Next day when the math lecturer was almost leaving, I felt someone tap my shoulder from behind where I sat with Dylan. The person passed a folded paper but I didn't open it immediately because the lecturer who's back was turned suddenly faced the class and he started giving his usual sermon on how mathematics was the easiest course when compared to other courses.
As soon as he walked out, half the persons in the lecture hall stood, ready to head out. I looked back to see who it was that handed me the folded paper but the person had stood up and was far, so I just opened it to know what it was.
"Can we talk outside after class?" What I read left me puzzling over who it could be from and my first thought went to Ann but I couldn't be sure, I didn't know her handwriting. I showed it to Dylan after it was just a few left in the hall and we were about to leave.
"Ann?" he asked.
"I think so?" I told him while I stood in front of the hall, waiting for Ann. When she came out, her roommate; Lily was walking with her but she came towards me alone. She waved at Dylan who smiled before walking away for us to talk.
"You wanted to talk to me?" I asked her but she gave me a confused look."Someone passed me your message." I showed her the paper.
"I have your number, If I wanted to talk to you, I'd send you a text, it's not from me."
"It's not from you?" I asked wondering who else it could be from. I didn't have anyone I was friends with, not from this course.
"Hi, Jerry!" I heard an excited voice I could remember but couldn't tell who it belonged to, so I turned around to see who it was. It was the girl from my lodge, it was Jessica. She was wearing a lot of makeup like yesterday, and it still looked beautiful on her.
"Hi." She smiled at Ann who I think returned the smile for courtesy sake.
"So you got the paper I passed to you?" Jessie asked.
"It was you?" I asked her and she nodded.
"I didn't expect you'd come with a friend though." She referred to Ann who looked at me before talking.
"I should be going." She said without waiting further.
"Thank goodness, she left," Jessie voiced out getting my attention back from watching Ann leave."Sooo...uhm, about yesterday, what I said....." She started and I quietly prayed that she would say she was high when she said some of the things she did yesterday.
"I'm listening." I told her so she can continue talking.
"I'm not that kinda girl to ask a guy to have sex with me, especially if it's the first time I'm talking to him," She started, fumbling with her hands and looking down."You see Jerry, you made me do It....I was trying to do something to make you interested, it's why I said that yesterday, I'm not the girl that just fucks with every guy."
"Who ever said you were?" She looked up at me.
"I...I just thought....isn't that why you rejected me yesterday? because you think I fuck just anybody?" She asked and I thought her eyes were starting to get a little teary.
"No?" I shook my head wondering how she thought that was my reason. I just didn't like her but I wasn't going to tell her, she seemed like an overemotional person, I didn't want her to start crying here with all my course mates walking by.
"So I still have a chance with you?" She asked smiling, her eyes resuming an excited state like yesterday while we talked back at my lodge.
"I told you, I like someone else." Her eyes lost it's excitement, her whole face lost it's excitement too and she began to play with her nails, looking down at them.
"Is it her?" She asked looking back at me.
"Who?"
"The girl.... the girl who was just standing here with you before I came, is It her?" I didn't know how to answer her at this point. Yes, it was Ann but I didn't plan to let her know yet, I couldn't just tell her(Jessie), she might go on and tell Ann, she really appeared to me as one of those characters in movies who would do anything crazy to get what they want.
"No, she's a friend."
"Liar."
"Huh?"
"Liar." She repeated."Sure she's just a friend but you like her."
"No," I shook my head,"No, I don't. We are just friends."
"Really?" She rolled her eyes,"I've seen her at our lodge before."
"So?"
"Don't ask me so? She comes around to see you. More than once, I've seen her."
"Yeah, to see me and my roommate, we are all friends."
"I'm not stupid, Jerry." She said and hit my chest.
"Nobody said you were."
"It's her....hear me out...."I wanted to stop her words and deny it but she went on. "I won't lie, she's pretty but just give me a chance, pleaseeee before you start anything with her, come on."
"Jessie...."
"Come on, don't say no again."
"I don't want a relationship right now." It's why I hadn't even made my feelings known to Ann.
"Okay....okay then let's be friends with benefits, huh?"
"Let's just be friends." I told her but she started blinking fast and repeatedly, was she about to cry? Fuck.
"I really like you, don't you see that?" Her voice was shaky."I'll do anything."
"Jessie, don't cry, please don't cry." I got worried when a drop of tear left her left eye.
"I'm trying not to, it's just that you've said no to me twice now and..." She started to sob. O my god. Was she seriously crying right now. I looked around and some people had start to look at us and I panicked and pulled her in and hugged her so she'd stop but regretted that when I saw Ann looking at us both from where she was standing with Dylan.
She looked away when she saw me turn to see her looking at Jessie hugging me. I tried to separate myself from her hug but she hugged me tighter. She wasn't even crying anymore.
