While waiting for Christopher, Rose sat in his study. Over the next few hours, she could hear many noises through the office door. These included the banging and clanging of pots in the kitchen, the opening and closing of cupboards, water running, and the deep voices of men talking.
There was another thing. Rose could taste the metallic tang of iron and smell salt in the air. It was the unmistakable scent of blood and lots of it. Knowing this only heightened her anxiety. She promised to stay in the study, but not knowing what was happening overwhelmed her.
