Chapter 93: Jared

My fingers relax on the steering wheel.

"Oh my God. It was," Layla declares. "How could you?"

"Very easily, actually," I mumble and regret it as Layla turns in her seat, only to have the seat belt restrict her.

"Calm down," I say, not wanting her to hurt herself.

"I can’t believe you could do such a thing."

"You're in shock and have had a tough day—"

Layla cuts off my words. "No, Jared. What you did to those boys is wrong. That’s all they had. They can’t afford to educate themselves." Disgust is evident in Layla’s words.

I slow down as we reach the gates to my home. They open slowly.

"I promised Evelyn I’d ring her when I get back to your house to let her know I’m safe," Layla explains as she takes her phone out of her bag.

"I’ll have Lucas and Sam reinstated," I say while I put the car into gear and drive up toward the house.

"Promise me." Layla’s voice is soft.

I pull into the garage and turn off the engine before facing Layla. "I promise you."
