4: First Day as a Sorcerer 2

FIGHT 1

Dan was up first. He was fighting someone unexpected. He thought he was going to fight Nathan Varr, but rather he's fighting Volta. The bored, apathetic, attractive looking girl that he's somewhat interested in. Dan doesn't really have a type for girls, but he'd really like someone like Volta. At least, physically.

Dan had no idea what kind of fighter she would be, in fact, Dan was hesitant to actually hit her. He would beat the living shit out of a guy for fun, but he would never hit a girl. That's what his mom taught him. That lesson was ingrained in his body.

They readied themselves to fight. Dan walked further to the side, away from his class. Volta did the same. They had twenty feet in between them.

This sucks, Dan sighed. Why do I have to fight a girl? And her of all people.

 Why? Afraid?

No, it's not fair. I don't want to hit a girl. Especially her.

 Why not?

Are you kidding me? He was raised properly in that manner.

 "START!" Kai yelled loudly.

Dan looked over to the crowd. He noticed Laura was looking at him. He feels a bit off, a sudden press on his chest. Am I nervous? He thought.

Nope, it's a foot, Jon exclaimed loudly.

Dan was kicked right in his chest. She jolts backward from her kick, Dan slides backwards. Feeling the wind knocked out of him. He manages to hide it and push through the pain.

Okay, so quiz for you. What type of sorcerer is she?

Does it matter? Dan wonders. Not being able to focus on his thoughts, I don't know, he replied.

She's a speedster.

A speedster?

Volta disappeared from Dan's line of sight. His eyes followed a trail of blue afterimages. Ushiro! Jon yelled.

Ushiro! = Behind you!

Dan turned around to see Volta's fist coming at his face. Dan instinctively released his knees and heels. Dropping him to the grass whilst dodging her punch. It wasn't a regular punch either, it was reinforced with Amplification Spell. A type of spell used by all sorcerers to enhance their physical prowess.

A speedster! That makes more sense now, Dan realized what that meant now.

You think so? Jon said in a sarcastic tone.

Just shut up and watch, Dan said arrogantly. He shut Jon off in his head and focused on himself.

Dan casts Dark Gauntlets and smashed the ground beside him to throw himself upwards. He got back up, but that was the only thing he could do. Volta circled around immediately and her fist made contact with Dan's jaw.

Dan loses his balance, Volta drops down and sweeps his legs from behind. He falls to the ground hard, she got back up and lifted her right leg all the way up. Trying to land an axe kick to Dan's face. Dan rolled over and her kick landed on the ground. She stomps the ground and dented it. The sound echoed through the school. Loud and clear.

If Dan took the hit, he could've had his skull crushed. Dan flipped over and got up immediately. He took a few steps back to pick himself back up.

Volta dashes forward started to land blows on him. Dan was far too slow to block a single hit. Dan couldn't count how many hits he took within the ten seconds he was being showered with attacks.

"43 hits," Kai counted. He was impressed. No one could hear him but Sam.

I've never seen Dan lose a fight in my life. I guess he's always had the physical advantage, but against a sorcerer? I guess he's still pretty weak. Sam was intrigued by what he's witnessing.

You're losing… Jon said in a sing-songy voice.

Dan casts Full Cloak to protect himself. Lowered his body, and pushed forward. He caught both of her legs and interlock his hands. He lifts her up and screams as he smashed her to the ground. He pressed her on the ground with his entire weight. Then he focuses his Full Cloak into Dark Gauntlets but only on his right arm. He lifts his right arm up and goes down to hammer her face.

Volta went to guard with both her hands whilst raising both her legs and crossed them across Dan's chest, then she pressed him down on the ground. Reversing what he did completely. She pulls her fist back and sent it forward with her back, Dan opened his right palm and catches her fist. He held onto her fist as hard as he can, then grabbed her wrist with his left. He pulls her down and then grabbed the back of her head with his right hand, then slammed her face to the ground. He folded his hands and send his right elbow to the side of her head, knocking her off him. He pushed his hips and rotates his body roughly ninety degrees and kicked the side right side of her stomach with both his legs. She rolled over and recovered on one knee. Dan used the push from the kick to roll backwards and gain his footing again.

