Chapter Fifteen

"Mabuhay! She handed her passport and waited for it to be scanned and stamped.

She glanced at her watch, it's already 6 in the evening at hindi pa rin siya nakakalabas ng paliparan.

"Here you go, ma'am" nakangiting inilapag ng lalaki ang maleta sa kanyang harapan. He must be at least 5'10", mestizuhin ito, matangos ang ilong at bahagyang may pagka singkit ang mga mata.

"Thanks" tipid niyang sagot at nginitian ito.

"Do you only have one?" tanong ulit nito "I can take your other bags if you have more"

"There it is!" she pointed at her other luggage na papalapit.

The man effortlessly pulled it out of the conveyor belt for her.

"Thanks a lot!" she exclaimed.

"Oh it's nothing!" sagot nito, flashing perfectly white teeth. Lumabas ang magkabilang biloy nito sa magkabilang pisngi when he smiled "oh, I'm Kurt by the way".

"Louise...?" he squinted his eyes a little bit, hinihintay na sabihin niya ang kanyang apelyido.

"Saavedra. Louise Saavedra"

"Pleasure meeting you, Louise" he firmly shook her hand.

"Likewise" she answered smiling at marahang binawi ang kamay mula rito "I'll go ahead. Andiyan na rin siguro ang sundo ko. It was nice meeting you" she said and started to walk away.

"Hope to see you around!" he answered back waving at her.

It was close to midnight nang marating nila ang hacienda. Louise inhaled deeply nang makababa ng sasakyan, her eyes surveyed the surroundings.

Malaki ang ipinagbago nito. Their lawn that used to be always manicured ay tila napabayaan. Even the palm trees look depressed.

She sighed. What happened to this place magmula nang umalis siya? She turned her eyes to look at the building in front of her. At least the mansion looked how she remembered it, mukhang ito ang isa sa mga bagay sa haciendang naalagaan. Her dad adored and loved this place, especially the mansion. Dito na ito ipinanganak, nagkaisip at lumaki.

"Louise, hija!" She turned around to see her yaya Adela standing at the house's entrance.

"Yaya!" She exclaimed, patakbo siyang lumapit dito at niyakap ito nang mahigpit. She missed her yaya so much.

Hinalikan niya ito sa pisngi "i've missed you yaya" malambing niyang sabi.

Hindi man niya gustong aminin, she missed this place. The house looks exactly how she remembered it. Naroon pa rin ang malaking chandelier na makikita pag pasok mo, right above the round welcome table na napapaibabawan lagi ng isang vase ng sariwang mga bulaklak. Her mom's huge portrait still hangs on one of the walls. As always, the marbled floor was sparkly and shiny, pwede kang manalamin. She gave a bittersweet smile. Anim na taon, it actually felt like a lifetime.

She's feeling anxious now that she's back in Sta. Martha, the one place she swore she didn't want to go back to. Ngunit gaano man kasakit ang mga ala ala ng lugar na ito sa kanya, hindi niya maaaring pabayaan ang ama, and right now, his dad is fighting for his life and he needs her.

She's never seen her dad look so helpless like this. The mighty Enrique Saavedra, now looks like a fragile old man lying there, sari saring tubo ang nakakabit dito.

She tried holding his hand. "Dad..." usal niya trying to fight back the tears. Hindi niya alam kung naririnig siya nito but she wants him to know na nandito siya. Na bumalik siya para rito.

"It's Louise dad. I'm here...I'm here for you... please get better. You can do this. I know you can" naramdaman ni Louise na tila gumalaw ang daliri nito. Nabuhayan siya ng loob. That means he can hear her. "I'll be here dad, hindi kita iiwan kaya magpagaling ka agad ha" she assured him bago lumabas ng silid ng ama.

"Is everything okay yaya?" He must be in his 50's and he looked dignified. Adela gave her a weary look.

"Are you Ms. Louise Saavedra? Daughter of Enrique Saavedra?" The man inquired.

"Yes, ako nga. What can I help you with?"

"I'm Atty.

"What can I help you with, Mr. Santos?"

The attorney looked unsure for a second and then pulled out a brown envelope from his bag at iniabot iyon sa kanya. She hesitantly accepted. She looked at the man, waiting for an explanation. Still puzzled, she slowly opened it and pulled out the papers.

Bumulaga sa kanya ang heading na nakasulat doon, in bold letters: NOTICE TO VACATE PROPERTY. She frantically read through the document ngunit walang masyadong rumerehistro sa kanyang utak maliban sa nakasaad ditong binibigyan sila ng isang buwan para bakantehin ang mansyon at hacienda!
