I could've sworn I almost became blind as my eyes shut really tightly, feeling like they were almost burned out by the harsh light shining above me. I was lying horizontally, with my heart pounding against my chest and my breath was so heretic that I had trouble even taking enough air. Then again those rugby knockoffs did pull a middle finger at us with that bundle of stun grenades. Still how in god's name did I survive that metal bar to the head, was a dilemma for me. For all I know this might just be me remembering my past, however, the muffled voice and the constant shifting of white, blinding light made me think otherwise. Lifting my frail arms up slowly, I rubbed my heavy eyelids with both of my weak hands, try to get my eyes open.
"W-where am I...?"
I murmured seemly to no one, since I didn't expect an answer, yet after a few seconds someone responded to my question, almost making me freak out. After a few more attempts of forcing my heavy eyes to open, I finally managed to do it, albeit not completely, yet more than enough to examine the barely lit room I was inside. I looked to my right, seeing white cushions against my arm.
"Thank god, you are awake, kiddo. Wait for a second, I'll bring the doc to you."
A few seconds later, I heard a door opening before another voice talking to me, this time thought, one I wasn't familiar with.
"Now, now calm down boy, you are still not completely healed from that blow to the head. However, it's good that you've woken up. Thought you should stay in bed for today, since I'd rather not have you been brought here again some hours later, now do we?"
My whole body tensed up as soon as I heard the voice coming from all around me. I turned in a random direction and thankfully was the right way from where the voice came from.
"I was afraid you wouldn't be able to wake up after being out for two days whole days. Guess my handy work did well on you or whatever happened to you made you better than most at healing blunt damage to the brain."
While speaking to me, the man sat down on a small, white chair before taking a sip from his mug. I felt perplexed. I was out for two days. Damn, that was worse than I expected. While those scientists did anything they could on me, the longest amount of time I was out was only a single day, and yet, now I just heard that I was two days out? To be honest with me, it felt like I was out for a shorter amount of time than that... yet for some reason, it didn't feel like that, since, well I barely can move my arms and eyes. Even though the doc said not to move that much, I try to pull myself up off the bed. As soon as I got to a sitting position, everything blurred out for a second, before everything returned to normal.
"Easy there, young man. I'd rather not have to face your friend if something happens to you in my clinic. I don't know if that medicine in you has worn off, but you might want to take it easy for a while. Just to get your bearings straight, before you even think of doing something like this, at least until I give you the green light to leave the clinic."
"What happened to …"
"To your friends, I take it?"
"Yes. Do you perhaps have any idea?"
"Well, the big guy told me what happened and since I was the one pulling two bullets from James, I kind of got the bigger picture. The legionnaires returned, this time with all of their force I reckon, and they even used something blasphemous to their religion, at least I think so. After knocking you out in melee, your big friend took the people that were ready to finish you, before charging at the rest. James took two bullets one in the arm while the other nearly missed his liver. Lily was probably the luckiest one amongst you four since she only had a few scratches on her. In the end, all of the legionnaires were killed by your angry friend before your group returned in a hurry back here."
"Did you guys find anything in these two days?"
"I'm not a soldier, kid. However, I did hear a few things front the guys that went through the tunnels. Apparently, the legion got their hands on the smuggling tunnels that some of the raiders used to bypass the Outpost and from there they thought it would be a good idea to capture some tunnels for some reason."
"If I were to guess, they wanted to ambush the NCR and the caravans that would go in and out of the Mojave."
"If you say so, kid. Well, I'll let you rest now. Tomorrow we'll see how you are doing and see if we can set you free."
And true to his words the doc checked on me the next day. Thankfully for everyone, I was let free after the doc failed to find something wrong with me. To be fair, even if I were to be still sick or injured, I would have escaped front that place than stay in bed eating some of the worst oatmeal I ever ate, and that comes from someone that had been a test subject.
After I left the clinic, the first thing that I did was to meet Vito and see what we got after helping the couple fish out the legion and recapture the farm and the tunnels.
Unsurprisingly, I found him drinking some moonshine with James in front of his house. As soon as they saw me, both man and super mutant smiled at me before James invited me over.
"Dante! You don't know how good is to see you out of that clinic."
"It's nice to see you too, James. How are your wounds?"
"Healing, and fortunately that earned me a few days of free time from work and more time with my wife and we'll new friends. Vito and I were talking about his past, before the war."
"Despite forgetting about me, not exactly sure how since I'm the only green giant you know, I still visited you kid, you know?"
"Sorry Vito, I'm still a little lightheaded from...that."
"Fair point, now come here. Lily is making some homemade lasagna and between the three of us, nothing in his world would stop me from eating the best thing. I've ever known."
