“Great,” Clarke sighed. “First things first, get them contained. There isn’t anything that can be done until that step is complete. I’ll see what arrangements I can make to deal with them on a more permanent basis.”

Todd turned away without further comment and left, Nick on his heels. Neither spoke until they were out of the building and on their horses.

“Todd,” Nick said quietly. “What if they’re not in the prison?”

“Then we’ve lost.” Todd patted the outside of his jacket. The book was snug in the inside pocket. “But no one else ever sees this book.”Chapter 10

Nick’s gaze slid to the side, watching Todd. They’d gone from the chancellor’s office to check the prison and formulate a plan to get inside.

Without looking away from the prison, Todd said, “Chancellor Clarke was lying.” They were crouched in an alley across the street from the prison.

“Not about everything,” Nick said.
