Lunch with Jane

Her house was not very big, the kitchen was just a small hallway away from Abbie's bedroom, when we got there a women in her early 40's with blond hair and light blue eyes greeted me with a warm smile, in my head I thought 'she looks just like my mom'. I reluctantly said "Hello ma'am, my name is Jake, it's nice to meet you.", she let out a slight giggle before replying "You don't have to be so formal sweet heart, my name is Jane, please, make yourself at home.". She then gestured over to the dining room table which was round with three chairs.

Abbie and myself had a seat at the small cafe style table, we waited for Jane to dish up the food, I still could not get the resemblance out of my head, she even had similar mannerisms that my mom used to have. Abbie snapped me out of my reminiscent daze by asking "You okay over there rat-boy?", I hesitated before replying "Yeah... just, thinking about something."

She looked at me with a raised brow, she knew something was up, but decided not to pry. She waited for a moment before turning to her mom to ask "Hey mom, is the food almost ready?" as she asked, her mother walked toward us with a plate of sandwiches and a small assortment of cheeses. "Here is is guys," she glanced over at me before saying "dig in.".

I ate almost all of the sandwiches on the plate as regeneration can make you pretty hungry, Abbie only had half of hers because she already had her one from when I woke up in the bedroom. As I was finishing the bite of my last sandwich, Abbie's mom asked "So Jake, where are your parents?" I nearly choked on my food, Abbie turned to Jane and said "Mom!" her mother argued "What? I'm just concerned that the poor boys parents don't know where he is!".

I finished coughing and assured Abbie "It's fine, it's fine don't worry," I then answered Jane's question "My family are away on holiday and I couldn't leave because of school so I stayed to look after the house." I lied, I couldn't make Abbie nor her mom concerned about me, especially since we should be worried about the universe right now.

I continued "I told them I'd be going out today and when I started feeling ill I messaged them to say I'd be coming here for a little while, so theres no need to worry really!" as I was finishing up my explanation, I got interrupted by a giant tremor followed by explosions and screaming, I rushed to my feet and said to Abbie and her mom "Stay here! I'm going to check whatever that is out!"

Abbie's mom protested "No my boy, it's too dangerous you don't know what it could be!", but before I heard the rest of her argument, I left through the front door.
