DEATH'S OWN

Born with an unusual birthmark, the shape of a skeleton’s head with rose patterns round about it on her neck, many believed she would only bring bad luck to those around her. This belief was solidified when two of her suitors died unexpectedly right after a visit to her home. Such a thing should come as a bother to any woman but the same could not be said about Nyx. She didn't care if the beliefs about her were true or false. She never liked any of her suitors. Her heart had always been longing for a certain man whom she was very familiar with in her childhood but ceased to appear before her the moment she entered adolescence. Since she knew him one thing was very certain about him, he was not human since he never aged. Not even once. Believing he would one day come again, Nyx was prepared to wait until the day they would meet again. But not everything goes as planned. Having a sickly mother whose only wish was to see her daughter get married and an influential suitor who didn't mind the deaths around her, Nyx soon found herself married off and her mother passed away leaving a father who dreaded her existence and a husband she never loved. **** From a distance he watched her grow, keeping his distance from her, staying within the shadows. As she aged slowly into adulthood, the mark on her neck became more prominent and so was her scent. He wanted her to grow, but when she finally came of age, he thought she would be better without him. But as time wore on and other men began to show interest in her, he could not hold back nor could he let them have her. He discarded those who had an interest in her but one of them slipped through his fingers while he was away and took her. He waited to see if she was happy with her life, with that man, if she was, then he would let her be. She would be able to live a happy life this time unlike the previous one, but everything changed when the forces from the underworld learned of her existence and her connection with him. Her husband was killed which he permitted and her life was in constant danger. Keeping the distance was no longer an option and he once again appeared before her.

A new change

"Can I just say I am sorry?" Beth didn't know what else to say other than to apologize for the past even though there was nothing that she could do to change it. She didn't see any need to want to change it at all because everything worked just fine in the end.

Nyx and Skye were a good match, and they looked… happy. In their own way.

"It is getting late, I think you should return home. It isn't safe to wander about alone after dark," Nyx uttered.

They were currently on a balcony overlooking the street. They could even see some of their neighbours across the street having dinner, some still preparing it, and others already done with it just like they were.

"Nyx…" Betha called but was interrupted.

"You can come back when you are truly sorry for what you did. Buy for now, please leave," Nyx was not going to listen to her when she knew for certain that Beth didn't mean her apology. She didn't see anything wrong with what she did or the fact that she betrayed her friend's trust. An apology from such a person was as good as never being rendered.

"Alright, I will leave. But don't you think your husband deserves to know the truth?" Nyx raised a brow at her words. "That your heaty belongs to another man?"

"He didn't ask me that when he decided to marry me. He never cared, and it is not an obligation that I should tell him anything. He knew I didn't love him, yet he insisted on marrying me. What comes after marriage, he should deal with it," Nyx replied.

Beth gaped at her in disbelief. How could she treat her husband like that? She had thought that after the marriage, Nyx would at least learn to love her husband. It could have been like one of those love after marriage romance, but this was… Nothing like it.

"Leave, Beth. I do not want to see you until you are truly sorry for what you did to me," she still felt betrayed. It was her right to be mad. She deserves at least a sincere apology.

"All of this because of an imaginary lover you had in your childhood and have still refused to grow out of? Nyx, you are only hurting yourself. The fact he hadn't shown himself to you or your family after so long means he does not exist and even if he did, he should be married to someone else by now," Beth said, mad at her friend for still acting like a child in love with some fictional character and thinking he was real.

Nyx ignored her and walked back inside. She held the door that led to the balcony as she waited for Beth to walk through. Seeing her silently asking her to leave, Beth could not believe it. But then she did not say anything and just walked towards it.

"If marrying is that important to you, go get yourself a husband. A shotgun wedding like mine would be perfect for you too," Nyx said just before Beth could walk past her.

Beth stopped when she heard that and looked at Nyx, who returned her gaze. Their eyes stayed locked for almost a minute before Beth silently walked away.

****

Nyx and Skye returned to their home the next morning after making sure that everything was okay and everyone was alright. The rest of the week went on smoothly.

Say would go to work, and so would Nyx, who was preparing to take over the Anders business, although Roger was always there as well.

Two weeks later, things started to change. Skye started having the feeling that someone was watching him. Following him everywhere, it felt so weird and dark that it became uncomfortable in the short run.

He was used to being watched. Having eyes on him was a normal thing for him knowing his status, how many wished to be in his position and how many women wished to wed him or at least bed him if they couldn't get a ring on their finger. But this was on a whole other level.

Even his office didn't feel as safe anymore as each time he felt at least a pair of eyes on him. He wanted to tell someone about it, but who could he tell, and what would that person do to stop it? He would just drag someone innocent into something beyond the natural. He also felt reluctant to tell Nyx about it because he knew she had her own devils to battle with.

As the days went by, he became restless, and that feeling only intensified. It would only diminish when he was home and disappear completely when Nyx was around him. This he had observed during the period of two weeks.

"You look terrible," Nyx stated on one of the evenings they had dinner together. She could see that he was suffering from something, but she didn't know what it was. "Do you want to talk about it?"

Skye put down his silverware and looked at her. Their eyes met for a brief moment before she started eating again. His gaze lingered on her while his mind was thinking, trying to decide whether he should tell her or not.

'It appears I have more issues than I thought,' he said to himself. Nyx seemed to deal with her problems alone even without his knowledge, yet here he was. It was even more frustrating when those around hadn't seen anyone stalking him. He had investigated but still found nothing yet that awful feeling remained.

"Skye," Nyx called.

"Give me some time. If I am unable to resolve it, I will let you know," Skye replied.

"All right," Nyx agreed.

"Would you like to go on a honeymoon?" Skye asked, and Nyx nearly choked on the soup in her mouth. Skye stood up and passed a glass of water to her.

"Thank you," she said after taking a drink.

Right, they were married, and they were yet to go on a honeymoon. Their marriage was yet to be consummated as well.

"As my wife, I owe you this. Let me keep the vows I made," Skye probed. Yes, her heart belonged to someone else but he wanted her too. She was his wife, the least he could do was fulfill his duties as her husband.
