Trial Quest

Dragons, legendary beings. Tales told that they were able to cross continents in a single day and that they could destroy cities by solely breathing. Even the priests of the most largest and powerful religions praised their gods every day to be lucky enough to not encounter one.

One could even be said that the gods feared them.

And now, somehow, Jacob had turned into this creature. He has become a dragon. For the Gods's Sake, he even had a new surname.

He did not know if every dragon was supposed to share the same surname, because… well, it would be uncomfortable at the time of looking for a partner, would it not be?

He noticed that next to the status screen there were two words shining, called "Quests" and "Magic". What surprised him was that after solely feeling interested in the "Magic" word, a new screen appeared in front of his eyes.

[Racial Magic: A dragon can naturally consume mana from their prey, filling up their stomach.]

[Affinity magic: Locked. Host needs to evolve in order to unlock his Magic Power.]

[Domain magic: Locked. Host needs to further evolve in order to unlock his Domain.]

On the Magic screen, he could not see much, as everything aside the racial magic seemed to be locked. There were even a few magics totally blacked out. He guessed that he did not have enough level to see them.

After deciding to check out the last shining word, Jacob willed for the Quest Screen to show.

[The Host has opened the Quest Screen for the first time. The System shall grant Host with a Trial Quest.]

"Wait! No, no, no, no. No more surprises, please! I beg of you!" The white lizard growled.

After the cow-like beast heard his growls, it became so afraid that it immediately ran away, assuming that the lizard was just going to attack it.

[Trial Quest Added. Does the Host wish to give a look at its content now?]

"…"

The System just went ahead and outright ignored him.

'Oh well, I could just take a look at it.' Now that the despicable predator decided to ignore him and go away, he felt safer. Therefore, he wanted to take advantage of the situation to check the Trial Quest's contents.

Based on the System words, it was just a Trial Quest. It would not be hard, or at least this was what he thought.

Finally, he wished for the Quest's content to appear, and a new screen appeared right in front of his eyes.

[Quest's Title: Dragons are made to be devoured]

[Quest's Description: Host has been given the powerful Dragon Devouring System. To make sure the Host is worthy of having the System, the Host must kill and devour a dragon's mana.]

[Current Nearby Baby Dragon Location: In a 20 kilometer radius from the Host.]

[Maximum Duration: One week.]

[The Host will be killed.]

After looking at his initial content, Jacob felt relieved the quest's difficulty was easy and attached the odd title to some internal joke of the system. But after slowly reading its contents, cold sweat began to drip from his forehead.

When he had fully read all the Trial Quest's contents, he felt like crying. Well, to be fair, he was actually crying.

He just passed from hearing legendary dragon tales from bards to be a dragon, and he was even requested to murder another dragon!

"Gods, if you really exist, please stop laughing at me." Jacob prayed on his knees.

After checking the Trial Quest's contents one more time, he closed the Quest Screen and decided to do his utmost to complete the quest. After all, he already died one time and got reborn as a dragon.

He did not want to die again and be reborn as a fly with a System. How would his life be in that case? 'Being reborn as a fly with a Harem System'? It sounded ridiculous, even to him.

'Let me think… The quest's contents mentioned the dragon was in a baby state, just like me. It would not be much stronger than I am, but just in case, I would go and farm some levels.' He thought about it for a while until reaching this conclusion.

Usually, hunting in the wilderness and an unknown area at that was a very dangerous thing to do, but in his past life, he was an adventurer specialized in scouting. Adding that he was now a dragon, Jacob got the confidence to be able to level up efficiently.

"Oh! I will also be checking the baby dragon's location at fixed intervals. It would be useful to figure out his approximated location and to avoid running into him."

One step at a time, he left the glade and slowly stepped into the forest. He was being very careful to not make noise, but he could not help himself.

He was just a newborn. He needed time to get accustomed to his new body.

Probably, the most difficult thing for him was walking on all fours. He could not understand how women could find the dog position comfortable.

Suddenly, Jacob stopped in his tracks, hearing a series of sounds. A constant burble was coming from far ahead, his guessing for it to be a river.

He knew a river meant water, and water was a synonym for a good hunting spot. Even if he did not find any beast drinking, if he followed the river's course, it would not take him much more time to find one.

Crystalline water flowed in the river, letting one see the riverbed. It was not deep, but nevertheless, it had an abundant number of fishes crazily swimming around.

A beast calmly laid beside the riverbank, taking a nap. A pair of horns in its head and its size made it resemble a deer, except that this one had a long tail.

As soon as he saw the creature, he crouched down and crawled to the ground, toward his prey.
