February 9th, 1873, Thorndon, Wellington. 2100 Hours.
The tall spire of Saint Paul's Cathedral dominated nearby buildings. The unusual wooden cathedral, of Gothic design, was the Bishop of Wellington's pride and joy, as was the cathedral's choir. Tonight, the choirmaster of Saint Paul's was holding auditions to fill recently vacated positions. Because the local community held the choir in the highest regard, any openings were hotly contested, and the choirmaster took great delight in pitting vocal talents against each other to find the most suitable. The auditions had just concluded and everyone was leaving. The choirmaster would discuss his final selection with the organist prior to making the announcement during Sunday's Evensong service.
