Chapter 29: Jared

"How do you know where I live?" she asks.

I spot the girl who she called Ashley lingering along the wall. She gawks at us, but Layla seems oblivious to everyone, even me. Her head is down as she walks, and I want to reach out and take her hand. She should walk with her head held high. She’s worth a thousand Ashleys. I bury my hands in my jacket pockets as we walk toward the school. I open the door and let Layla go in first. "I know lots of things."

She doesn’t step through immediately. "Like my phone number."

I grin. "Like your phone number."

She huffs and steps inside the school. Her nose scrunches up, and I want to kiss it, but everyone is f*cking watching us—until they meet my eye and look away. Alex isn’t here today, and it’s working to my advantage. I can walk freely with Layla without any consequences for one day.

Layla waits outside the cafeteria. I have to issue a warning to her not to leave. When I return with two coffees, she’s still standing where I left her.
