Fate's Playful Deceiver

***DROPPED*** Imagine this: You conducted some research that might have been considered unethical by some. You wanted to satisfy your curiosity and broke some laws you seriously should not have. You wished to protect something you valued but had to kill a few people along the way. Maybe you were just doing whatever was in your job description. Or you just simply wanted to light some things on fire and maybe just maybe destroy the whole world? Okay maybe you went a bit overboard… and now you are sent to this dark world where you are forced to spend an eternity as just a soul. They even talked something about how your fate is to be forgotten. Geez. But hey! It looks like you might have another go at what you desired because of some idiots doing something they had no idea about! How lucky! There is just a small problem though… Your another chance at life is shared with others that had a similar fate to yours… What will you do? *** “You see I was taking a relaxing stroll when I stumbled upon this place and with a heart filled with curiosity I asked them nicely what they were doing here to which they did not answer and instead rudely attacked me. So in righteous self defence I killed them all” In a tone similar to lovers talking about their day Amon admitted to slaughter. “Of course I did not forget about my purpose and from one kind volunteer I learned quite a bit about them. Mainly that they belonged to an organisation called Ouroboros and that they were conducting not so human friendly experiments here” Amon did not explain further and instead with a smile observed Arthur's reaction. “So I am the product of their experiments?” *** The things you might expect: - The novel is essentially a dark comedy with a focus on intrigues. - There are no traditional power systems like stages 1-9 which cultivation novels adore instead it’s completely unique (at the very least I did not encounter anything similar). It revolves around ‘concepts’ and actual knowledge which would make sense in a world of magic. - The world building is also rich and tries to portray a unique take on the fantasy genre as the technology of this world is basically that of an industrial era with steam replaced by magic. - The political and social aspect is also explored and tries to be as realistic as possible(for a fantasy novel which is not serious about itself). - The MC is very evil. I am not talking I kill people kind of evil but I commit war crimes, I am a sadist and I dance on your grave while laughing kind of evil. He is also a drama queen and his favorite color is black. - In terms of romance we have no romance.

Dressing up

Chapter 2: Dressing up

Amon and Arthur left the corpse filled room and entered a lengthy corridor.

"Great! Since introductions are dealt with we should probably find you some clothes. We can't have you walk around butt naked"

Amon closed his eyes for a second as if trying to recall something. He then pointed at the door a distance ahead of them.

"They stored everyday necessities there. I think you should be able to clean yourself there as well. You are completely covered with this green gue and blood. Yuck!"

Amon pinched his nose while speaking and Arthur listened without any major reaction to what he was saying but was nevertheless slightly confused. Why did he need clothes? Why should he clean himself?

He thought deeply about this as both of them walked and after a while he seemed to strangely understand why.

'I shouldn't be naked; that's why I need clothes. I should be clean, that is something that needs to be maintained'

The answers somehow entered his head and now seemed to be common sense. Arthur reached a weird sense of enlightenment as he continued to 'ask' himself different questions.

"Tsk… They actually have a pool here. They seem to treat themselves quite well"

Amon's ridicule brought Arthur back from his daze. Only now did he notice that he already entered the room previously pointed out by him.

He looked around and confirmed that in fact there was a small round pool in the middle of the room. Surrounding it were different chairs, some had clothes or towels hanging on them. Near the walls were wooden lockers which had carved names on them. A couple were open revealing personal belongings varying from simple clothing to expensive looking jewellery and accessories.

"Wash yourself"

Amon turned to look at Arthur and practically ordered him to do so.

"Okay"

Arthur replied simply and entered the pool.

He started to wash himself which looked comedic at first since he seemed to have no idea what he was doing but quickly his movements improved like he was doing so everyday for a very long time.

He was amazed as he looked at the mixture of the green liquid and blood disappear in the water as if it completely ceased to exist.

'Magic. Purification magic'

An answer quickly appeared in his mind and was no longer confused or amazed. It seemed simple to him and even strangely crude. He then quickly finished washing himself and walked out of the pool.

Amon clearly wanted to say something but stopped when he noticed Arthur raising and then glancing at his right hand. A small round magical array that was orange in colour formed from strange and unknown letters. Shortly after a heat wave struck Arthur that evaporated all water on him.

"Interesting…"

Amon commented simply with slightly narrowed eyes, however he did not comment further and instead continued to instruct Arthur.

"Search the lockers and pick some clothes to wear and also take everything you deem useful. They don't need their stuff anymore and some coin will surely prove useful to you"

Arthur did not question and in silence did as he was instructed.

He picked and wore some plain clothes and grabbed a light green cloak. His colour palette was clearly different from Amon as all he picked was of a lighter colour.

He then proceeded to search the lockers for everything of value. That involved pouches filled with weird white coloured coins, crystals that varied in colour, jewellery and other strange items that seemed of value but he had no idea what they were even though he 'asked' himself. Among those items a pendant with a tiny crystal which was emerald green in colour caught the most of his attention.

He carefully sorted and put everything on the floor for Amon to see.

"See that pendant with a small green crystal? Wear it and wrap around your wrist"

Arthur did so and when he was done he felt a strange connection with the pendant. He focused on it but something seemed to have repealed his probing. He grabbed his head and hissed in pain, however he instantly understood what had happened as he 'questioned' this reaction as soon as he felt pain.

The pendant was encrypted so that only the owner could use it.

That however did not stop him as he already knew what to do. He unwrapped the pendant and with a serious expression examined it and after a short while a soft sound of breaking glass accompanied the illusory small chains that fell off the pendant.

It was unlocked.

"You broke it? From what I learned something like that was supposed to be hard. Oh well whatever"

Amon questioned with a slight surprise but that was the limit of his reaction and Arthur simply scratched his head.

'Hard? But I just focused on it a bit'

He was confused as to why something so simple was considered hard by Amon but quickly focused on the pendant again. This time nothing restricted his inspection.

"This…"

Arthur muttered as he found himself in a small world made of emerald green. Different items filled this small space but it was mostly filled with different books and notes. Some white coins were also there but in a limited number. It was clear that this pendant was mainly dedicated to storing books of potentially high value.

He was confused as to what was going on and quickly lost focus which caused him to leave the strange world.

"What's in there?"

Amon casually asked after seeing Arthur finishing his inspection.

"Mostly books and green"

Arthur replied, clearly still confused as to what he experienced.

"Books? Just throw all of that out in the corner"

Amon replied with a scoff.

"But… how?"

Arthur looked at Amon with a puppy like expression since 'asking' himself gave him no answer.

"You can break an encryption on a spatial crystal but you don't know how to use it? Sigh… just think of throwing all of that stuff out while focusing your spirituality on it…"

Amon replied with a look of resignation. He clearly had no idea what to think of the abilities Arthur showcased.

"Okay"

Arthur replied simply and did as instructed. A small pile of books suddenly appeared in the corner.

"Good. Now take the money and the items that you fancy as for the rest… burn it all"

"Who reads books anyway?" - Amon