Dan's eyes were burning with bloodlust. His fists rages with his mana. Volta's body surged with her blue lightning. Until now, she's only been using her mana in an abstract form, now she's using a spell. Bolt Amplification. Surging her entire body with highly condensed mana that converts outward to electricity. The two, dashed forward at the same time.

Their fists clashed and created a blast of wind that blew heavily through everyone, the sound was sharp and incredibly loud. Kai recognizes that sound, similar to a sonic boom.

"How does he seem so effortless with it?" Sam wonders aloud.

Kai scoffs after hearing Sam, "magic is a peculiar thing, isn't it?"

"Light and Dark elements have better creative freedom since they aren't limited to high temperature or low temperatures. Just think about the amount of things you could by simply turning into an electric charge or merge with the shadows around you. It truly is unfair."

Volta throws a vertical jab to Dan's face, he steps forward with his left hand up and blocks her attack. Immediately followed by her left hand she landed three hits, Dan's stomach, chest, and face. Dan grabs her arm and pulls her close, he steps his leg behind her's and slammed his forehead into her nose. Blood spewed from her nose. He continuously head-butted her. Four times. Then he dropped low and sent his right fist to her stomach. She starts to lose balance.

She couldn't free her right hand from his grip, so she slipped her left hand over his crotch and pushed forward and lifted him off the ground. She carried him over her shoulders then she fell backwards on purpose with him on the bottom. He slammed face first to the ground. She freed herself from him, then flipped him over, she sends a backhand to his head. His head turned to the side, he spewed blood from his mouth.

He was pinned to the ground; his arms were being pressed by both of her knees. His eyes burned even more, his body felt stronger than ever. He simultaneously cast Dark Gauntlets and Dark Boots. He slammed both his arms to the ground and started lifted Volta off the ground. The amount of upper body strength he possessed was beyond anything normal. The look on his face showed that of an insane person.

Sam watched closely from the crowd. He was feeling incredibly anxious. He was afraid of and for him. Jay walked over him and tapped Sam's shoulder.

"Hey, you know him, right?" Jay whispered.

"Yeah?" He nods uncomfortably.

"I'm guessing you've never seen him like that, have you?"

"Not once," Sam admitted.

"He's kinda scary."

Dan wore such a wide and creepy grin on his face no one would see him as a good or remotely sane guy. Once he lifted her completely off the ground, he lifts her up even more. Then he releases her, as she falls, he catches her waist with both his hands, he screams at the top of his lungs, putting his entire weight on top of her, and slammed her back to the ground as hard as he can.

The impact created a bigger crater. The two of them were bloody and bruised. Dan panted as he was pridefully looming over her. Volta was below him, but far from defeated. She sent her elbow to his jaw and sent him rolling on the ground to the side. He tried getting up as he was on all fours, Volta didn't give Dan a chance at all. She quickly stood up and dashed toward him with her knee outward. Her knee slammed to the side of his head and everything turned black in an instant for him.

He laid on the ground, Volta stands victorious above him. Dan was no longer moving.

"Uh… Is he dead?" Kris wondered aloud.

"No, just really hurt," Kai replied. Though he could've died.

Jay leaned over to Sam and whispers to him, "your friend is insane."

Sam rolls his eyes, "tch, tell me about it," he sighed.

Kai walked over to Volta while clapping his hands. "A speedster's advantage is in their speed. Very nice, Volta. Good job," Kai congratulated Volta for her win. He then looks down to Dan, "you too... If you can hear me at all."

Kai went down and lifted Dan off the ground. "Come with me, Volta. I'll patch you up along with him."

BLACK ROOM

Back in the therapist room. So, you lost, said Jon, leaning back, clasping his hands together, one leg over the other. He was sitting across from Dan on the couch.

