Unexpected

As Li Ruining prepared lunch for Zixin, she felt someone hug her from behind. She smiled and held her husband's hands. Zixin felt so fortunate to have Ruining and their unborn child, who will come into their world soon. 

"I love you." Zixin whispered into her ears as he hugged her tighter. Ruining stuffed him with his favorite egg roll into his mouth. "If you're like this, I can't do my work." Zixin shook his head and kept on hugging her. "I'm not leaving you. I don't want to work today." She unwrapped his hand, which was around her pregnant belly, and turned around, "What am I going to do with you?" He looked his beautiful wife in the eye and kissed her deeply and affectionately. 

After Ruining prepared Zixin's lunch, she hugged him before he went to work. 

"Zixin, we'll both wait for you. Come back safely." Zixin nodded and kissed her forehead. "I'll be back soon. You should go in now. It's chilly today." She nodded and waved goodbye as she saw the car drive into the distance. 

After she went back into the house, she received a text message from Zixin. 

"I miss you, sweetheart. How's our little one doing?" She smiled and texted back. 

"Doing well and both of us miss you." 

Zixin texted back again and said, "I love you, Ruining. I cannot live without you." 

"I love you as well. I have a surprise for you after you come back from work." She replied with a happy emoji and left the phone on the table.

Huiyin exited the airport with a sigh of relief. She will start a new life in Shanghai. As she scrolled down her social media feed on her phone, she saw an updated picture of her ex-boyfriend with another girl in Shanghai. Even though she deleted his contact information and blocked him on social media, there was no escape. 

When she arrived at her new apartment, a chubby lady who was the landlord greeted her. The landlord was excited to meet her and showed her room eagerly. After unlocking the door, the room was bigger than she expected. All the furniture, walls, and other appliances were all newly renovated. Huiyin thanked the landlord after she explained everything to her. 

Huiyin unpacked everything from bedding to room decorations. She couldn't wait to start her new life and she couldn't care less if her ex-boyfriend was in Shanghai. 

In the evening, Huiyin went shopping for essentials before the storm settled in overnight. But to her surprise, heavy rain poured before she could get back to her car. She ran and went inside her car as fast as possible. Although she was soaked, she was thankful to have extra clothes in her car. 

She began driving back after changing her wet clothes into dry ones. Before she could turn on some relaxing background music, she suddenly braked when she saw a car ramming into someone, then drove away. She froze for a second, then opened her car door. All the other cars stopped, but no one came out because of the heavy rain. She grabbed her umbrella, which was already inside her car, and ran out. Since no cars were moving, she went to help the victim despite being soaked again. 

She called 119 (China's emergency phone number) from her phone and asked for help since the victim was bleeding from a head injury and also bleeding non-stop between her legs. Since the operator told Huiyin the ambulance would arrive at least fifteen minutes late due to traffic, Huiyin needed to keep the victim alive. She asked questions loud and clear, 

"Mrs! Mrs! Can you hear me?"

The victim slowly opened her eyes and nodded. 

"You can hear me, right? What is your name?" Huiyin went closer to her so she can hear clearer

After a few seconds, the victim replied in broken sentences.

"Rui…Ning… please… save my baby. Please save my baby." Huiyin looked at Ruining, then looked at all the blood between her legs. She calmly told Ruining to stay strong and awake. 

"Mrs. Ruining, how many months?" 

Ruining struggled to speak and replied, "T-T-Three… P-p-please… s-save my baby." Huiyin nodded. "The ambulance will arrive soon. Stay strong! I know it's hard. Stay strong for your child, okay?" Ruining smiled weakly as her face went pale and purple. Huiyin kept on asking her questions and tried to keep her warm. 

Ruining reached out for her hand and Huiyin held them tightly. 

As her breathing became shallower each minute, it was difficult for her to speak. But Ruining still tried her best to stay awake, "P-please tell my husband…that I am s-sorry for not getting him a b-b-birthday cake. A-And I-I w-want to hear his voice… o-one more time." Huiyin nodded and took out Ruining's phone and searched for her husband's phone number. Before she could find it, the ambulance arrived and immediately put Ruining into the ambulance. After explaining everything to the paramedics, they allowed her to follow them. 

Huiyin followed the ambulance from behind and when she arrived, she saw Ruining being taken away by emergency doctors and nurses. She went to the nursing station, but everywhere she went was crowded. She stood beside the nurses' station and held Ruining's phone tightly as she shivered from the cold. She took a deep breath and calmed herself. "You can do this. You can do this. You can do this." 

Before she could look for Ruining's husband's phone number, he called instead. She clenched her fist and closed her eyes, then answered. 

"Hello?" 

"Ruining, I called you multiple times. Did something happen to you?" 

"Are you Ruining's husband?" Huiyin asked.

"Yes, I am. Who are you?" 

"You need to come to the hospital. We have sent her to the emergency room. A black vehicle struck her. I saw it with my own eyes." Huiyin replied and then she heard beeping at the other end of the line.  Zixin immediately asked his assistant to locate his wife's phone, and it was in People's hospital. He wasn't ready to say farewell to his beloved wife..

"Ruining, please wait for me. Stay alive, please!" He pleaded with tears in his eyes.
