Chapter 24

Stacy was back to her old job, stacking supermarket shelves. Lately, it seemed like she was crazy because she was having a hard time remembering what had happened the few days after Kale broke up with her. It seemed strange, like those days never occurred at all, but they did.

It was more like this for her; Friday night, she went on a date with her boyfriend, a date which ended up in sadness for her because Kale dumped her that night, she ran out of the restaurant immediately, you know of the rest of the story, and then suddenly she wakes up; it's already the next Thursday. Her mind is still like a blank page whenever she tries to think about whatever happened during that interval.

It seems like a lot happened, because when when she'd wanted to resume work that day, her manager surprisingly told her that she'd come here herself to quit a few days ago. She didn't know if it was the Stacy standing in front of him he was referring to or someone else, but when she'd tried arguing with him that she never came to quit her job, she seemed crazy, so she just left it, especially when she'd seen the difference in dates. Her manager might have been right.

Luckily for her, no one else had come to take her job since that time she left, so she could have it back either way. It's been a week since that strange Thursday though, and Stacy is still figuring out what happened to her during those days.

The first thing she remembered when she'd woken up was the break up. It brought a sense of gloominess to her mood, but asides that, she had this feeling in her heart that didn't make her think much about the hurt she felt, or rather, she was supposed to feel. It was like she'd experienced something different, something she had either never experienced, or something she hadn't done so in a long time. It was a good feeling, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't bring herself to remember what it was.

Was it that she'd slept all through those five days?

As she'd finished attended to a customer who came in, her mind went back to the break-up, trying for the millionth time to see if her memory could pick up something from there.

Stacy thought about the way she'd left the restaurant, also about the way everything went with Kale. Maybe she had over reacted. It was just a break-up after all, she didn't even ask him the reason why he wanted to separate before she ran out like that. She'd ran into some random taxi and sadly, she couldn't remember where she went afterwards.

"Maybe I should go to see Kale, maybe I should go to his house," Stacy thought to herself, and she decided that she would, as not only did she believe that there might still be a chance to rekindle their relationship, but she probably thought that seeing him after that night passed might jog her memory a little bit. Besides, she'd missed Kale for a while now and felt they needed to talk about everything that had happened.

After her shift, she decided to go over to his place, as he should have been back from work by now. She remembered how they used to spend the evenings together the previous years. The time they spent with each other reduced gradually till it got to the point where they hardly saw each other, except by communicating through phone calls.

Thinking about all these factors, she might understand why he wanted a breakup though, as maybe he wasn't feeling his girlfriend anymore like he used to. That's the reason why she decided to go there and that's why she felt their need to talk. They shouldn't just end things that way.

She really doesn't know what happened to this memory of hers and why she can't remember much after the breakup. The only thing she knew was that she hadn't seen Kale since after that time, according to what Bet told her. She'd met with Bet about two days ago and just like her manager, Bet also thought she was crazy when she saw how absentminded Stacy appeared about what happened after that night. When Stacy didn't remember that she'd told Bet about the breakup before, Bet wondered if she suffered memory loss as a result of her emotional state.

What surprised Bet was that Stacy had seemed fine when she came to her house the other day, the breakup didn't seem to have done much damage to her emotionally, so why did the memory loss come so late?

"What is wrong with me, and where did my mind go those five days?" She kept asking herself as she made her way to Kale's house.

Within less than an hour, she'd reached his place. The lights inside were turned on, so he would be in there for sure. They would have a lot of time to talk, they needed to, as during their relationship, they'd failed to have one of those long talks for a very long time. Stacy blamed herself for this, as she'd been more focused on working herself to death while the personal aspects of her life suffered.

Upon climbing his porch, she gave a small knock on the door and waited for a bit. Apart from small music playing in the background, she could hear voices from inside, it didn't seem like the voice of just one person. It didn't seem like Kale was in there alone.

Soon after, the music reduced and the door opened. Just as Stacy thought; Kale wasn't by himself. It was someone else who came to open the door. A pregnant blonde lady who looked a bit older than her. Stacy wondered who she was.

"Hello," she greeted her. "I came here to see Kale. Is he around?"

The lady only tossed her greeting aside and passed her a nasty glare. "Is something wrong with you? I told you that Kale no longer has any interest in you. How can you come to see him at such a late hour?"

Stacy stared at her confusingly. What in heaven's name was this lady talking about?