"I was close," Dan rolled his eyes.

Not at all? She was a speedster. She could've taken you out in seconds if she wanted to.

"She was taking it easy on me!?" He starts getting irritated.

Most likely.

"I can't believe I lost that!"

I could. It's actually quite easy to perceive how you lost.

"How?" He frustrated.

You were fucking arrogant. You thought you can take her on like random brats from middle school. Everyone here is a combatant just like you. Especially speedsters!

"Did I... Have a chance?"

Of course, you did, idiot! You decided to be an arrogant asshole and got yourself beaten to hell. I hope you know there aren't any spells to heal your dumbass.

REVERT

Dan was quite annoyed with Jon, but he knew he was in the wrong. He should've kept level headed. Instead he was too focused on taking Volta down without learning a single thing about her fighting style. He was too lost in his own bloodlust.

Maybe she was quick to adapt to my fighting style, he thought.

Dan woke up in a hospital bed. He felt it. His entire body bruised, it hurts to even crunch his stomach to sit. He pushed his body up to sit and lean on the bed wall. To his right was Volta crossing her legs on the hospital bed. She looks up at the ceiling, she looks lost in thought. An air of loneliness swirled around her.

Dan thought he should strike up a conversation to show that he's not a sore loser.

"Hey," he called out to her.

Volta turned her head to him, "hmm?" Was all she replied with.

"Uhh… How long have you been a sorcerer?"

She looks up to the roof in a daze, "I don't remember."

Dan deduced that she wasn't very interested in talking to him at all. He looked to his left and it was a window curtain. He pulls the curtain aside and looked through the window.

Dan scratched the top of his head while yawning, "hey, how long was I out?"

"Three minutes. Almost four."

"Gotcha."

Dan got off the bed and felt his body ache. He turns to her, "It's Daniel, by the way."

"I know. I remember your name," she said while still looking at the ceiling.

"You're not gonna go watch the others?" Dan asked.

"No, I won't," she said.

Dan hated her lifeless and monotone voice, ye there was something there that just didn't sit right with him. Or rather, it sat too perfectly. But he didn't want to bother himself too much at the moment. He was embarrassed. He left the place he was in, he thought it was some sort of miniature hospital or infirmary.

FIGHT 2

Squaring up next was Jay and Nathan. Dan was jogging back to his classmates. He shouldn't do that given the state of his body. He was wheezing constantly. Aching with every stride.

Nathan and Jay stood twenty feet away from each other. Nathan was walking in a circle, Jay had no choice but to follow his path.

Jay was wary of Nathan's hands. Usually for heat and cold sorcerers, they use motions of their limbs to guide their spells. Makes it easier to control them. Nathan ran in close while casting a spell from his palms, after cutting half the distance, he clapped his hands together. He erupted thick mist that obscured everyone's vision.

Nathan then stomps his left foot and froze the ground, he erected spikes of ice from his heel and enlarge them in Jay's direction. If Jay had his guard down, he would've died then and there. At the very least, heavily injured. Jay collided his fists together, and his arm glowed bright red like heated iron. Then he pulled his fist back and throws a punch at the spikes. As the spikes and his fist collided, he erupted an explosion that subsided the mist and destroyed and melted all of the ice spikes.

The wave of explosion was nothing more than gush of wind. Nathan didn't even flinch. That explosion would've normally sent people flying. His legs weren't frosted to the ground either, he was just standing there.

Jay slowly walked towards Nathan. Nathan uses mana sense and saw his mana wavelength, like a raging fire. Nathan pulled his right hand back with his open palm and swiped forward. He sent out bright beautiful northern lights, it was a secret technique of the Varr family, Ice Aurora. Jay was inside the light, and flinched. The moment he moved a muscle the lights converged around him and froze him in place.

