Chapter 40: Stargazing

Abigail’s POV

We spent our last evening under the stars on a clear night. There was no light pollution to fog our view. We only had the soft glow of fireflies and the moon that illuminated our campsite in silver light.

I had my head on her shoulder. She kept her other arm outstretched to the fire to roast one of our last marshmallows.

"When I was a kid," she said. "I used to connect the stars to make up my own constellations."

"That's so sweet," I said. I nuzzled closer into her.

"And my dad would help me name them," she chewed on the gooey marshmallow.

I was quiet. She was having a blast pretending to be a lumberjack these last few days and caring for me. But when she talked about her childhood, I couldn't help yearning for the fond childhood memories I didn't really have.

I pictured me and Momma on a camping trip. She'd probably complain how she couldn't have a real running shower the entire time and scold me for eating too much sugar in the s'mores we scarfed down.
