall , a sharp voice suddenly interrupted them echoing through the hall.

'Mabel ! 'Hazel ! Are you both day dreaming again ? "

Startled ,they turned around to see their teacher with two sheet of papers.

The teacher handed one sheet to each of them and directed them to take their respective seats.

The teacher brought some artifical bones structure and kept them on the front desk

Teacher - Now I will show you some of the bones and you have to write the name of that bones in your sheet. Later I will take your viva.

Mabel and Hazel nodded to the teacher. And prepare themselves for the test.

The teacher now started showing them the bones one by one. And they started writing their answers in their sheets.

After one hour the test finally finished. They handed their paper to the teacher.

Now they are getting ready for their upcoming viva.

Mabel - I wished I hadn't made that excuse that time. It's all because of me that we are in this mess.

Hazel - ( showing her sympathetic eyes) No Mabel don't blame yourself. If we look in at that way , it's entirely my fault. We got late because I slept in and did not listened to you this morning.

The teacher takes his seat. He prepares to call on Hazel for her viva but a student interrupted him .

He is none other than Adrian.

Adrian- Sir you have to come with us ! It's an urgent case !

Teacher- Is there no senior doctor present in the emergency ward right now ?

Adrian- No sir ! the in-charged senior teacher just went to the OT room a few minutes ago.

Teacher - (sighs but with a positive look ) Alright ,let's go then !

(He got up from his seat )

Teacher- Hazel and Mabel you can head back to your duty now. I'll take your viva later.

Hazel and Mabel takes a deep breath.

Mabel - Oh mighty lord ! Thank you for showing your grace on us . I thought we'd be finished today- like,really "finished"today.

Hazel - (smirking ) It's Ok Mabel ! What's a big deal about giving a viva again?

Mabel - ( raising her eyebrow, mock serious) Oh! really my bestie, than who was winning earlier about why we have to take viva again ? Haven't we already done that yesterday? back at the classroom.

She jokingly said to Hazel in Mabel ways of speaking and acting like her.

Hazel - (laughing) HahaHa ! You're really a drama queen Mabel.

Now let's head back to our respective duty.

Mabel and Hazel are both 3rd year students but they check on patients and help their seniors and doctors while they are doing rounds so that they can learn from them.

Hazel was assigned at the gynaecology and obstetrics department. And Mabel to orthopedics department.

They went to their respective groups for rounds.

Hazel joined her group, slightly out of breath which consists of two interns, her one classroom friend Rina and one senior female doctor Mrs Bennet.

Mrs Bennet- (noticing Hazel ) Hazel , any specific reason for coming late ?

Hazel - (apologetically) Sorry Miss, our professor was conducting an anatomy practical so I didn't manage to come in time.

Mrs Bennet -( smiling gently ) I guess you must have came late to the morning class; that's why he punished you in this way.

Hazel - (chuckling) Yes Miss ! You're absolutely right !

Mrs Bennet- (nodding) Alright! I will let it slide today but you must not make this kind of mistakes in future. Now everyone prepare yourselves for the rounds. Today we'll check on some patients and than I'll show you how babies are delivered through C- section.

After a hectic day, its finally dawn and Hazel is free now from her classes and duty.

She quickly go for lunch and headed towards her dorm.

Mabel is still busy with her work at the college.

Hazel enters the room and locks the door behind her. She quickly take a refreshing shower and changes into her comfortable clothes and flops onto her bed. She decided to take a short nap. But before she close her eyes her phone suddenly rings the screen showing an unknown number. She picked the call;

Hazel - (groggy) Hello ! Who is this ?

There is no answer from other side. She frowns and ask again.

Hazel - ( confusingly) Hello ! May I know who this is ? Hello ! Hello !

Still no answer and the call suddenly cut off . Hazel look at the caller number. She thinks someone might be pranking with her and decides to not think much about it.

Before putting her phone down she suddenly remembers about her senior friend Adrian. She forget to call him after class.

She quickly dialed to Adrian's number.

Adrian- Hello ! Hazel ?
