How it Started Part I

"We fail to succeed and succeed to fail." -Chloe Barbaro

"Chloe, make sure you remember what I told you," said Francesca, one of the nuns that resided at the orphanage.

"I have to listen and pay attention," I replied, giving her a warm smile.

Today, I was finally getting adopted. For some reason, this joyous occasion made me sad. The thought of leaving the only place I knew and the only people that knew me made me sad.

"They're here," said the head madam peeking her head through the door. Hearing her words, I stood up straight and fixed my dress.

Grabbing my hand, Nun Fransceca escorted me out of the room.

Facing a set of windows, the sound of children laughing made it to my ears. Seeing this, I felt my chest tighten at the memories made in this building.

As the window disappeared from my sight, a set of doors appeared. The only people permitted past these doors were the staff, other times children, like me.

"Are you ready, Chloe ?"

I hummed in response as the set of doors opened. For the first time in my life, I felt nervous.

A tall man dressed in black appeared in front of me. Looking up, I met a dark set of eyes that looked familiar to mine.

A sense of familiarity manifested as I lost myself in this man's eyes, looking for answers.

A soft pat on my back caused me to turn my gaze to the ground.

"Is this her," asked the man. He sounded authoritative and harsh.

"Yes sir," replied the head Madam, her voice quivering.

The atmosphere of the room became apparent the more I processed the situation. Everyone seemed to fear this man I will soon call my father, while others seemed wary of his presence.

"Nice to meet you, Chloe," he spoke, his voice softened, and resentment echoed his words.

"Nice to meet you too, Mr. Barbaro," I replied with a smile.

Today was the day I became Chloe Barbaro, the adopted daughter of the Barbaro family.Exiting the orphanage, a set of men dressed in black survived the area, along with an expensive black car parked in front. Today was the first day I left the orphanage at fifteen. The orphanage had everything we needed, including a small room dedicated to teaching.

Getting in the car, I quietly sat down, looking out the window. The door was quiet, and the ride was long.

As the car stopped, I could see a beautiful white mansion. Like the ones, we could only see on Tv.

I flinched when the door opened suddenly, leaving a beautiful green grass. I cautiously exited the car, scenarios running through my head.

Did they bring me here to become a maid? I questioned myself.

"Let us go," said Mr. Barbaro.

"Yes, sir," I answered, shadowing his steps.

Opening the door, Mr. Barbaro revealed a beautifully decorated home. Staring around, a soft wow exited my mouth, earning a chuckle from the man in front of me.

"This is your home now, Chloe," said Mr. Barbaro. "Linda will show you around the house."

With that my adoptive disappeared without leaving a trace.
