Jameson Rook, dressed all in black, glided smoothly over the streets of Manhattan, easily keeping up with the love of his life, NYPD Detective Nikki Heat, as she tracked a ruthless killer through the streets of New York, many floors below.
"Castle, if Rook is jumping from roof to roof, how is he going to cross major streets? He's not Spiderman, you know."
Rick Castle looked up at his fiancé. "He's a ninja. He learned the ancient art while in Japan."
"Ninja's are still subject to the laws of physics. Suppose he has to jump from the roof of a twelve story building to the roof of a five story building? He'll be lucky not to end up in a wheelchair."
Castle deleted what he had written and wrote again.

Rook's super-sensitive nose caught the odor of gun oil, just a few blocks away. Moving faster than the speed of light…."
"Faster than the speed of light? You do know that, according to Einstein, as an object's speed approaches the speed of light, its mass approaches infinity? In other words, Rook would become as big as your ego."
He nodded. "Okay, that can be changed."

Rook's super-sensitive nose caught the odor of gun oil, just a few blocks away. Nikki was walking into an ambush!
"Rook can tell the difference between gun oil and all the other tons and tons of petroleum based products in Manhattan? And how does he know it's an ambush? It could be another cop up ahead."
Castle looked up at Kate and deleted what he'd written. He started over.

Rook's eyes' caught movement a short block away. In the light of a passing car, Rook recognized the face of Schlemming, the short, obese, odiferous, infertile, intellectually challenged detective who had once asked Nikki out. What was Schlemming doing here?
"I don't complain about Meredith and the great crazy sex you had with her, or Gina, who you took to the Hamptons instead of me. I never mention Jacinda, the stewardess, so why do you keep bringing up Demming?"
"It's not Demming. It's Schlemming, a different person entirely. I use him for comic relief." Castle said defensively. "And you just did mention them."
Kate shrugged. "I did just because you brought up Demming. And I know that Schlemming is really Demming, so don't try to deny it."

Rook's eyes' caught movement a short block away. In the light of a passing car, Rook saw a suspicious looking individual. He recognized her at once as Deep Fried Twinkie, the infamous ninja assassin.
"A ninja named Deep Fried Twinkie?" Kate giggled.
"It's reverse psychology. DFT thinks people will underestimate her by using that name."
"It's not the name that causes people to have a low opinion of Meredith. It's Meredith."
"I was just trying to balance the Schlemming with the DFT." Castle replied.
"Try again."

"Castle, you work with the homicide squad. You know better than that. And Rook would know better. Rook is unarmed and Nikki is unaware that someone is lurking in an alley ahead of her. Now, what should Rook do?"

Nikki nodded. "Okay, stay in the car, I'll go through the door first, I'll drive, don't wear that vest, stay out of my way and if you call me your muse again, I'll break both of your arms."
"Better?" Castle asked, smiling.
Kate shook her head. "Now you're just being silly. That is not how Nikki would handle the situation. She's a trained detective and besides, she's Rook's fiancé. She'd never treat him that way. Care to try again?"

Jameson Rook, driving an all-black MI Abrams tank through the streets of Manhattan, roared past the love of his life, the gorgeous, brainy and courageous Detective Nikki Heat. Using the sophisticated night vision devices of the tank, Rook saw something ahead. He didn't know who or what it was, and frankly, my dear, he didn't give a damn. Loading a high explosive 120 mm round into the tank's main gun, he fired, obliterating a twelve or possibly a five story building. The building began to burn as it was filled with gun oil or some sort of other inflammable petroleum products, of which there were tons and tons in Manhattan. The red of the flames reminded him of his former wife, whose name he had completely forgotten, who could not in any way compare to the incomparable Nikki Heat. In the light of the flames, Rook could see Detective Schlemming who was subduing twelve ninjas who were attempting to steal a little girl's lunch money and her kitten.
"Need help, Schlemming?" Rook called from the tank's turret.
"No, there are only a dozen of them. Nothing I can't handle. You and Nikki should go handle something important. Defeat the Islamic State or end global warming. Something worthy of your talents."
Rook quickly reversed and stopped in front of Nikki. "Need a ride, love of my life, woman that I will marry and the finest detective in all creation?"
"Thanks, Rook."
Kate nodded. "That tells me all I need to know about what you've learned following me around for all those years."
"Think you can do better?" Castle smiled and handed her the laptop.

Nikki Heat and Jameson Rook, partners in crime solving, as in life, walked together through the streets of Manhattan, tracking a ruthless killer.
"I'm glad you're with me, Rook. I've been alone for far too long."
Rook nodded at the love of his life. "Always, Nikki."
They smiled at each other and continued on their quest for justice. Together.
"And that tells me all I need to know about what you've learned from me following you around all those years." Castle waited just a second before adding, "It's brilliant. You may have to start writing a detective series of your own."
"About a ninja detective?"
Castle shook his head. "Don't you know there are no such things as ninjas?"
Author's note: If any of you have ever wondered what writing a story is like…..It's nothing like this.
