Clearly, she was. And she had Nick in a corner. 6

“I’m surprised I managed to get you in a corner.” She sniggered. “For a squaddie, you’re not very vigilant. I was behind you practically the whole time.”

Kathy whimpered. Nick pushed her behind him.

“Captain Llanos, what are you doing?”

“Doing what the cops should’ve done. Put you where you deserve.”

She wanted him locked away. That much Nick knew. Gemma didn’t keep it a secret. But to kidnap Kathy to get to him? That was just cold. Gemma had gone off the deep end.

Then Nick remembered. He was wired. Daniel and Jamie would be able to hear everything. He just needed Gemma to say it out loud.

“I don’t get it.”

Gemma arched an eyebrow. She folded her arms, her gun held in plain sight, and sneered at him.

“Typical squaddie. So stupid. You came here without backup and you don’t know why?”

“I managed to find Kathy, didn’t I?”
