Prologue

The freezing wind stings my cheeks as I run through the thick forest behind what used to be my home. I had lived in a nice two-story house with what I thought was my birth parents. But I guess I was clearly wrong. Two days prior my parents had informed me that when I was a baby someone had left me on their door steps. They had just found out that they were no longer able to have kids, due to complications with their son's birth, that they happily adopted me.

Angry and confused, I ran to the only person I could. My brother, Ryan, who just so happened to live deeper in town. After he had calmed me down and convinced me to return a couple days later, he had left for his college classes. The entire way back home, after the weekend at Ryan's, I had worked on my apology. But it was a failed attempt. Because nothing could have prepared me for the worst day of my life.

Walking into my house, I had an instant bad feeling. The usual bright energy that the house normally gave off was gone. The end table that would normally hold our letters and keys by the door was knocked over. It looked like a tornado had gone through our house. Everything was either knocked over or thrown across the house. The 36 inch flat screen TV that was mounted above our fireplace was now barely hanging on to the mount by the wires attached to it. The blue picture on the screen revealed the spider web looking breaks in the glass.

I searched the entire house for my parents, screaming for them. But there was no answer, just deafening silence. Coming up to my room, the sickening feeling that had slowly began churning in my stomach suddenly hit me like a ton of bricks. Death was in the air and I could smell the sickening scent coming from a crack in the door. I wasn't even sure if I wanted to open the door, but my need for the truth outweighed my fear. While swallowing the lump in my throat, I pushed on the door.

Sunlight poured into the room, glistening off the blood that covered the floor. I froze in horror as my eyes landed on my parents lying in a pool of blood in the middle of my floor. Tears filled my eyes as a heartbreaking scream erupts from my lungs. Falling on my knees, I crawled towards them as the tears fell freely down my cheeks. I grabbed Papa's hand out of shock and pulled it to my chest.

Fear gripped me further as my eyes land on the floor where his hand had lain. RUN was written in blood. Quickly, I grabbed my mother's necklace before making my way back downstairs. I turned right at the bottom of the stairs towards the front door only to be frozen in my tracks. A big black figure was leaning against the door. Blood red eyes glared at me from the shadow causing my breathing to become erratic.

Stepping into the light, the figure revealed a handsome looking middle-aged man. His blood red eyes stalked me like a hunter would prey. Smirking slightly, he showed off his elongated canine teeth which stood out around his blood stained mouth. Quickly, I bolt for the patio door - though I do have to admit that it was another failed attempt. He grabbed my neck from behind and threw me into the fridge to the left of him.

Pain erupted in my head as it made contact with the handle. Sitting up dazed, I watched the man walk towards me with a victorious smile. Closing my eyes and putting my hands up, I waited for the end. Crashing caused me to open my eyes in shock. The man was no longer in front of me. Standing up, I see him lying on the floor in a pile of wood that used to be our dinner table.

Not wasting any time, I stumbled to the patio door. Leading me here, running for my life away from a monster hell bent on killing me. I'm afraid that I can't stay here or go to my brother's, that monster will just kill him too. So I have to run, just like Papa told me to do.
