As Alisha trudged along the sidewalk, her mind was preoccupied with her troubles. Her thoughts were so all-consuming that she barely registered the people milling around her.
Suddenly, her phone rang, and she fumbled to retrieve it from her pocket.
When she saw that the caller was an unknown number, a chill ran down her spine. Could it be him? Her heart raced as she hesitated to answer it.
Finally, she mustered the courage to pick up, her trembling voice barely audible. "Hello, who is this?"
A familiar voice spoke on the other end, "Hey, Alisha, it's me, Dan. You know, the guy who sat beside you on your first day?" Recognition dawned on her as she scratched her head, trying to remember the curly-haired guy.
Her voice was weak and unsteady as she replied, "Oh, it's you. What's up?"
