Chapter 12

Awerkok POV:

Awerkok sighed and closed the file that he had been reading for the past hour. His gaze fell upon his reflection in the shiny black mirror that rested against his desk and noticed how tired and pale his face was. Awerkok was usually very good at concealing his emotions, but recently, he had started to feel uneasy and uneasy and it wasn't helped at all by the fact that he was going to have to confront his mother the next day. Ever since he'd seen her with that man, he'd felt so angry that he couldn't sleep most nights and whenever he tried to sleep, his dreams would be filled with images of his mother and the man and he'd wake up screaming; which caused all of the neighbours to complain loudly about their noise. He didn't know exactly what the dream was about, but from time to time he'd awaken gasping from a nightmare, covered in sweat and trembling. But he hadn't woken up crying yet, though it seemed that the nightmares weren't going away anytime soon.

Awerkok rubbed the bridge of his nose as he considered all of the options he had. He knew that his mother didn't deserve to go through what he had, but she deserved to know that her daughter, the daughter whom she had raised for years and had believed she loved unconditionally, was actually just a cruel little brat who had deceived her and betrayed her trust. It wouldn't be fair if she didn't get to know the whole truth about him, and she needed to know sooner rather than later. She was the best parent any child could wish for, after all. So why hadn't he told her before? Why hadn't he let her see that he was different from other kids? Now she was suffering because of him. It was his fault. And although he was scared and frightened, he wasn't stupid either. He knew that the consequences of what he planned to do would affect his future, and he was prepared for it. But it was going to be harder to tell her than he'd imagined.

He was brought out of his thoughts by the ringing of his cellphone, which signalled him to get a message. Looking towards the phone, he saw the screen display 'Unknown Number'. Curious, he accepted the call and pressed the answer button.

"Who am I speaking to, please?" He asked politely.

There was a brief pause before the reply was finally delivered.

"Hello Mr. Awerkok... This is Doctor Denton calling from the emergency ward... My husband was killed earlier this evening, while fighting a monster in the streets..." The man's voice was low and full of sadness as he continued. "My wife has been badly injured, but fortunately, she survived... Thank goodness... Her condition has stabilised now and we have set her free. I'm sorry to inform you that she did not make it..." The doctor finished sadly.

For a moment, Awerkok didn't seem to know what to say. Then, after composing himself, he spoke.

"Do not worry sir; I'm sure your wife will recover" He replied simply.

After saying goodbye to the doctor, he sat back in his seat and sighed heavily as he began to think over the conversation once more. He wasn't exactly surprised that his father died. After seeing all of the damage that he had done throughout the years, he couldn't even pretend to think otherwise. In hindsight, maybe he shouldn't have been such an arrogant prick back then. Maybe if he had behaved differently his parents would have remained together, and their relationship wouldn't have turned out so bad. But unfortunately, those were wishful thoughts. No matter how much he wished for something, that was never going to happen.

As he stared at the wall in front of him for what must have been minutes, he suddenly felt his phone vibrating. Taking it out, he saw that it was D.J. texting him.

D.J.: Hey Dad! Sorry I've just finished eating and I'm now heading to bed :)