Nathan created a sledgehammer from ice and ran forward. He swung the hammer, and slammed it as hard as he can to the side of Jay's stomach, breaking him out of the ice. He fell down and rolled over. He got up on one knee, then Nathan casted Ice Rink and froze the grass on a 10x10 meter area, by extension, Jay's legs. Nathan threw the hammer on the ground. Leaving it standing on its head for later use.

Nathan froze his own fists, creating blocks of ice on them. He throws a jab that was near equivalent to being hit with a hammer. Then a right hook. A left upper cut, another jab. Finally, Nathan pulls back and lifts his right leg up and kicks Jay right in his face. Jay broke out of the ice forcibly. His skin broke off his flesh. Nathan picks up his sledgehammer and lifted it high up with both his hands. Aimed directly at Jay's head, he dropped his entire torso to bring in maximum force. As the hammer was coming down, a bright white light flashed everyone's eyes and a loud explosion erupted. After the flash of light disappeared, Kai was holding the sledgehammer still.

Nathan was still trying to slam it down. Frustration painted across his face as he grits his teeth.

"That's enough. You won," Kai said in commanding tone.

Nathan took a moment to realize what was happening. He took a deep breath and tried to calm himself down. The sledgehammer dissolved into mist. His hands still shaking.

Nathan went beside Jay and crouched down, "are you okay?"

"Define 'okay'," Jay tried making lighter of the situation.

"Get off your ass, I'm taking you to the infirmary," Nathan lent Jay a hand and walked him to the infirmary. It hurt for Jay to walk since his flesh was exposed.

Dammit. Why did he have to be a good guy? Dan said, regretting his earlier comment.

You're really a piece of shit, huh? Jon mentions.

Maybe you're right. Who knows? Dan shrugged his shoulders.

I can't stand you.

I… You know what? Fuck you, Jon.

Why me? You're the one being a piece of shit.

You're just annoying. I bet you don't have any friends.

No duh, I'm a soul fragment now.

Whatever that means…

  FIGHT 3

The third fight was Kris against Hiro. Hiro looked nervous, Kris didn't care. To her it was just another day of being a sorcerer. She had started being a sorcerer a few months before she enrolled. Given permission by Kai.

They squared up. Kris stretched her arms and back. She bit her teeth down and crushed the lollipop and pulled out the stick. She froze the stick and created an entire pole of ice. Then a spear tip grew, as well as an axe head. Creating a halberd.

Hiro conjured a weapon too. A doubled bladed staff. Kris started approaching Hiro while dragging her halberd on the ground with one hand. Kris swung her halberd horizontally. It was so effortless for her it was almost as if the halberd was weightless. Hiro stabbed the ground and her axe head clashed with his blade.

Hiro then transformed into a small ball of yellow light, and moves around her and stopped behind Kris. She tried following its trajectory and the ball of yellow light turned back into Hiro and he shoved her with his weapon leveled.

She fell a few steps forward. She was perplexed a bit. She pivoted around with her halberd gripped with both her hands, she swings from the right, and Hiro turns back into a yellow ball of light and moved around to in front of her. He turns back to normal and shoves her again. She's getting annoyed because it was barely doing anything to her.

Do I really have to fight this guy? Or is it okay if I forfeit? She thought, feeling fed up.

Kris decides to sit on the grass. She snaps her fingers and a sudden boom of cold mist erupted. Hiro was frosted and struggled to move. Kris placed her right palm on the ground and froze the ground. Then she lifted her hand and created a finger pistol pointed at him. A slab of ice then erected from the ground and hits him in the chest, knocking the wind out of him.

"I'm really not feeling like fighting right now," Kris told Hiro.

"Soooukaa…" Hiro wheezed.

Soooukaa = Gotcha…

Dan was kind of disappointed in the fight. He wanted to see a lot more. However, the two most anticipated fight was the last two fights. He wanted to see the girl with brown and pink hair fight, and also see Sam fight.

FIGHT 4

The next fight was Laura against Victoria. Dan was really intrigued to see her fight. There's something about her that interests him. He couldn't tell what it was exactly, for now he just wants to see how this pans out.

