Chapter 31: Layla

When I get home, Evelyn is gone. There’s a buzz in my head while I shower. So much stuff flows around, and it’s hard to concentrate on just one thing. I keep wanting to check my phone, keep waiting for Jared to text. I miss him. I think I’m starting to become immune to the chaos he causes to my emotions.

What is wrong with me?

I spend the time grabbing food and flicking through the TV channels before I have to leave for Ashley’s.

The area in which Ashley lives is one you wouldn’t walk through at night. I’ve never been there, but I have heard about it. But people can be vicious with words, and rumors are rumors for a reason. Yeah, maybe it isn’t as bad as I think.

My black leggings still have that soft, fluffy feeling that I know will soon be gone. But right now, they make me feel warm and cozy. Throwing on an oversized army green sweater and slipping into my white tennis shoes, I run my fingers through my hair. I’m kind of lucky like that; my fingers are as effective as a brush.
