Can You Trust Me?

"Urgghhh…" Francis suddenly fell on his knees and vomiting blood. His face turned really pale and he look so weak. I, who had just entered his office, hurriedly took a handkerchief and approached him. "What happened? This is not your first time vomiting blood!" I asked, pretending to panic. I knew the reason why he was in this state, it was because I poisoned him. "Cough… cough…" he coughed as he was vomiting blood. "I'm fine. As you said this is not my first time vomiting blood so I can handle it." He said after he stopped vomiting blood. "But I guess you have to stop pretending." He paused and moved his body closer to me. "Charlize," he whispered right to my ears. He still looked so weak due to the poison but he seemed like already used to it. "I know it is you who make me in this state." ------------- Hi everyone!!!  Thank you for supporting me this far, and sorry for not continuing this work. Somehow I lost my pace and mood regarding this work, so I just can't continue. New Year Party (Francis POV)

The year had ended and as usual, there was a party to celebrate the new year. Honestly speaking, I never like this kind of party. Those nobles would only gossip and talk about me.

But sadly, I couldn' avoid the party. Since it's much better if I attended even for just standing at the corner than not at all. Bad rumors would spread and my reputation would become worse.

Besides, I got seventy for this year's evaluation. This was my time to start showing myself to social life and gain more power. Even though people thought that I was cheating, since there wasn't any proof then everything would be okay. I was willing to endure everything in order to survive. This is how you live at the palace after all.

"Noah, you ready?" I took a glance at Noah. He wore his formal uniform that night, the sight that you would see only several times in a year.

"Yes. I'm ready, your highness."

We then walked to the party hall. There were lots of nobles wearing fancy dresses and suits that I was sure were high quality. Really the opposite with what I wore that time. I only wear the suit I wore two years ago.

Once I entered the room, I could hear murmuring sounds from everywhere. "That prince still came to this party? How can he show up here?" "For a mixed blood like him, even though he is royal, how can he walk in here?" "I heard that he was cheating on this year's evaluation." "Oh my gosh. So that's the reason why his score increased so much?"

I could hear everything they said. To be precise, I was sure they talked with such a high voice to make me hear them. 'Endure it, endure it, endure it.' I tried my best to ignore everyone like I used to do and took a seat at the corner.

Suddenly, those nobles started another ruckus. I followed their eyes and found Duke Ashford and his family coming in. Beside Rowan Ashford, there was Olivia, holding his hand like a couple.

"As usual, the Ashford family are so gorgeous." "This is the first time I saw Lady Whitley with Sir Rowan." "They just got engaged, right?" "They really look good together aren't they?"

So they really were a couple. This kind of party was a perfect place to announce it anyway. But somehow, I felt like I couldn't accept their engagement. I really was weird, was I? Olivia had nothing to do with me, she was just a daughter from a family who opposed me.

People started to gather around Olivia and talked with her. Was she always surrounded by these people? I never paid attention to this kind of thing before. But that time, I watched Olivia.

"Lady Whitley, congratulations for your engagement!" "Congratulations, Lady Whitley." "I wish for your happiness!!!" Seems like they tried to get on her good side. Well, everyone would do that in order to get more connection and support.

"Lady Whitley, can I ask you something?" A lady that was one of the people that surrounded Olivia asked her. Once Olivia nodded, the lady continued. "The empress is from the Ashford family and you are engaged to Sir Rowan. But why do you become Prince Francis' study partner instead of His Highness Prince Roosevelt's?"

People around them silenced for a moment then started murmuring. Olivia, who was asked, just stayed calm and smiled. "The empress worried about His Highness Prince Francis, so she asked me if I could help him. Then we start to become study partners for each other."

Some nobles didn't seem to believe Olivia's answer. Olivia and I were from a different side, so it was almost impossible for us to be together even only as study partners.

'Tak tak' A stomping voice came from the guard. "Attention!!!" Everyone's attention focused at the podium. "His majesty the emperor and her highness the empress are entering the room!!!"

The emperor and the empress, Rosaline entered the room. Everyone bowed their heads, including me and Noah.

Once the emperor raised his hand everyone raised their heads and the party began. Everyone enjoyed their time with their family, friends, love, anyone. At times like this, I prefered to leave the hall and go to the garden. Being alone there with Noah and Charlize was such a good time for me during the party.

"Greetings, your highness." A girl's voice greets me. She was Charlize. As usual she wore a robe, a hood and her face covered with a fabric.

"You finally come, Charlize. It's been a while since the last time we met." I smiled at her and taped the spot beside me. "Take a seat."

She sat beside me. "I heard you got seventy for the annual evaluation. Congratulations."

"Thank you. As you said, I have to start getting a high score for the evaluation. But still, I answered some questions wrong on purpose. I wonder if I answered everything correctly."

Charlize let out a small laugh, trying to comfort me. "Everyone will be surprised of course. So it would be better if you can take it slow."

She was right. I only got seventy and everyone created a ruckus already and even started a rumor that I was cheating. What would happen if I got a perfect score, beating Roosevelt's score?

"Here, eat some cookies. I took them from the hall." Charlize offered me some cookies.

"By the way, Charlize." I started another conversation while eating those cookies. "One day, I found Roosevelt and Rowan taking out steel stones somewhere. I don't know what they're going to do, but I guess they want to trade with it?"

Charlize was silenced for a while. "No way, don't tell me-" She paused a bit. She looked shocked at that time. "No. Francis. I guess I know what happened."

I raised my eyebrows as a sign for her to explain. "Several weeks ago, I saw Sir Rowan unload some stuff. I wasn't sure what those things are, but they looked like steel stones. And it looks like Sir Rowan was in charge of some new trade."

"Is that so? They are brave enough to do such a thing."

Suddenly, I felt my body was not in a good condition. I felt like something choked me, blocked my lungs to get more air. Charlize, she poisoned me again this time. I wanted to ask her, but somehow I lost my will for it. Maybe I wasn't ready to know the truth even though I was desperate to know.

"And Francis. You know, the Ashford family started to use some new drugs for their experiment." Charlize told me another thing. "I can't tell where those drugs come from and this is the first time I see those types of drugs."

"They use other drugs? For poison?" Charlize nodded. "I wonder what they want to do now."

That night, we ended up enjoying the night view. I couldn't ask Charlize more about the Ashford family. There's a limit to what she could know about that family even though she worked for them. I wanted to ask about why she was poisoning me, but I was afraid to know the truth.

"The party is almost over. I shall go back to make sure no one notices us." Charlize bowed slightly to me then left me alone.

"You don't ask about the poison, your highness?" Noah asked me when Charlize was completely gone.

I sighed, with my hand massaging my front head. "I don't have any courage to ask her. Somehow I felt like I couldn't ask. And you know, those cookies are poisoned."

Noah's eyes widened. "Are you okay?"

"No need to create a ruckus, Noah. I'm fine."

'Krsk…. krsk...' A rustle voice came from bushes behind me, not too far from where I sat.

Did someone watch me? Who was that? Since when was he there?