Kai tapped Laura's shoulders, "ganbaro," he whispered. Dan and Sam heard it. She nodded in response. Her right hand was gripping the grip of her sword really firmly.

Ganbaro = Do your best

She walked slowly to the center of the field, her head tilted and bowed.

Look at where you're going, you'll trip, Dan blurted out annoyance in his own headspace.

Sam walked over to Dan, but he didn't even notice him. His eyes were calmed yet locked onto something. Sam looked at him then tried to figure out what he was looking at.

Is he actually looking at her? Sam noticed in awe.

Why are you looking at her? Jon asked.

I dunno. Call it curiosity.

Interest, I see…

Yeah, Dan said not able to contain his smile. He realized what he meant immediately, no, not like that!

No one said anything, Jon joked.

Dan started scratching the back of his head, then adjusted his headband. His heartbeat starts a very odd rhythm. It made him uncomfortable.

Why are you nervous?

I'm not! Quit it. It's just... Hot, he denied while blushing.

Laura pulled out her blade and held it with one hand. She positioned the base of the katana near her head with the blade pointing behind her. Her left hand reached out but not too far. A Sasagakure No Kamae stance from kenjutsu.

Victoria conjured a functioning handgun made of molten bricks, it would shoot bullets with the temperature of four hundred degrees Celsius.

Laura realized what situation she was in. Against an actual gun, she'd have terrible odds. She immediately sheathed her sword and spread out her legs a bit more. Her right leg in front and her left slanted to the back. She lightly grips her sword, rests her left thumb under the guard of her sword, and patiently waits. A basic iaijutsu stance. It was meant to flick the sword out and pull the sheathe backwards to unleash the sword as quickly as possible. A stance based off reaction time.

Victoria decides to conjure a second handgun. She used an unorthodox gun stance. Her left gun was at head-level and her right was at waist level. They were vertically aligned.

Laura pulled her blade out and changed her stance again. She held her katana at the butt of the grip and right under the guard. Placed next to her head, the end of the blade pointed at Victoria, the blade facing upwards. Her legs close together, preparing to jolt forward to defend. Te Ura Gasumi no Kamae, also from kenjutsu

Sam leaned to Dan and asks, "why isn't she just attacking?" Sam referring to Laura.

"Girl with the glasses has two guns, one pointed to her head one to her guts. That was to counter her quick-draw move," he replied.

"Girl with the glasses? You mean Victoria?" Sam was confused for a second.

"Sure, whatever you want."

"So, she's being wary?" Dan assumes.

"Yeah, coz Victoria," he emphasizes on her name to make fun of Sam. "Could end the fight very quickly. Laura's chances of winning are solely depended on Vitoria's opening move."

"Couldn't Laura just attack first?"

Of course, he remembers her name.

"I'm guessing she's not that fast. So, she's playing defense and countering."

Kai couldn't help but eavesdrop on the two conversing, he's got quite good battle sense. Why did he lose earlier? He thought of a few reasons why Dan lost. It still sucked that he lost though. I know who to pair you up with, Laura, a lightbulb turned on in his head.

Victoria thought about switching gun stances again, but the fight was dragging on. She just pulled the trigger for both guns. Because it was made of magic, there's no recoil and kickback to her gun at all. On top of that, she never actually has to reload, she can create a bullet in the chamber with her mana instantaneously.

The two bullets travelled quick, like any bullet would. Laura's heart was pounding. It was so loud and hard, she started trembling from the spike of adrenaline. Her ears were deafened by the sound of her heart.

She's being overwhelmed… Dan noticed. "Come on, don't lose," he mumbled. Sam heard it perfectly clear. He's interested, that's unprecedented.

Kai pulled back his leg, ready to plunge forward to move Laura out of the way in case she couldn't dodge or block the bullets.

"Pull!" Dan yelled. Laura suddenly snapped out of her panic state and swung her sword in a descending circular motion and ascended the blade upwards. Carried with the swing was highly condensed mana that was released in one direction. Tsuki no Michishio. A wave of mana dissolved the bullets in an instant.

