Jace's POV
I am leaning on the glass elevator wall of the Miracle White Building. As usual, I am bringing my long brown safety file organizer. I put my resume and all the documents needed for my application, including my passport, birth certificate, college diploma, etc. I will never surrender, even this is my third time being here in this skyscraper. I will never get tired, and I flew to New York just for this.
"Jace, please follow me to the conference hall. You are number 58." Trish said, the moment I met her in her office, she is the secretary of Mr. Norton, the Security Recruitment Office head. I know Trish, for we attended the same school during our High School Days, and we are very close since she is my best friend. And because of her, I started chasing my dream of becoming an Elite Bodyguard, she sent me a message she is in New York, and she is working at the White Group of Companies Recruitment Department.
"Thank you so much, Trish," I said. I was smiling at her.
"Don't mention it, Jace. Welcome back. I hope they will hire you this time so that you will become a millionaire, and then you will treat me to a one-week vacation to Hawaii." She responded while we are waiting for the elevator.
"Sure! I promise you, Trish, the moment I have the contract and receive my paycheck, I will book you to Hawaii." I answered, laughing.
"Are you certain about that? I am just kidding." She stated.
"I am dead serious." I countered her. She just shook her head.
"Let us have dinner tonight, my treat, and please send my regards to Caitlin, Jace." She added.
"Sure," I replied, then she turned away, going back to her office.
"I will. Caitlin misses you, Trish." I said, and she stopped in her tracks and turned to face me.
"Me too, Jace. I missed my other best friend so much." She spoke. I can see the look of sadness in her eyes.
"I have been telling her to work here in New York, but she always declines. Many schools here need a music teacher, and she will do great here, Jace." Trish told me.
"I guess once they will accept me, maybe she will change her mind, Trish," I said. I sounded so hopeful.
"Yes! I hope you will become an elite bodyguard so that we will be here in New York, and she has no reason to stay in California, there are many opportunities here, and she will love it here." She declared I can see the excitement on her face. And she walked back to her office while I proceed to the conference hall.
When I glance inside the conference room, many applicants are seated on the chairs, waiting for their turn. I took the exam yesterday. It involves many things, I find it unnecessary for the job, but since they included it, I don't have a choice but to answer all the questions.
First, I fall in line to get my result of the exam, and then if I pass, I will proceed to the person in charge of the last interview.
"Jace Dylan King?" The woman in her mid-thirties called my name. I stand up and go to her.
"Have a seat, please." She stated.
"Thank you!" I replied.
"Wow! Congratulations, you study well. You've got the highest score, Mr. King." She spoke, smiling at me.
"This is great. Thank you very much, Ma'am." I said, unable to control my wide grin.
"Just bring the result and your number, then proceed to the office of the Manager of the Recruitment Department, her secretary will assist you from there." She said. I stood up and shook her hand, and I am so excited to go to the Manager's room.
The interview went well. I have been studying many questions about the White Group of Companies and more about the laws and first aid. At last, at two-thirty in the afternoon, they called me to the department of Mr. Norton.
"Mr. King, I am so happy to tell you that this time you pass, you nailed the final interview, you also aced the written examination, all you have to do now is to prepare yourself for the final test, and of course you have to pass the six months training, at the White Training Facilities." Mr. Norton said he has been so good to me for all the time I was here, for how many times I failed during the elimination round.
"Thank you, Mr. Norton." I smiled, then I release a sigh of relief.
I worked out everything to have a Bachelor's Degree for this one. I attended seminars, workshops, and courses for first aid. I take Security Training, trained during my spare time because I want to be the best, and I wanted to impress the business tycoon Thomas White and to capture the interest of his daughter.
I will return to my hotel and enjoy the city of New York while I still can. As per instruction by Mr. Norton, the following day, all one hundred applicants who pass the preliminary exam and interview will be brought to the facility riding the company bus. There will be three buses scheduled for tomorrow, the first bus will depart at eight o'clock in the morning, and I belong to the original batch.
I have stable work in California, I am a firefighter, and I loved my job, but I opted to resign. It seems like I already have a hunch about this, that they will choose me. Since I was eighteen years old, it became my dream to follow in my father's footsteps. I wanted to become one of the Elite Bodyguards of the White Family.
When I arrived at the hotel, I felt so tired that I went to bed.
"Hey! Son! How was it, Jace? Did you get in?" Mom said she is on the other line. I am talking to her using FaceTime.
"Yes, Mom. I aced this time." I responded I couldn't hide my happiness.
"Hey! That is good news, dear. Congratulations. I am so delighted for you, you have marvelous work here, and we are content being here. I am just wondering why you want that job, where you perceive it can be perilous." She replied.
"I know, but Mom, this is the only thing I prefer," I spoke. I look at her beautiful face.
"Jace, I realize it was all my fault that I didn't tell you about your father. I should have told you about him when you were growing up." She stated I could feel the sadness in her voice.
"It is okay, Mom, we had enjoyed our moments, and I had splendid memories of him. I wish he didn't die that moment, so we have time to do the things he promised me."
"I know why you want this job so bad, but be careful." I can see the tears of my mother fall on her cheeks.
"Please don't cry, Mom. I will be okay, and I can take care of myself." I reassured her.
"Yes, Jace, but remember they are rich. Besides, it is not her fault to be kidnapped because she is born that way. Her life is always in danger, besides your Old man loved his job so much." Mom said.
"Mom, if she is not only spoiled, father could have been alive. I have learned that she sneaked out during that night. She even made Dad drink something so he will pass out." I told my mom in a soft voice.
"I won't do illegal actions that can jeopardize my life. I want to make her learn something from me, and she needs to learn, mom, that there are things money can't buy." I added.
"How could she endanger her bodyguard because of her selfishness? She just wanted to have fun if she could have been more careful. Maybe Dad is still alive." I said I couldn't hide my anger.
"Take it easy with her Jace, she is only young, and she lost her mother during her birth. It is sad, don't you realize?" Mom asked me, and I don't buy it.
"Mom, she has to be responsible for her actions. Her mommy's death is the course of nature, and I don't care if she doesn't have a mom. Dad died because of her, because of her stupidity." I became angrier.
"Hey! I think you better call Caitlin now so that you will calm down." Mom said she is looking at me.
"Okay, Mom, I will have dinner with Trish later. I am sorry, I can't wait to see the Heiress of the White Empire. She better asked for a miracle right now because the moment I will become her bodyguard, I will drive her life miserable. Now that I am on my way to meet her, I will make sure that she will learn this time that money is not everything." I said, smiling at my mother.
"Wow! That is great, and tell Trish my regards, please Jace, go easy with the Heiress." My mom replied.
"Don't worry, mom, and I will make her regret everything she had done to dad." I declared.
"Just always, be careful. I love you, son, bye Jace." She waves her hand and hangs up the phone.
I tried calling Caitlin, I already miss her, but it sent my call to voicemail. Maybe she is still at the office.
After my dinner with Trish, I go back to my hotel. But because of my excitement to become a trainee in the White Family Elite Bodyguard Program, I could not sleep at all. No matter how I struggled to close my eyes, I felt it was because I am anxious to meet Miracle White.
