She was now tired of staring at the lights of the city. She didn't want to get any angry than she had been. She's angry yes but she never wanted to take out the anger on the wrong people, she understood that there were both good-hearted and bad humans, if she was to take revenge on just anyone then she would have drowned more than thousands of men. The beautiful mermaid possessed the singing power of the sirens, she knew she could easily drown men by luring them with the beautiful songs that carry your senses, ready to follow them but that's not what she wanted. No matter how much anger she had, her heart was still warm, she lived in the cold but her heart wasn't cold, and her parents taught her better. This was just like a storm and she knew that she would not be able to calm it but she knew how to calm herself and swim.
She swam down deep to the underwater library. It was at night but the reflection of the full moon on the sea hit the deep too in such a way that it was still like daytime. She needed to read a few things or maybe a story, a bedtime one before she returns to her mermaid poach. She was busy reading a book, not a fancy one but she read because the stories gave her knowledge, when some books fell behind her and she turned to look back. It was a young merman in his early tens.
" I'm sorry ...." The mermen said picking up the books and returning them to where they were stuffed beautifully. She was surprised because, for one, she didn't think that the mermencoukd speak English.
She looked at him and smiled, the little merman looked a little scared.
" It's fine... it's good to see someone else here too" she said looking at him with eyes that showed happiness. " you can speak English too...and it's amazing," she said again smiling. Who knows if her parents were still alive maybe she would have a little brother or sister.
The little mermen came closer to her. " I only know it because of you, I've always been following you everywhere, I know everything you like, what you like eating, and where you spend most of your time... I read your mind to understand English, and right now I know what you are planning, if you are ready to leave, then take me with you" his voice was calm and composed. She knew that some mermaids were able to read minds but she never thought that a little boy would ask for this.
" what do you know about me " she had a lot to ask the little boy but she decided to start with this one.
" your name is Oceania, you are eighteen so right years older than me, you like grapes, you like being alone, and most importantly you want revenge for your parents, I might be young and not able to understand a lot of things but I've always wanted a sister, that's why I want you to take me with you when you go, I will behave myself," he said trying hard to smile.
She looked at him and knew that there was much more to his words. " Where are your parents?" she asked him and he bend his head.
" Died on the same day as yours...a lonely merman, no one to call my family.....it hurts you know... I was ten by then, two years younger than you ....but I've never forgotten it... ever since I've always looked up to you, you never notice it but I'm always near you, I feel like you are the only one who can understand my pain because we both share it. " he spoke in a broken voice that she pitied him more than she pitied herself. She wanted to change the topic to avoid the sad story.
"what's your name?" she asked him.
"Kai..." he said at least smiling now.
" It's dangerous you know? I also feel scared about leaving...I don't know what kind of danger awaits me there...I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if anything happened to you knowing that it's my fault. I'd rather you stay here, it a much safer, and avoid going to the top.." He shook his head once she was done speaking.
"You don't get it...I said you are my family alright? I'm used to seeing you, always happy that you are around, tell me what will I do if you left me? Even if you did not notice me at least I've always been seeing you....if you leave I'll feel like I've lost someone too....just be my elder sister and take me with you....if you don't then there's no point of living right?" he said in a low but meaningful voice. " I want a family....and I chose you...we both have no one left. Don't you ever feel lonely being alone? Because I do and it hurts so much and now you wanna leave and maybe you won't come back anytime soon...I don't know what to do...I'm helpless .....please just accept me!...maybe I'd be of help to you...I also want to see them suffer for what they did to us...Oceania you don't even know how to survive out there, we can help each other out and it'll be much easier right" you could see tears welling up in his eyes but as usual, the tears of a mermaid are hard to fall. She looked at him and she was now confused.
Maybe he would be of help to her and having someone of your kind in a new place feels safer than just being alone. Let alone that, if he could read minds it meant that he could also help her. There's also one more thing, she's been lonely and she also needs someone to at least talk with. Someone she knew and someone she could trust. Maybe Kai needed the same too, and the little mermen seemed heartless, the only thing she wasn't sure about was how she was going to protect him in the human world.