Tsuki no Michishio = Ascending Moon Tide

She panted from her block. She could feel her heart slowing down ever so slightly. She was still stressing out despite successfully blocking Victoria's attack.

Dan made a tiny smile that only Jon seemed to notice. Jon didn't want to say anything. Laura raised her sword up high, channeling mana into her blade. She steps forward and stomps her foot, bowed her body incredibly low, and swung her sword until it hit the ground. Following her swing was a wave of mana that was similar to her attack earlier. Tsuki no Sageshio. The wave travelled all the way to Victoria in seconds.

Tsuki no Sageshio = Descending Moon Tide

Victoria rolled forward and dodged her attack. Once she dodges, she pointed one of her guns at Laura. She didn't hesitate to pull the trigger. The sound of the bullet gave audio cue to Laura. She pivoted backward and the bullet nearly brushed her skin. Victoria stood up, and pointed both her guns at Laura. She started shooting two bullets at a time.

Seven times she pulled the trigger on each gun, fourteen bullets traveling at three-thousand kilometers an hour. Laura was completely baffled and had no idea what to do. Contemplating every decision too long that would cost her life.

Kai plunges forward. Not a single person could perceive what had just happen. It was only short of second. He stood in front of Laura with his right hand gripping tightly.

"I should never do that with my bare hands," he shook his hand in pain. He opened his palm and bullets dropped to the ground. All fourteen bullets.

He caught the bullets? Dan tried to process what just happened. Jon, is he a speedster too?

BLACK ROOM

 Hmm… I'm ninety-five percent sure he is.

"Why ninety-five?"

Jon thought about it for a few seconds, nah, it's a hundred percent.

"Why the doubt of five percent?"

He might've been teleporting, I wasn't sure.

"Can a speedster not teleport?" Dan asks. He thought he knew already, but Jon casted a bit of doubt in him.

Nah, they can.

"How fast do you think he is?"

Uhh… Guessing… From what he did earlier… A few Mach units, at least. That was really far from his top speed, though.

"How far?" Dan wonders.

You'll see on your own, Jon replies.

Just judging from Kai's composed wavelength, he could bolt far beyond the speed of sound. Within his own knowledge, the sound barrier is a benchmark for a speedster. If you can't pass that, you aren't fit to even think you can be a speedster.

REVERT

Kai then escorted Laura back to the crowd, Victoria walked alone. "Thanks, you two."

Victoria nodded in response. Laura was shaking. Her life could've ended then and there.

"Daijoubu?" Kai asked her quietly.

"W-wakanai na."

Daijoubu? = Are you okay?

Wakanai na = I don't know

"You did good," he complimented.

"S-sure. Thanks."

Dan holstered his hand in his jacket pocket and walks over to Laura. He didn't say anything, he just stood beside her. He tried to make it look like he was getting a better view of the next fight. As he took a few more glances at her, his heart started racing. Wow, he was amazed, seeing her up close really changed his perception, she's really pretty…

FIGHT 5

Now it's time for the final spar. That leaves Sam and Heath.

Sam had no magic weapons on hand he could use, fighting someone that looks like he's killed people before he's at a severe disadvantage. Well, at least that was Dan's thought.

Oh, an interesting fellow! Jon exclaimed loudly.

Could you not scream? It hurts to hear, Dan complained. And what's interesting?

Use your mana sense, idiot, Jon was a little hurt over Dan's complaint.

Dan tried using his mana sense and he could see Heath's calm heat core wavelength. It was composed and focused very efficiently. A very reserve wavelength for sorcerer.

I don't get it. Why? He was still green to this.

Idiot, Jon sighed. Just watch then, Jon wasn't interested in teaching him right now.

