Chapter 26

“Very good,” the doctor said. “I wish all my patients were that smart.”

It took for fucking ever, but finally I was loaded into an ambulance and on my way home. The two burly drivers made short work of carrying the stretcher (and me) upstairs to the master bedroom. They got me settled on the bed, and Rion went back downstairs to see them out. I heard him bounding up the stairs a few minutes later, and when he was in the bedroom, he said, “Finally.”

“Yeah, finally. Can we try the shower now? I feel so grungy.”

“Sure. Let me get undressed so I can help you.”

It wasn’t nearly as difficult as I’d feared it might be, and I sat on the built-in bench for a long time, allowing the water to flow over me. There was a showerhead at each end of the enclosure, and I took full advantage—but not before I shooed Rion out of it—his body blocked the spray.

When we were back to the bedroom, he said, “I’ve had a brain wave.”

“What?”

“Be patient.”
