"Cadet Kleeve, you had chosen the post in the Conflict response militia in a cosmic convergence zone as your first preference, but you have been assigned to the Armed patrol militia in the cosmic convergence zone. Do you have any objection against your posting?" Lieutenant Dantes asked in a serious and dignified tone.
"No sir!" Regis did not have any preference in the first place. It was just that he was very interested in the Cosmic Convergence zones after reading about it on various sources. He was satisfied with being assigned to the zone. It was a bit of a shame that he would not be in the same division as Alex, but he didn't feel too bad about it. They would be in the same barracks.
"Alright, since you graduated from an official Camp after clearing all the examinations, you will be familiarizing yourself with the post at a rank equivalent to a specialist for one year before being officially promoted to a sergeant major or a second lieutenant depending on your performance in the one year. Are you clear about that?"
Regis affirmed.
"Good then. Wait in the lobby with the other cadets. The personnel from all the barracks will be arriving shortly to bring all the candidates to their stations."
Regis gave a military salute and walked out of the instructor's office. He joined Alex and the other cadets in a nearby lobby.
"Did you get the posting?" Alex asked as soon as Regis appeared in his sight.
"I got the same barracks but a different division." Regis explained Alex about what the instructor told him.
"Hmm! Armed patrol, that is a rather dangerous job. The chances of them engaging in a serious conflict are higher than the Conflict Response forces. Still, it is not a bad post." Regis nodded at Alex's words.
The warp gates of Camp Cerberus lit up in rapid succession and four spacecrafts made their way to the parking area.
"So, this is Camp Cerberus. It seems to be getting a lot of attention and investments recently. What do you think?" A man with short brown hair asked a person who was getting out from another spacecraft.
"That is true, but they did defend against an invasion by two Royal Asceptus while housing only one person at that level." The strict looking man replied.
"I did hear that Major Klesen was a marked talent even in the First general's faction but I didn't expect him to accomplish something like this. I do think that there is something more to the situation than what is shown of the surface, but that's all."
The door of the third spacecraft opened and a person who looked younger than the two conversating walked out from it. The third person did not know who the other two were, but their ranks were higher than him. Taking his eyes away from their uniforms, he saluted them according to the military code. The two people nodded in acknowledgement.
"That just leaves the last spacecraft. I heard that cadets trained at Camp Cerberus usually prefer to get posted in the camp itself. I am here as the representative of the warzone, you are here as the representative of the dispatch and relay personnel and the friend here seems to be from a warzone as well, which division or militia do you think the fourth person may be from?"
"Should either be some militia from the Cosmic Convergence zone or another warzone. Those two are very popular among the cadets in recent years." The strict looking man replied. Just after he had finished speaking, the fourth person stepped out of the spacecraft.
The expressions of the two people changed suddenly. The third person was confused at first, but as soon as the face matched with a name inside his head, his expression also changed to a serious one. All three of them stood taut and saluted the person who stepped out.
Major Cantlon nodded at the three and walked past them. He walked through the entrance of Camp Cerberus unhindered and was led to Major Klesen's office by a Lieutenant. Both him and Klesen belonged to the faction of the First General and were exceptional talents. But, due to the nature of his job, Cantlon was more feared in the military than Klesen who did not get much spotlight.
"I didn't expect them to send you." Klesen looked forward and said to Cantlon who had already taken a seat across his desk.
"It was your report that mentioned that the cadet is a good talent and also has a formidable backing." Cantlon replied while tapping his holowatch. Unlike most soldiers who used their personal watches, Cantlon always used the one issued by the military. A holographic screen emerged from the display of the holowatch.
The image of a teenager with grey hair and red eyes took a corner of he screens while the remaining screen was filled with various texts. This was the biodata of Regis Kleeve that was maintained by the military.
"Yeah, during the three months that he spent in the Camp, he has overtaken many of his peers who started much earlier than him. Also, take a look at this."
A recording played on Klesen's table. It was Regis trying out his spell the other day. There was a slight change in Cantlon's expression after he watched the recording.
"His affinity with the mystical element is very high. Not only is his spell one of the best available in that mystical elements, he even received a powerful skill." Cantlon expressed his honest opinion.
"That is the reason that I had to send the report. He is a talent worth nurturing, but Gaia-Mil's warning that he might be a possible Asceptus spy can't be taken lightly as well. I assume that's the reason why the superiors sent you. If he is confirmed to be a spy, we need to neutralize him as soon as possible and if he isn't, it would be reasonable to take him under the First general's wing. Due to the Kleeve Senatorial family's presence in Camp Cerberus, I have been unable to take actions, but I think that Cosmic Convergence zone may be a good choice to evaluate whether he is a spy or not." Klesen looked at Cantlon and spoke.
"Alright, I understand. What about the other cadets who are allotted to cosmic convergence zone? Is there anyone notable among them?" Cantlon asked.
"According to the instructor, the other two are also very good. Just that they did not receive a special evaluation like 'spy' from Gaia-Mil or the instructor monitoring them. By the way, when will you be leaving with them?"
"Your words feel like you want to drive me out of your office as soon as you can." Cantlon pointed out.
"No, its from Camp Cerberus." Klesen corrected.
Cantlon was not surprised by the blunt reply. Just like him, Klesen had aimed for a post where he could hone his skills faster, but he was posted on Camp Cerberus. Klesen had not objected to the First General's decision. He knew clearly how important his job was, but he still wished for a posting that was not as much of an office job.
Cantlon could not understand the reason for this grumpiness, so he shrugged it off and walked out of the office. The same lieutenant from earlier led him to the lobby where the cadets were waiting. There were only three cadets left in the lobby when they reached there, others had already left.
Seeing that the one who entered the lobby was wearing the uniform of a Major, the three cadets stood up and gave a military salute. Cantlon responded with a nod and gestured the cadets to follow him without any introductions or greetings.
Regis felt that the Major from the Cosmic convergence zone was somewhat eccentric, but he came to terms with it fairly quickly. People could not be only one dimensional when it came to personality. Regis looked towards his side. Alex also turned to look back at him.
'Do you know who that person is?' A message appeared on Regis' holowatch screen. Alex was the sender. The senses of someone who reached the rank of a Major were very sharp, so texting was better than whispering and getting caught. Regis tapped his holowatch.
'No! Do you know him?'
'Major Cantlon. He is a rather famous relative of a friend.'
'Famous?'
'Yeah. He has won many merits in both the warzone and as a member of the Armed Patrol Militia, He will be your superior officer but I don't think that you will come into contact with him often.'
Cantlon was aware of the messages being exchanged. It was a rather common occurrence for him when people switched to conversating using text in his proximity so that he did not overhear their conversation. A weak pulse of mana was released from his body that no one including the lieutenant walking beside him were aware of.
After confirming the content of the conversation through one of his skills, he focussed his attention elsewhere.