Heath spread his legs a little over his shoulder length. He clapped his hands and emitted small sparks of fire over his hands. He slowly pulled his hands away from each other, and there were cards flourishing from his left hand to his right. It was a thin pile of cards. He held it close to his face with his right hand. Then pulled down in a slanted line. Cards started floating within that slanted line. Heath held the last card he had on him. A clover Straight Flush. It was thirteen cards instead of the regular five. From ace to king.

It acted like a whip, but every card was razor sharp. On top of that, they were all on fire, burning calmly in the air. The cards had a rule: it would never touch the ground. Therefore, it will always float above ground.

Heath and Sam ran at each other. Heath whipped his cards horizontally at Sam. Sam drops down and slides on the ground. As he slides, he lifted his right leg up, using the inertia from his run to land a kick onto Heath's stomach.

Heath unleashes an explosion from under his legs, Feet Thrusters. He flipped forward and dodged Sam's attack. Heath landed facing the opposite direction of Sam. Sam immediately stopped himself and turn around. He rose up while running with his fist buckled at his hip and about to punch as hard as he can.

Heath slowly turned around and glared at Sam with eyes cold like a killer's. Then, a card appeared in front of him. It was a Heart Ace. It was half of Heath's size. It blocked Sam's punch and sizzled his knuckles. Sam pulled back his fist and started shaking his palm.

What the hell? That was almost as if it was automatic, Sam noticed the card's reaction speed. He was impressed.

The card then slowly burned out of existence.

Heath whipped his Straight Flush up diagonally. Sam leaned back, nearly ninety degrees. Heath followed through, then reverted back in a descending trajectory. The Straight Flush ended up tying around Sam's shins. Heath pulled his whip and tripped Sam over. The cards went back into one deck. The deck in his right hand suddenly thicken. Sam tried to get up but Heath drew a Diamond Ace. The second sharpest card in his deck. The card suddenly extended for almost two meters. It reached Sam's neck from where Heath was standing.

"Don't," Heath said, still with the killer eyes.

Sam gave Heath a mean glare. He didn't want to just accept defeat, he could at least fight his best in a losing battle.

Sam could feel the heat of Heath's extended card. It was burning a bit too hot, but not enough to actually hurt him severely. Just incredibly discomfort.

Dousuru…? Sam wondered in his head.

Dousuru? = What to do?

He grabbed Heath's card, cutting his own hand and burning his skin off. He pulls the card aside and threw it away. He pounces at Heath, both his hands had control of Heath's knee, he pulled them close to him and dropped him to the ground.

Heath wasn't expecting that at all. He was pinned to the ground. "I think you should surrender," Sam turned it around.

Sam didn't want to hurt a person that was already down, so he waited for Heath to tap out or until Kai calls off the fight. Heath conjured his deck on his right hand, Infernal Cards, again and flicked out a card and landed on his mouth. It was a Clover Ace. The card started glowing brighter and then erupted flames that obscured Sam's vision and staggered him with bright fire. It was like a bright flash of light, barely any heat. Sam screams in reaction to it.

Sam pulled back and was blinded temporarily. Heath was able to free himself of the pin. He got up, stood up and brushed his clothes off.

"We're done here," Heath walks back to the crowd.

Kai nods approvingly. "Alright, that was great," he said. "Did you all have fun?"

"Sure," Dan was the only one that replied.

"Great!" He smiled. "Now I'll be assigning you with your partners. Then you can consult the BTC—Beast Threats Correspondent office. See if you can get a mission for today. As for classes… Do any of you want to go to college?"

"Nah," all of them answered in unison.

"Good, then just study by yourselves."

Kai then began assessing their fights. He looked up at the bright morning sky, thinking who would fit who best. After a few minutes of self-mumbling, he finally made the pairs. He made the pairings based of how compatible they would be in the field and how their personality might complement each other. All the reason was so they wouldn't die pointless deaths on mission like his second-year students.

 The pairings are,

 Hiro with Kris

 Nathan with Victoria

 Jay with Heath

 Sam with Volta

 Dan with Laura.

 Those were the pairs.

Dan was quite surprised to be partnered with Laura. He felt a little excited.
