The redheaded instructor led them into the field before asking them to stand in a straight line. The fifty-odd students listened to her, but as the line grew long, they were unable to keep themselves fully aligned.
"Stand equidistant, or it might be troublesome to calculate," she said, holding a notebook. "Now, you all will go through some simple probing and testing to receive your ranking. Remember, this is merely a provisional ranking. Your potential, talent, or special ability are not taken into account all that much.
"There will be several tests throughout the semester to determine your true ranking. But you can be certain that the provisional ranking will be close to what you're worth. Only one or two deviants appear every year. We'll see if there are any among you."
