"Miss Clara"
Anthony's sweet voice emerged from the door making Adrian's pleasant face turn sullen. His eyes then turned to Clara, who kept flashing her broad smile watching Anthony as if she was waiting for him all this time.
'Was this excitement all for him' he thought and turned his gloomy eyes at Anthony asking.
"What are you doing here Anthony?" his deep yet authoritative voice snapped Anthony's attention from Clara to his boss.
The smile on his face dropped the moment Adrian's gloomy look came into his view and he pursed his lips into a thin line.
Scratching the back of his neck nervously he said "Boss, I bought lunch for you," his words made Adrian frown in confusion.
"I didn't ask you to bring me any take-outs. Send them back" he didn't reason, and just instructed him to take everything right away.
"But boss.." Anthony tried to speak but stopped when Adrian waved his hand asking him to leave.
Feeling helpless he then looked at Clara asking for a helping hand and heard her cutting in saying," He isn't taking the food back. It's me who asked him to bring the food for you boss" Her words snapped Adrian's attention back to the owner of the voice making his crease deepen.
"And this isn't a take-out. It's homemade food made by your favorite cook Leo..." purposely stretched the last word Clara let him know who had made the food.
Last night before going home, she asked Leo if he could send lunch for Adrian at the workplace. The old man was so surprised that he bobbed his head like an excited child agreeing to her request just like that.
For Leo, Adrian was like his son, and just watching him take care of himself was something that made him happy, just like a proud parent.
At the mention of Leo's name, Adrian cleared the frown on his face, but his eyes held an underlining threat when he watched Clara taking the bags from Anthony keeping the same polite smile.
'Why doesn't she smiles at me the way she does with everyone around' fumed by her action, he sneered at his driver who was getting all the attention.
"Thank you so much for your help, Anthony. I hope you didn't mind" she thanked him politely.
"It's my job Miss Clara" Anthony didn't mind working for Adrian. He devoted his life to the man just like Leo. Passing her a polite smile Anthony soon left from there.
One thing she came to notice about the people around Adrian was they had immense respect for him and would go to any extent to keep him happy.
She thought maybe the man was nice to everyone around him except her.
Carrying the bad inside the cabin, Clara halted when her eyes caught Adrian's eyes gawking at her suspiciously.
'Don't tell me he is again assuming something stupid' alarmed by his gaze she quickly stepped in to defend herself.
"Oh.. wait before you assume anything boss, Let me come straight to the point" Clara wasn't ready for another accusation thrown at her. Adrian wasn't someone who would think rationally at the time about his anger.
"Say" came his quick reply.
Content by his calm demeanor, Clara could finally see him ready to listen to her rather than assuming everything on his own.
Letting out a pleasant smile, Clara composed herself and walked towards the small table in front of the couch, placing the food bag on it, and turned.
"You seem to enjoy homemade food, so I asked uncle Leo to make one for you for lunch." she started confidently but as she reached the last word, all her confidence drained out when Adrian didn't even move a muscle on his face.
His eyes never soften even after she finished speaking. It felt like her words didn't reach his expectation and he was still doubting her. 'Isn't he convinced' she thought suddenly feeling fear creep into her heart.
Gulping at the sight of his gloomy face, she waited for him to strike back at her with harsh words but...
"Set the food, let's have lunch together" keeping the same straight face, he looked away from her before he stood up and stepped inside the private room.
Astonished by his reply, Clara quickly bobbed her head and rushed towards the couch following his orders.
Stepping inside the private room Adrian heaved out a deep breath, before placing his hand on his heart feeling it beat like a drum.
"What's wrong with me?" he muttered rubbing the space trying to ease his beating heart but found it hard to calm down.
Why would he get pissed when she accepted that it was her boyfriend with whom she talked. He shouldn't let her words influence him but the thought of her being with someone else ripped his heart.
After his mother's betrayal Adrian never thought, he would gain trust in anyone until Clara came into the picture. At first, he thought, she was just like those spoiled girls from the influential family but after knowing her, his heart for her began to melt.
She became the second woman after his mother who he started to like, giving her the chance to look into his soul. He was like a broken piece of glass barely living his life but with Clara's arrival everything started to change, he started to change.
The smile he had lost for years, soon returned back to him and the reason was non-other than his happy pill, his Clara.
Adrian finally started to put his faith in someone. He thought she wasn't like those women who were greedy for money and status, but she proved him wrong.
He wanted to test her loyalty toward him which was why he never disclosed his real identity to her. He genuinely thought that she was different, he felt it in his heart when her eyes spoke the truth, but then why did she cheat him?
Wasn't he enough or was it all her act?
Adrian didn't know what to think and what not. All this time he believed everything that he found was the truth, but why would his heart feel pain whenever he saw those accusing gazes?
And what did she mean, by she regretted loving him?
He suddenly began to feel restless. He started to doubt himself. Was he missing something? he thought feeling clueless about her actions towards him.
Pulling out his phone, he was about to call Austin when his phone rang and his eyes turned dark at the name flashing on it.
Staring it for some time, he then answered her call." Hello"
"Adrian... it's me Regina" a cheerful voice beamed on the other side of the call and his hold on his phone tightened.
